around 4000 consultants That's a scary thought for some investors who believe the economy's health is in jeopardy due to
around the world. widespread credit problems. Last week's government data gave investors a very fuzzy picture of the
economy: October job growth was much stronger than expected, but September personal spending
and October manufacturing growth slowed.
The parts of the economy in question, as they have been for the greater part of the year, are the
housing and financial sectors. U.S. earnings, overall, are poised to post their first decline in five
years, thanks to poor results at companies who made bad bets when lending and investing.
Meanwhile, industries like technology have stayed robust.
"It's been an interesting tale of two markets," said Linda Duessel, market strategist at Federated
Investors in Pittsburgh. "The economy still looks good except for these two areas, which are deep,
deep, deep in the woods."
So far, there's not enough evidence to say the economy isn't surviving the recent crisis facing banks
and other lenders. "The market just hates the news they don't know yet," Duessel said.
There are still a few more quarterly earnings reports yet to come in. Companies with earnings
releases scheduled for this week include automakers General Motors Corp. (Charts, Fortune
500) and Ford Motor Co. (Charts, Fortune 500); technology companies Cisco Systems
Inc. (Charts, Fortune 500), Sun Microsystems Inc. (Charts, Fortune 500) and
Qualcomm Inc. (Charts, Fortune 500); and insurers American International Group
(Charts, Fortune 500) and Marsh & McLennan Cos. (Charts, Fortune 500)
And though the economic data schedule is thin this week, there are a few reports that investors will
be monitoring. The Institute for Supply Management releases its October index on Monday, and
economists are anticipating, on average, slightly weaker growth than in September. Meanwhile, the
University of Michigan is expected to show a dip in consumer sentiment in November compared with
October.
But even if these reports turn out to be upbeat, they're not likely to give the market much of a boost to
the upside. The Fed seems satisfied with how the economy is doing, so a good set of numbers won't
change its sentiment. Wall Street is likely to get more direction from inflation figures - the Labor
Department's producer and consumer price indexes - which aren't scheduled to be released until
next week.
And any unexpected good news about the economy is also unlikely to have an impact. So Wall
Street will have to wait a while before it can emerge from this latest morass.

Girding For Growth: Nearly Half of Executive Search Firms Plan To Hire

2
The pace of executive-level hiring has nearly half of executive search firms planning to add
additional professional staff now through year-end.

That's according to the findings of ExecuNet's benchmark Search Firm Hiring Index, a barometer of
executive recruiting activity pegged to the investments that search consultants are making in their
own staffs.

The ExecuNet survey found that 78 percent of responding executive recruiters expect at least a 10
percent increase in the number of executive recruitment assignments received from corporate
clients as they wind down this calendar year.

To help manage that anticipated growth, 46 percent of them plan to add consulting and/or research
staff.

Understanding Marketing Yourself: Part 2 – Examine Your Product …
Once you have a reasonable understanding if the marketplace as it pertains to your
specific segment, you should now be ready to measure how you, meaning your skills and
qualifications, stack up. In other words are you selling what the market wants to buy? Ask
yourself objectively based on your newly verified understanding of the marketplace, “if I
were the buyer (employer), would I buy this product (does this person have what this
company needs)?” If the answer is “no”, then two questions come to mind: 1) Are you
targeting the right companies? And 2) if so, what is keeping them from seeing it? The
action or lack of indicated by the first question is obvious but the second question demands
that we take a serious look at both the content and quality of the message. Next time:
