Cole Manufacturing Saves Valuable Time in Fast-Paced Job Shop

With a tradition of technological advance, Cole Manufacturing (colemfg.com) has stayed at the forefront of changes in the tool and die industry. Their pursuit of the highest quality in tooling and metal stamping has lead to shorter lead-times and more accurate tooling for their customers. By diversifying with newer technologies, they serve the largest customer the same as they serve the smallest. Cole is based in West Bend, Wisconsin and specializes in metal stampings, fabrications, weldments, and assemblies. They meet the tooling needs of their customers with the goal of minimum material use in mind. This thought process begins in part design, continues through prototyping, and on into actual production. Cole focuses on precision, quality, and a quick turnaround. On a daily basis, Cole measures or inspects their various parts. These often range from fabricated weldments, stampings, tooling fixtures, stamping die components, and CNC/ stamped tubes. These parts were measured by an assortment of hand gages, height gages, large verniers, and even tape measures. This hand-inspection method presented several problems. Traditional tools couldnt cover the entire measurement range Cole needed, and they simply werent accurate enough. These tools also didnt have the capability to interface with CAD, which limited Coles reverse engineering options. Experienced with FARO, Cole knew the Platinum FaroArm equipped with CAM2 Measure X software would provide them the flexibility and portability they needed. The FaroArm is adaptable to a wide variation of inspections and its portability makes it an invaluable part of their everyday operations. Quickly accepted by their engineers and operators, the FaroArm was clearly a more efficient way to perform needed tasks. Additional benefits of the FARO solution were its ability to create one-off inspections for set-up and the output of inspection documentation. The FaroArm provided faster inspections, the capability to measure more complex geometry, and aided in comparing customer CAD data to finish prototype parts. For Cole Manufacturing, the return value of their FaroArm solution was more than simple time and money savings, or even reduced scrap. The greatest value came in the flexibility and adaptability of the device for their fast-paced job shop. After FAROs great support group helped us with initial set-up, we had a seamless integration, said Quality Assurance Manager John Berst. Tube inspection jobs that used to take four hours can now be completed in 45 minutes or less. In the two and half months since acquiring our FaroArm, weve saved 100 hours of work time.

Suzuki Saves Manufacturing Time with the FaroArm

Suzuki Manufacturing of America Corp. (SMAC) opened in Rome, Georgia, in May 2002 as Suzukis only U.S.-based manufacturing facility and began producing the industrys first 4-wheeled All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs). Today, SMAC employees build frames, mold plastic, and assemble ATVs at a rate of more than 200 units per eight-hour shift. Last year alone, almost 60,000 ATVs came off the line and in March 2008, the Rome facility celebrated production of its 250,000th ATV. SMAC measures and inspects various parts including ATV frames, suspension and engine parts, rims, and grip carriers. These different parts range greatly in size and complexity. Suzuki used a stationary CMM but, although accurate, it often proved to be too slow for their manufacturing schedules and timeframes. They also used traditional hand tools such as calipers, height gauges, and micrometers but these presented their own problems of accuracy, repeatability, and automatic report generation. SMAC needed something that provided accuracy similar to a stationary CMM, but with the convenience and speed of hand tools. The Platinum FaroArm satisfied both requirements. The accuracy and speed of the FaroArm were key factors in the decision to turn to a FARO solution. The implementation process was straightforward and they benefit from using the advanced, yet easy-to use device every day.

I love the technology, said QC Tech David Bopp. Its enjoyable to use and fast. As far as speed goes, comparing the FaroArm to our old CMM is like comparing a motorcycle to a bike. The FaroArm has improved SMACs consistency and overall quality levels. They continue to find new applications every day, but the greatest value gained remains to be timesavings as the FaroArm helps SMAC meet their deadlines more quickly and efficiently. I can measure our parts faster than I can with the CMM and I dont have to break my back doing it, said Bopp. One of the most fun things about the FaroArm is measuring a part Ive never measured before, because I enjoy learning how to set up coordinate systems on new parts. During the past quarter century, Suzuki has done more than just give birth to a new industry; it continuously sets new standards as to what consumers should demand in quality and performance. Suzuki is committed to being the leader in both the motorcycle and ATV industries and our products reflect that, said Mel Harris, Vice President of American Suzukis Motorcycle/ATV division. We are dedicated to challenging ourselves to develop new and exciting technology that will continue to move the product line forward.

Leiss Tool & Die Inspects Large Machine Parts and Fabrications 4 Times Faster with the FaroArm
Leiss Tool & Die in Somerset, Pennsylvania, machines parts with a wide variety of sizes, tolerances, and geometries. They fabricate and stamp parts ranging from 6 cubed components to 10 castings for power generation. The complexity of jobs created extreme measurement challenges for Leiss fixed CMM and normal hand tools. Many of the large parts they fabricated were too large or intricate for a fixed CMM. Micrometers, custom gages, and on-machine digital readouts were also either too expensive, too difficult to use, or provided lessthan-desirable accuracy. Leiss needed a tool capable of performing on-machine and in-process inspections quickly, accurately and consistently. Furthermore, they required a solution that documented measurements electronically and generated custom inspection reports. Leiss chose the Platinum FaroArm for its speed, flexibility and price. When compared to the option of adding another large fixed-bed CMM, choosing the FaroArm portable CMM at a fraction of the cost was an easy decision. Built with an extended-life battery, up to seven axis joints each with an infinite range of rotation and weighing about 20 pounds, the FaroArm is the Quality Inspectors tool of choice when he receives a call from the production floor to check parts on their machines. The FaroArm operator simply collects measurement points using the Arms hard probe. The data is instantly translated into a CAD model with FAROs CAM2 software or one of dozens of compatible software packages via the systems laptop. The FaroArms tight accuracy allows Leiss to measure complex constructed features of large, machined bores by analyzing data collected at theoretical intersection points and bore angles. Saving time translates into dollars, and Leiss reduced their production time by half or better on all of their parts. Large parts that once took hours to inspect now take only 15 minutes to check. We can get things done in five minutes that would take four times as long on the CMM, observed Leiss Quality Inspector Hacke Mazanowski. Leiss also gained huge accuracy and reporting improvements over their traditional hand tools. Better accuracy and the ability to prove it improved customer confidence, and has opened up a secondary line of business for Leiss. Many of Leiss contacts, suppliers and customers contract the company to measure their own large or complex parts.

