JMC Job Search Tips (Simple Things pt 74…)

Networking Goodwill: Your most powerful ally…
The employment picture continues to look somewhat murky as the news fluctuates from encouraging
rallies to disappointing layoffs. So these are the times that when handled properly can bring out the
very best in us. It requires the things that have always made this a great country of individuals.
Americans have been long known for ingenuity, a can-do attitude, and perseverance to achieve the
desired results. And in the present day, it appears that all of these will be called upon to resolve
employment challenges. With that as a backdrop, networking becomes an even more vital tool in the
quest to stay abreast of the job market by industry, by company, and by function. To that end, it’s
especially critical to create and engender networking goodwill. As the subtitle of this column implies,
it’s the simple things that often get overlooked and this is never truer than when it comes to this topic.
Networking goodwill is just what the name implies; the will to do good that in this case comes about
via networking. Go out of your way to do something nice for your networking associates. A good
book, a couple of movie/game/show tickets, or coffee/lunch/dinner can go a long way to creating the
right feeling about helping. You want your networking partners to leave your presence, either in-
person or by phone, with a good feeling. That’s when they’re much more likely to both remember
and try to help. It’s human nature to want to do good for those who make us feel good. Too many
times, it seems those looking for networking help are so narrowly focused on getting what they need
that they give little thought to the needs of the Contact. Remember nice gestures not only make
people smile, they get rewarded. So find out about the interests of your sought-after networking
Contact so that you can make the most of your encounter…
