Introduction
SAL R1 is a very reliable speed log measuring speed through the water (relative speed). It is the third generation of the SAL acoustic log designed to meet requirements as specified by authorities and shipowners. Its performance exceeds the various IMO specifications and has proven reliability in installations worldwide. The main features of the SAL R1 log are: Acoustic correlation technology. Small flush-mounted transducer with a diameter of only 32 mm. Transducer sea valve is standard. Flexible calibration and configuration allows very accurate reading over the speed range. Easy set-up and calibration procedures presented on LCD with menu-guided instructions. Enables retrofit in existing SAL pitot tube sea valve.

Overall Description
The basic version of SAL R1 includes sea valve, transducer, electronics unit all mounted in the bow area and indicators as selected installed in the bridge area. Details of the main components, fitted to a single bottom ship are shown above. The unit provides NMEA 0183/IEC 61162-1 output and power supply for SD-series of indicators. Additional output signals, such as 200 p/NM contacts, analogue voltage, etc., can be provided using options such as built-in converter board, R1P, or other interface units.

Construction
The electronics are mounted on a single circuit board enclosed in a splash proof steel box. Cable glands are provided in the bottom plate of the box. The transducer sea valve arrangement is available for both single and double bottom hull constructions and allows the transducer to be maintained and, if necessary, exchanged from inside the ship without drydocking.
