Part I: Information about your group/ organisation

Please feel free to attach any additional sheets and or information such as brochures,
press reports etc.
1. Name of the group /organisation requesting funds.

Kaorakhali Jana Sevashram.

2. When was the group established?

The group was actually formed in 1971 with education programme. Later, it was
registered under Society Registration Act in 1983.
3. Briefly describe the motivation for starting this group.

In the year 1971 few people of village Kaorakhali joined together for a common
purpose, educate the children. Nearly 3 acres of land was donated by a gentleman
of this village to set-up a school. A small structure was made. The school started
functioning with the help of local well-wishers. Later in the year 1983 it become a
junior high school and it was taken over by government. Until government took
over the school, everything was running with local contribution and by volunteers.
In the year 1981, there was a devastating flood and the school with many houses
in the village collapsed. Then the group again thought of relief work. In 1983, it was
registered as a voluntary organisation and development activities started.
4. Briefly describe the aims of your group.

1
Illiteracy, poverty and poor health condition are three major problems of our
community. Therefore we consider the following three programmes as prime aims
of our organisation:
a) Spread education.
b) Improve Health condition
c) Socio economic Development

5. Does your group any religious or political affiliation? If yes, please describe
the type of affiliation and the reason for it.

Not affiliated with any such body.

6. What non-education related community development activities is your group
involved in?

a) Safe mother and child survival: Provide nutrition supplementation to 300

pregnant and lactating mothers and to 345 children below 5 years
b) Impart health education.
c) Motivate and help people to built and use low cost latrine.
d) Form small groups in the community and motivate them in small savings.
e) Form self-help groups for mutual economic benefit of the people.

Part II : Details about your educational project:

7. List the schools run by your groups and their locations. If you are requesting
funds for only a few of several schools, please specify which ones.

The Organisation runs 1 pre primary school at Purba Gabtola.

1 pre primary school at Kaorakhali North.
1 pre primary school at Jamtola.
1 pre primary school at Kaorakhali South.
(Assistance is requested during first and second year for school no 1 & 2. third
year also to be included school no. 3&4.)

8. Location of schools urban / rural / other.

Rural.
9. Specify the type of education provided ( eg. Basic literacy, Vocational
Training etc.)

Basic literacy through joyful learning method.

10. Please tell us about your teaching techniques (conventional vs. alternative)

The organisation runs 4 nursery school. For each school, there is a simple
structure of 4 walls only, with mud floor, tiles roof leaking during rain, there is no
frame of doors & windows, no partition among classes. All student of each school

sit together under one teacher. We do not have means to improve it in anyway.
Govt schools in other places are more or less of same condition.
We can’t claim, we give a high-grade education under this condition but we at least
motivate parents to send their children to our school at early stage. The time is
fruitfully utilised through joint learning, games and fun. Children are made literate.
There is no pre-primary education facilities in the area other than us.

11. What is the literacy rate in the community ?

The literacy rate in the local community as per Government census only 30%.
12. Describe the socio-economic background of the children and their parents
(e.g education occupational). If any of your students are employed please
tell us about that as well.

The Socio-economic background of the children and their families is very

disheartening.
80% of the families are daily labour. Rest 20% are landless poor marginal
cultivators or artisans. Literacy rate is only 30%. Families are large due to lack of
education and health awareness. Health of the people is poor due to lack of health
awareness poor hygiene practice and inadequate health service. Tuberculosis and
malaria are rampant. Most of the children do not get two full meals. Status of
women is very low. In one word the children and their families are poor in all
respect.
13. In addition to education does your group provide any other services to the
children in your school (e, g food, healthcare, clothing etc.)

Besides education we provide some food to the children, some times cooked,
some times uncooked. We receive bulgur and soya oil, from a local NGO (Church
based) which they get from USA as gift. We can’t provide any other service
because of our limited resources.

14.Does your school have: Yes/No Number

a) Own building Incomplete 6

b) Class room No separate class rooms
c) Toilet No
d) Chairs & Table No
e) Drinking water No
f) Laboratory No
g) Black board Yes
h) Electricity No
i) Toys No
j) Library No
k) Computers No

3
l) Books and slate slate yes, all cannot buy books

We have a simple structure of 4 walls for each school. There is no plaster on walls.
mudfloor, tiles roof leaking during rainy season, no doors and windows frame, no
separate classroom. There is no other facilitiy as mentioned above in any of the
schools. In villages open field is there where children can play.

15. How many children are currently enrolled in your school?

In 4 nursery schools there are 190 male & 155 female students of 3-6 years range.
Out of 345 students, we request support for 200 students studying in two pre-
primary schools at Purba Gabtola and at Kaorakhali North during first two years.

