Planning a mug (headshot) photograph that goes beyond the jailhouse look
Amugorheadshotisthemostcommonimagestyleusedtoillustratenewsreportsineitherprint, onlineorbroadcast.Thoughtelevisionstrivestousemovingimages,amugmaybeusedinapinch.
Thecompositionofanyphotographcanfaceeitherleft,right,center,upordown.Heathersphotofaces alittletotheleft,butitcouldappearanywhereonalayoutineitherprint,onlineorbroadcast.Myphotofaces totherightbecausethatswhereDr.MarkWaltersislookingwithhiseyes.Becauseofthis,Ihaveplacedhis imagetothefarleftsoheislookingintoratherthanoutofthelayout.ThesubjectofAprilsphotofacescenter withbothherbodyandeyes,whichisneutral.Thismeansherphotocanbelocatedanywhereforapleasing result.ThephotoofGeorgeClooney,below,isfacingalittletotherightandlike Heathersitcouldbeusedanywhereinthelayout.Why?Lookwherehiseyes arelooking.Intheprofessionalworld,itsbesttoshootamugwithacompositionthatisneutral,unlessyouknowinadvancewhatthedesignerhasinmind. WhenIwasshootingMarksmug,IwasalsothedesignerandIknewexactly wheretheimagewasgoingtobeusedsoitwasOKforhimtofaceright.