Andretti Green Racing Gains Freedom and Function with the FARO Laser ScanArm
Andretti Green Racing has more wins than any team in IndyCar Series history. Founded in 2003, AGR (andrettigreenracing.com) has won the Indianapolis 500 twice and they have three IndyCar Series championships through 2007. They also have an unprecedented 34 overall wins in the Series a record they add to with every trip to victory lane. In their continuing goal of excellence, AGR reverse engineers full-size race car parts to improve the accuracy of the teams wind tunnel models. They use this information as a starting point for design modifications. AGR hired an outside service company to scan surfaces for them, but it was difficult to use the data provided. The biggest problem was the time it took to have data delivered. AGR needed the information faster and they needed greater flexibility and freedom. Once competing measuring devices were demonstrated to them, AGR quickly realized the advantages of the FaroArm. The FARO demonstration opened their eyes to lot of additional projects and uses. They realized that if they had a flexible enough tool, that it wouldnt be used just for special projects, but as an everyday tool. AGR acquired the 8-foot FARO Laser ScanArm, which gives them the portable CMM and the surface scanner they needed. They admit the FARO solution was more expensive, but they also acknowledge it has the better value. The ScanArm has the accuracy and portability they were looking for and the quick setup and easeof-use that was important. The fact that FARO stands behind their products with support and customer service adds to the value. The engineering and design staff are very excited at the possibilities FARO brings. The job list for the ScanArm grows every day. Verifying the position of aerodynamic parts on race cars was a difficult task before and is one of the biggest advantages gained with FARO. AGR takes highly accurate measurements of points on non-planer surfaces to improve the repeatable location of aerodynamic features. This enables them to increase the detail of wind tunnel modeling, and once they find improvements in the wind tunnel, they use the ScanArm to verify parts are scaled up and installed on the car properly. Having the ScanArm in-house saves AGR the money they paid service providers for similar scans. It also saves them the time it took getting a second company involved in their development projects and helps keep their proprietary parts a secret longer. The ScanArm saves AGR about 2-3 days on average per project that needs surface scans. Since its easier to do these scans in-house, they do more of them than before. The increased data is extremely valuable to AGR and their continued success. For Andretti Green Racing, its about winning and the FARO ScanArm is part of that continued tradition. Ultimately, if we can increase the consistency of our racecars, we can learn faster, Technical Director Tino Belli said. The faster we learn, the better our chance to gain performance advantages and win even more races.

STYL&TECH Gains Speed & Precision in Design with the FARO Laser ScanArm
Based in Quebec City, the oldest French city in North America, STYL&TECH (stylntech.com) has an intuitive understanding of both European and American trends. They are an inventive product development consulting firm that delivers clean and reliable product design solutions to their customers while meeting their on-time needs. They specialize in collaborative product development using 3-D software to simulate real-life issues. Part of STYL&TECHs portfolio is their design work for RVs, like those built by Triple-E of Manitoba. To be able to accurately fit new designs over an existing product, STYL&TECH needed a way to bring the real life product data into CAD. They tried other measurement methods before, but what they needed was a way to grab a complete 3-D picture of the product dimensions. This way, they would be able to validate that the fit between the newly designed parts and the current product did not create any engineering issues. In the past, STYL&TECH was forced to use 2-D CAD information (production drawings) and tape measurements. They tried a laser scanner from one company, but the measurement results were far from accurate and could not be trusted. They also looked into photogrammetry software, but were concerned that it could not capture mechanical parts with sufficient detail. The FARO Laser ScanArm with PolyWorks software proved to be the only solution for STYL&TECH. Its simplicity of set-up and use, its data acquisition speed, and its accuracy are critical for their needs. The flexibility of the ScanArm means it can capture both complex mechanical designs and automotive class A surfaces with ease. STYL&TECH is a fast paced product development solution provider. The FARO ScanArm helped them provide even faster results, while improving the precision of new designs. In the case of the newest Triple-E RV, it took less than two months to provide Triple-E with the tooling of the styling design. These results were impossible without using their ScanArm. The added capability has also empowered STYL&TECH to bid on and win new business projects. They recently completed an assignment for Bell Helicopter Canada where they had to reverse engineer 209 tools in less than four and half months a task believed impossible for a 10-person company. The technological advantages gained with FARO helped them beat seven North American competitors for the job. Overall, the cost of the FARO solution was higher than that of the competitors, but this was more than compensated by its speed and ease of use. The ScanArm is such a powerful tool for STYL&TECH that it paid for itself within six months. The ScanArm fits our business philosophy of getting the job done very well and very fast, says President and General Manager Roch Champagne. I cannot imagine meeting both the Triple-E and Bell projects without the ScanArm.