16. How many staff are employed at your school (s)?

Teachers 4 Minimum qualification Matriculate

Other staff 1

It is high time that we employ more teacher and staff for better education.

17. Average distance the children travel to attend your school ?

1 Km.

18. How many children have come through your programme in the past 5 years
and what are they doing currently? Please tell us about their future
education and employment possibilities?

People in the area are very poor and the mass is illiterate. Education is secondary
to them.
We run four pre-primary (nursery) and two primary schools. The following figures
will give a picture of children’s enrolment and dropout rates during 2000 to 2005.
1999-2000 student strength in nursery was 345; 70 promoted to primary.
2000.2001 student strength in nursery was 280.
2001.2002 345 in nursery and 80 in primary.
2002.2003 345 in nursery and 75 in primary.
2003.2004 345 in nursery and 90 in primary
2004.2005 345 in nursery and 185 in primary
From primary to higher classes there is a dropout at the rate of 10%. During past 5
years, 430 students have gone through our schools. Only 10% completed junior
high and 5% completed high school. Most of the dropout students are working as
agricultural labour or domestic aid or in small shops.

4
19. Do you help your students with their future education efforts after they have
passed out of your school?

No, we do not have means to directly help them but we constantly counsel parents
to continue education of their children.
20. Are there any other schools (Kindergarten / Balwari / Elementary school /
High school ) in the area? if so please list the schools and the range of
classes each of them offer.

There is one Government run high school in Keorakhali imparting education from
class V –X.
There are two Government run primary schools – one in Purbagabtala (4 Km
away) and another in Jamtala (5 Km. away). These two schools impart education
from class I – IV. There is also a high school in Jamtala. There is no Kindergarten
other than ours.
21. Is your programme different from that provided at these schools? Please
explain.

These cannot be fully compared because we do not run any high school. There is
no pre-primary school besides ours. Education is better in our school in

comparison to government school standards.

22. Why are the children in your schools not attending government /other
schools in the local area?

We prepare students from nursery and then they go to government run primary
and high schools. There is no nursery school run either by government or any
other group in our area.
23. Do you try to involve the parents of the children in the running of the school
( e.g. in setting the syllabus etc.) ? Please specify.
Our schools are in villages and here almost everybody know each other .So when
a student is absent for some time, the teacher visit the family of the student to
enquire. Teacher’s aim is to inspire the student and parents to continue education.

5
There is a village committee who sit from time to time discuss various issues
including school improvement. Besides this there is no other way of involving the
parents or committee as they also feel hesitant because of their own limitations.
24.What are your expansion plans for the futures (eg. adding more classes or
schools)?
Our immediate plan for next 3 years is to upgrade the present situation. Earlier we
said, our schools are placed covered space with 4 walls, these are not even
complete buildings. There is no bench and desk for students to sit. They sit on
country mat or a piece of cloth they carry with them. There is no proper roofing or
covered doors or windows. No partition among classes. There is no toilet or water
supply arrangement. There is only one teacher for each school. The meagre sum
that we collect Rs. 5.00 per child per month is not adequate to pay the teachers
salary. The money collected is utilised to bring food for children
First, we want to improve these situations. The budget will reflect our plans. In
future, if we get assistance from ASHA, we will go on covering more and more
villages under Kultali block with pre-primary and adult education centre. In the
whole area there is no pre-primary centre either by Government or by any other
organisation. If we can do so, we will be able to grow school-going habit and
interest in education among parents and children at the early age.
Since our financial capacity is very limited and the students cannot pay for
education it will not be practical to promise big plans at this stage.
25.Do you have any suggestions on how ASHA can be a positive influence in
changing the education scenario in India?
It has been stated that the literacy rate in the area is 30%. Earlier generations
never thought of going to school at an early stage. Only some families used to
send their children to school at the age of 7 to 8. Now with our effort, many children
are joining pre-primary school at the age of 4 or 5. Since our resources are very
limited we will not be able to expand our services in greater area.
We need help from ASHA to improve, continue, and expand our education plan.
More and more children will join our school and will become both literally and
functionally, literate. Education of these children will directly increase India’s
literacy rate. These children, when they become parents, will send their children to
school on their own.
ASHA will have a positive influence increasing literacy rate and building more
human resource for India as literacy enables the masses to play an active role in
social and cultural change. Literacy is an integral part of an individual personality.
Illiteracy is a serious impediment to an individual growth and socio-economic
progress of the country. ASHA will not only increase literacy rate but will indirectly
benefit the mass and India.
26. If possible, please provide us with the contact information of two individuals
from your community who can describe the impact of your programme.
