MBG 205 TUTORIAL 5 ~ MOMENT OF INERTIA
(1) Determine the moment of inertia of a rectangle b x h about (a) the base b which is
the x-axis (b) the centroidal axis parallel to the x-axis. Ans: (a) bh’/3 (b) bh’/12.
(2) Determine the moment of inertia of a triangle with respect to its base. Ans: bh?/12.
(3) Determine the centroidal polar moment of inertia of a circular area by direct
integration. Using this result, determine the moments of inertia of a circular area with
respect to a diameter. Ans: Jp = ar'/2, [y= mr'/4.
(4) Determine by direct integration the moment of inertia of the shaded area of Figure
Q4 with respect to the y-axis. (VM9.1). Ans: ly = a°b/6.
(5) Determine the moment of inertia of the shaded area of Figure Q5 with respect to
each of the coordinate axes. Hence, determine the radius of gyration of the area with
respect to each of the axes. (VME9.3). Ans: I, = ab'/21, ly = a°b/5, ky = bV(1/7), ky =
av).
(6) State and prove the theorem of parallel axis for the moment of inertia of an area,
(1) Determine the moment of inertia of the shaded area of Figure Q7 with respect to
the x-axis. Ans: 45.9 x 10° mm‘,
(8) Determine by direct integration the product of inertia of the shaded area of Figure
Q8 with respect to x and y axes. (VM9.67). Ans: a'/2.
(9) For a given area, ly = 48 x 10° mm, Ixy = -20 x 10° mm! where x, y-axes are
centroidal axes. If the axis corresponding to the maximum moment of inertia is
obtained by rotating the x-axis 67.5° counterclockwise about the centroid C. Use
Mohr’s circle to determine (a) I, of the area (b) the principal moments of inertia.
(VM9.107). Ans: (a) 88 x 10° mm! (b) 96.28 x 10° mm’, 39.7 x 10° mm’,
(10) Determine by direct integration the product of inertia of the shaded area of Figure
Q10 with respect to x and y axes. (VM9.68). Ans: a°b’/12. +
