Movember: its fast approaching that time of year when men are men and women are nervous...the donning of the moustache to raise money for mens prostate cancer and depression. The Royal Hotel will be holding their annual Movember local fundraiser and judging of the best mo for Canowindra, and best team mo, so get a group of friends, sports group or business team together and fur up. Quiz: the Trivia Night fundraiser for the Canowindra Showgirl Zone Finals will be held 28 October 7pm @ Canowindra Bowling Club $15pp on tables of 8, finger food provided. RSVP by 26/10 from Bill Pauls Carpet Centre. Security: Canowindra Public School have made changes to security at the school which should mean that break-ins will be a thing of the past. Although most of the items taken during the last incident are useless outside the school setting, the damage and time taken to get replacement items is a real nuisance. Pool: the amenities block has now been gutted so work will commence shortly on the refurbishment. Portable amenities blocks are in use until all work is finished.

Costa Georgiadis, passionate garden advocate, mad composter and host of SBSs popular Costas Garden Odyssey, will officially open the Canowindra Community Garden this Thursday 27 October. The Canowindra Community Garden, centrally located in a vacant block next to the Uniting Church, began to take shape just two weeks ago when an army of volunteers turned up to set up boundary fences, chop back weeds, lay out garden beds and mulch to be ready for planting this Thursday. The site was chosen in part due to the proximity to the primary schools. We hope that this will become a really great educational resource for the schools and the wider community, says Garden co-ordinator Chris Cuddy. Much of the produce from the garden will be provided to low income families through the Canowindra Food Basket. There is a Community Garden working group, which has representatives from the CWA, Landcare, the Uniting church, the Garden Club, teachers and parents from all the schools, and other community members. The Community Garden, approximately 600sqm, has been designed around a simple spiral path to entice people in to the garden and to created ample planting space. The garden will be planted predominately with edibles vegetables, fruits and herbs and include raised beds, composting, worm farms and communal spaces. Every student in Canowindra, from pre-school to high school, will plant a seedling in the garden on Opening Day. A scarecrow competition, which has already had a large number of creative entries, will also be judged on the day. 10.00am Canowindra Preschool Canowindra Public School Infants St Edwards Infants Intro to veggie gardening & class plantings Infants scarecrow competition judging & Morning tea. 11.00am Canowindra Public School Primary St Edwards Primary Intro to veggie gardening & class planting Primary scarecrow competition judging 12.00pm Official Launch with Costa Georgiadis and Lunch 2.00pm High School students Compost workshop & planting For more information please contact Chris Cuddy on 63442501 or Julia Andrews at juliabluff@bigpond.com

It was a busy morning, about 8:30, when an elderly gentleman in his 80's arrived to have stitches removed from his thumb. He said he was in a hurry as he had an appointment at 9:00 am. I took his vital signs and had him take a seat, knowing it would be over an hour before the other Doctor would to able to see him. I saw him looking at his watch and decided, since I was not busy with another patient, I would evaluate his wound. On exam, it was well healed, so I talked to one of the nurses, got the needed supplies to remove his sutures and redress his wound. While taking care of his wound, I asked him if he had another doctor's appointment this morning, as he was in such a hurry. The gentleman told me no, that he needed to go to the nursing home to eat breakfast with his wife. I inquired as to her health, He told me that she had been there for a while and that she was a victim of Alzheimer's disease. As we talked, I asked if she would be upset if he was a bit late. He replied that she no longer knew who he was, that she had not recognized him in five years now. I was surprised, and asked him, and you still go every morning, even though she doesn't know who you are? He smiled as he patted my hand and said, "She doesn't know me, but I still know who she is." I had to hold back tears as he left, I had goose bumps on my arm, and thought, That is the kind of love we want in life. True love is neither physical, nor romantic. True love is an acceptance of all that is, has been, will be, and will not be. And Forty years on Dr Kumar still approaches and treats his patients with the same compassion and understanding that every individual is entitled to. Every patient, colleague and medical rep that crosses the threshold is welcomed, accepted and treated with the very respect Doctor Kumar has earned by all over the past forty years. We wish him well for many years to come and hope you will come to join in the celebration of the past, and the forthcoming future endeavours of Canowindra Medical Surgery.

THIS SUNDAY It has been a HECTIC month of music for folk@canowindra! First the AMAZING Womindra Festival 7-9 October, what a rich and wonderful range of quality music. If you missed out on it... you really missed out! Then a lovely mellow mix of performers Saturday night at the Canowindra Twilight markets in Memorial Park. A feast of food, wine, friendship and great music! On Sunday 30 October, folk will be gathering for their monthly session at taste Canowindra, Ferguson Street from 4-6pm. There are a number of new musicians and listeners who will be performing, so come early to get a seat! The feature act will be Mark Corkery from Young, who unfortunately was unable to join us for our September gathering. Mark has been around on both the solo music scene and as parts of various ensembles since the late 90s; regularly sliding between genres such as folk, blues, funk, rock, post-rock, electronic and more recently folktronica' (borrowing elements from folk and electronic music). The common thread in amongst all of this genre hopping has been the raw uniqueness of Mark's vocal style and his use of emotive melodies set to whatever stylistic backdrop he encounters. On this occasion, it will be just Mark and his guitar; which will be the perfect way to experience Mark's incredible voice and style. This is a family friendly event, with plenty of room for kids to run around outside. Entry is free, with a donation box for th e featur e p er for mer 's expenses. Any enquiries, contact Nerida Cuddy 0429 048 603.

