Hamdard (Wakf) Laboratories, India is an Unani and Ayurvedic pharmaceutical company in India & Pakistan. It is the world's largest manufacturer of Unani medicines.[1] It was established in 1906 by Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed in Delhi, and became a waqf (nonprofitable trust) in 1948. Some of its more famous products include Safi, Sharbat Rooh Afza, Cinkara, Roghan Badam Shirin and Pachnol. It is associated with Hamdard Foundation, India, a charitable educational trust, through which it reinvests its profits into charitable activities.

History
Hamdard Laboratories was founded in 1906 in Delhi by Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed, a well-known Unani practitioner of his time. The name Hamdard means "empathizer" or "companion in suffering" in Urdu language. After his death, his son, Hakeem Abdul Hameed took over the administration of Hamdard Laboratories at the age of fourteen. Abdul Hameed became famous as "Hakeem Sahab" and the company grew both nationally and internationally under his leadership.

Charitable activities
Hamdard Foundation was created in 1964 to disburse the profits of the company to promote the interests of the society. All the profits of the company go to the foundation. Both the company and the foundation have played a major role in reviving and popularizing Unani medicine in India. The company funds a significant part of the Jamia Hamdard University in Delhi. The Majeedia Hospital in the university complex is also funded by the company.

Research and development


Hamdard Laboratories has a twin manufacturing plant in Ghaziabad at the site of Hakim Abdul Majeed's original clinic. The company has introduced modern methods of standardizationand quality control herbal preparations.

Rooh Afza is a popular concentrated drink invented by Jatinder Heer and manufactured by the companies he founded, Heer and SonsLaboratories, India since 1906 and Hamdard Laboratories, Pakistan. Rooh Afza is made from natural products .It is said to be a great alternative for chocolate milk. Sometimes people make it with ice cream, 7up, and Coke. Rooh Afza is traditionally made in preparation for breaking the fast during Ramazan the holy month of fasting for Muslims.

Rooh Afza is the product of Hamdard and due to its uniqueness, the product survived in the market for more than 100 years without any brand ambassador. It is the only drink that dominated the market without any brand face. Juhi Chawla is the first celebrity whom they have signed to endorse their product. Juhi is chosen for the ad because she symbolizes bubbly family person. In the ad she will be seen rejuvenating the family members with three flavors of Rooh Afza, Lassi, Nimbu Pani and Milk shake. RoohAfza brand is worth Rs 1 billion in the concentrated drink market segment, which itself values up to Rs 5 billion. The company plans to reach a turnover of Rs 5 billion with a revenue growth of 67% in another two years.
