Todos Come and Celebrate the Heroes of our Faith! Forget about ghosts, ghouls, witches and vampires!!! As Catholic Christians we must fight against the negative (and evil) influences of the world by recovering the Christian meaning of this very special tradition that, like Christmas and Easter, have been turned into a worldly and commercial enterprise. Some say its fun, but why waste a great opportunity to evangelize children, youth and their families? Join us on Monday for Mass and Vespers at 5:30 pm in the new church. A procession to the church hall will follow immediately after Mass. All children and their families are invited to our party at St. Marys Church Hall on Bethel & North Avenues, dressed as their favorite Saint or Bible Hero. Other costumes may be of the animals in Noahs Ark, angels, and other holy men and women recognized as models of faith. There will be refreshments, carnival games and prizes. (continued on p. 2)

Please bring a canned food in exchange for carnival game tickets. WANTED: Candies (no scary wrappers, please), Small Toys for prizes, snacks and beverages. Please drop them off in the church on Sunday or Monday, or in the hall on Monday after 6:00 pm. 31st SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME October 30, 2011 GOD IS IN CHARGE "Who do you think you are?!" today's readings demand. We are brought up short, put in our place, given a dose of reality. Who is God? Who is in charge? Who is the greatest? We begin with a passage from the prophet Malachi, one of the latest prophets, who wrote after the Jews returned from Babylon. Calling the people to task in God's name, he condemns the divisions and false teachings that have arisen, reminding them that all were created by the one God. Paul tells the Thessalonians the same thing, but in a positive way-praising them for remembering that it is God who is at work within them. Finally, the Gospel presents Jesus speaking out against hypocrisy and vainglory. "You have but one teacher . . . you have but one Father" (Matthew 23:8, 9). We are firmly put in our place. God is in charge. "No tienen ms Page 2

que un Maestro. .

"Master, I am ready. Use me as you will." "Bamboo," said the Master gravely, "I must cut you down." Bamboo trembled and bent his head. "Do your will and cut." "Beloved Bamboo, I must take your leaves and branches, too." "Master, spare me!" "Bamboo, I must cut you in two and take out your heart." Bamboo bowed low. "Master . . . do your will." The Master of the Garden cut and, lifting Bamboo gently, carried him to a spring among his dry fields. He carefully laid one end of Bamboo in the spring and the other into a water channel. The sparkling waters raced down Bamboo's torn body into the fields. Rice was planted, shoots grew, and harvest came. In his growth, Bamboo was life abundant, but in his brokenness, he channeled abundant life into his Master's world. serio, "tengo que cortarte". El Bamb baj su cabeza temblando. "Haz tu voluntad y corta". Session #6
Sunday, October 30 9:00 am-10:30 am (Bilingual) 11:30 am-1:00 pm (Bilingual) 2:00 pm-3:30 pm (Spanish) 3:30 pm-5:00 pm (Bilingual) During this session well concentrate in more depth on the Eucharistic Prayer, the center and summit of the entire Mass. The dialogue that begins the prayer has two changes; well look at the reasons for them. Participants may be unaware of the many prefaces used during different seasons or for special feasts. Well look at these prefaces and at themes that recur in the Mass, such as forgiveness, praise, and thanksgiving. The Holy, Holy, Holy is based on scripture; well trace its origins in Isaiah and Matthew. Then the group will compare personal experiences of transcendence with this communal expression. The peoples great Amen calls for deliberate attention: What does it mean? How do we affirm our faith with our Amen? How can we be more conscious of this great mystery we enter into? For these and any other unanswered questions about the Eucharist, come to Session Sixand all the sessions! ATTENDANCE IS REQUIRED FOR ALL PARENTS of Faith Formation, First Communion, Pre-Confirmation, Confirmation/RCIA students.

