EMC 3130 Fall 2011 Shooting Exercises

Shooting exercises will be conducted on Tuesday and Thursday, November 1 and 3 during normal lab time. You will have from 1:00 until 2:25 PM to complete the exercise and upload it to the drop box. Teams will accomplish the exercises. Team members should strive to contribute equally. Lighting and composition should be considered at all times. Creativity and initiative will be rewarded. The extent to which the final result may serve as a tutorial on the effect will also be rewarded. All exercises should be executed as professionally as equipment allows. Team members may act as on-camera talent. Each team should have at least one member with or with access to a good camera. Some equipment may be available on a first-come, first-served basis. We have two small Sony cameras, two light kits, and two or three tripods. No editing should be required. You may deliver your raw video. Please be sure it is labeled clearly. For example, THURS_Team1_TSE or TUES_Team3_TSE Each team must choose one exercise. Selection should be based on interest, enthusiasm, and the functionality of available equipment. 1. Follow Focus Place your camera on full telephoto. Position your talent facing camera in a full shot (They will be very far away.) Have them walk toward the camera until they enter a close-up, keeping them in sharp focus the entire time. Repeat so that each team member operates the focus once. Example - http://youtu.be/AWt3-X5z-pU Tip: Bring some white or masking tape. Place marks along the path of the talent, and corresponding marks on the lens focusing ring to help follow the focus. 2. Dolly Zoom Find a device to use as a make-shift dolly. Create an amusing scenario and execute a dolly zoom, first a dolly in zoom out, then a dolly out zoom in. Maintain focus. Repeat once so that each team member is able to either push the dolly, operate the zoom, or maintain focus. Tutorial - http://youtu.be/FPBYOIetRdw Tip: Bring some white or masking tape. It can be used to mark specific points on the lens focusing ring and zoom ring to help follow the focus. Make sure the background helps add to the effect. 3. Lighting Exercise Film Noir 5 x 5 (Five shots, five seconds each). Light and shoot five shots that exemplify film noir lighting. Each team member should direct the lighting and composition of one shot, with the fifth a completely collaborative endeavor.