ENCOURAGING CREATIVITY... ...that is their philosophy and thats what they do, and do it well! On 1 November River Bank Gallery will celebrate 6 years of operating. This is an amazing feat, especially for a gallery, but also a small business in a small town. Throughout the years the River Bank Gallery has grown in both space and reputation. Their monthly exhibitions bring people into town from all over the state which helps the town culturally and economically. The River Bank Gallery has truly become part of the wider community, having held fundraising exhibitions for the Canowindra Preschool Kindergarten, and discussions are currently being held for a fundraising exhibition for the Fitness Path. Congratulations David and Catherine for not only surviving this long, but flourishing in an industry that is generally short lived. Your contributions to the art scene and our community are invaluable and truly appreciated. Currently on display are works by Lucy Buttenshaw and Christine Latham, two amazingly creative and talented women, and the exhibition will run until mid November. Canowindra has been renowned for balloons, wine, music, and the Age of Fishes Museum, it has now also become a destination for art lovers. Get into the gallery and absorb the art.

CARAVAN P ARK P ETITION Its obvious that Neil & Ros Haywood have worked wonders with our Caravan Park since they took over management earlier this year. Now the Haywoods want to take it to the next stage and install a subsidised effluent dump point, so that Canowindra can get a step closer to becoming an accredited RV Friendly Town. Council has been approached with the idea however have claimed that there are no funds available for it. This is a shame as there are dump points at Blayney, Cowra, Forbes, and Orange, and if the petition is successful and a dump point is approved, it would be the first dump point in the Cabonne Shire. Dump points are proven to encourage destination travellers and those who stay for longer visits. The 'RV Friendly Town' scheme is an initiative of the Campervan & Motorhome Club of Australia that promotes RV tourism related services across Australia. An RV Friendly Town is one that provides amenities and services for the mobile traveller, which encourages expansion of tourism related infrastructure and services and promote the economic advantage to small towns of providing RV tourist specific amenities. The CMCA have partnered with KEA Campers to offer a Dump Point Subsidy Scheme, created to develop self-contained tourism infrastructure by expanding the Dump Point network throughout Australia. By providing this subsidy to selected Councils, CMCA and KEA Campers hope to encourage more selfcontained tourism throughout Australia for its benefits to regional centres and the environment. If you see the petition around town, please sign it if you realise the benefit to our town financially and socially in obtaining a subsidised dump point. EVENING COMMITTEE MEETINGS Cabonne Council has halved the period it originally intended to conduct a trial of evening committee meetings. Committee meetings currently start at 9.30am on the first Monday of each month, but the Council last month decided to hold them from 5pm to 7pm for a six-month period and to review the situation at the end of that time. However at its October meeting, the Council rescinded the previous months motion and will trial the evening meetings for a period of three months. The meetings will start at 5pm, but there will no longer be a deadline for them to be finished. The new starting time will be implemented after the changes are advertised.

CAPTAIN LYCRA Its that time of year again when the lycra is dusted off, the legs are shaved and feeling the burn of plenty of bike riding practice. Captain Lycra is again taking part in the 2011 Gong Ride Sunday 6 November in order to raise funds for people affected by Multiple Sclerosis (MS). MS is the most common disease of the central nervous system and affects more than 20,000 Australians. MS Australia provides programs and choices to people with MS including a range of residential facilities, social support programs, accommodation support services, attendant care in private homes, involvement with regional centres and country link programs. The ride of 90kms is capped at 10,000 participants and is the biggest fundraising event for MS Australia each year. Last year almost $4.1 million was directly fundraised by riders on the Gong Ride. Help Captain Lycra reach his target this year of $1,000 and help those people who are living with MS by supporting a great cause. To donate go to www.gongride.org.au and search for Captain Lycras alter ego Andrew Holmes, as part of the Figures and Fur team. Alternatively payments can be made directly to Andrew and he will issue you a receipt. Donations over $2 are tax deductable.

WHO WANTS A H OME? Habitat for Humanity NSW Executive Director, James Allardice has been surprised that only one family has shown interest in partnering with HFH to build their own new home in Canowindra. The three house build is going ahead with a forecast completion date June 2012. The houses being built are three bedroom with one bathroom and would suit a single parent with 2-3 children or a mature aged couple who would like to own their own home. All HFH houses are simple, decent but most importantly, affordable. For more information please contact James Allardice on 02 9662 8036 or jamesallardice@habitat.org.au