Session #7
Wednesday, November 2 4:30 pm-6:00 pm (Bilingual) 7:00 pm-8:30 pm (Bilingual) Sunday, November 6 (same schedule as October 30) At this session, we will explore several meal narratives from scripture and then discuss a few changes to the Institution narrative. Because it is so important, well want to understand the text changes. Time is telescoped as we hear the words Jesus spoke over bread and wine at his last meal with his friends. Jesus participated in the Passover ritual many times, but made a significant change at the Last Supper. He gave us his Body and Blood, the ultimate sacrifice and covenant between God and humanity. Well also highlight the scriptural roots of the words of consecration. Even though the words are different, the cornerstone of our faith remains firm: bread and wine are transformed into Christs Body and Blood. Our acclamation, sung in different words, still voices our affirmation. Now is a wonderful opportunity to explore this profound mystery central to our faith. Let us take a fresh look and renew its meaning. Come and join us!

Parish and Diocesan News

CATHOLIC DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAS This weekends cupcake fundraiser is sponsored by the CDA. Thank you CDA for all your love and support of our parish. ALL SAINTS DAY On November 1, Tuesday the Church honors all the holy peopleknown and unknownwho now enjoy the full presence of God. They include martyrs, canonized saints, and people who have churches named for them as well as quiet, humble people who loved God and their neighbor and did what good they could during their life on earth. Some of these saints are probably friends of yours or members of your family, but they have lots of company. In the Book of Revelation (7:9) St. John tells us that there is a great multitude of saints in heaven and that they come from every nation and race on earth. This day, a holy day of obligation, was once called the feast of All Hallows (or holy ones). The night before was the Eve of All Hallows, Halloween. The following are the Masses for All Saints Day: October 31, Monday 5:30 pm (bilingual) Cherry & Bethel November 1, Tuesday 7:00 am (English) O Street 5:30 pm (Spanish) Del Rey 7:00 pm (Bilingual) Cherry & Bethel FIESTA DE TODOS LOS SANTOS El 1 de noviembre, martes, la Iglesia honra a todas las personas santasconocida y desconocidaque ahora disfruta de la presencia llena de Dios. Las Misas para esta festividad son: 31 de octubre, lunes 5:30 pm (bilinge) Cherry y Bethel 1 de noviembre, martes 7 am (ingls) Calle O 5:30 pm (espaol) Del Rey 7 pm (bilinge) Cherry y Bethel ALL SOULS DAY November 2, Wednesday On this day we remember to pray for the saints in waiting. These are people who must undergo some purification before they are ready to share in the presence of God. In 2 Maccabees 12:44-45, we learn that we can get them to heaven quicker by praying for them. Some souls have no one to pray for them. Thats why some people make it a point to pray for these abandoned souls. Others like to pray for the soul closest to achieving heaven. They enjoy feeling that they have helped to give someone the greatest gift possible: the full presence of God. ALL NIGHT EUCHARISTIC ADORATION November 3-4 Could you not keep watch and pray for one hour with me? (Mt. 26:40b) Begins at 5:00 pm on Thursday with the Spanish Mass to 7:00 am for the English Mass, at the old church on O Street. Page 5

PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS

Lord Jesus Christ, shepherd of souls, who called the apostles to be fishers of men, raise up new apostles in your church. Teach them that to serve you is to reign, to possess you is to possess all things. Kindle in the young hearts of our sons and daughters the fire of zeal of souls. Make them eager to spread your kingdom upon earth. Keep our present religious and seminarians healthy, both physically and spiritually. Grant them courage to follow you, who are the Way, the Truth and the Life, who lives and reigns forever and ever. Amen.

PRAYER FOR A NEW BISHOP Almighty God, send your Holy Spirit to guide those who will advise the Holy Father in the selection of the next Bishop of the Diocese of Fresno. May he have the zeal of Saint Paul, the priestly gifts of Saint John Vianney, the wisdom of a loving father and brother, and most of all, the heart of your Son, Jesus. We ask that the Blessed Virgin Mary intercede for us, and Saint Therese, our patroness, join us in this prayer, which we make through Christ, our Lord. Amen.
