A FLIGHT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR THE FUTURE AVAILABLE TODAY


The New FM is part of our TopFlight Line, which encompasses comprehensive solutions dedicated to communication, navigation and surveillance. In association with Smiths Aerospace, Thales has developed a 2nd generation Flight Management System (FMS), called the New FM, for the Airbus A318/319/320/321 and A330/340 families. Resulting from the combination of the complementary strengths of major avionics suppliers, Thales and Smiths Aerospace, the New FM is an advanced Flight Management System compliant with Airbus specification and meeting with the airlines forward fit, as well as retrofit needs. The New FM provides unique features such as: LCD MCDU Largest certified navigation database capacity available for Airbus aircraft (5 mega byte) will be extended to 7Mb in the next software version. Superior flight planning flexibility: multiple revision temporary flight plan with full prediction and UNDO function, improved DIR TO interface Display of all flight plan transitions on Navigation Display helping airlines operate more efficiently in an evolving operational environment: RNP , FANS, ADS, time navigation.

LCD MCDU (Multifunction Control and Display System) Color Active Matrix Liquid Crystal Display (AMLCD) from THALES LCD increases viewing area by 15% and reduces parallax errors by 50%. Reliability has been boosted beyond 10 000 Hrs over older CRT technology. Both weight and power consumption have been decreased by 50%. Common hardware for all A320 and A330/340 aircraft. ENHANCED FLIGHT MANAGEMENT INTERFACE UNDO FUNCTION SMART TEMPORARY FLIGHT PLAN WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU FLY FM MODULE The New FM includes 2 powerful 32 bit processors, demonstrating superior system response to crew inputs and fast display of complete flight plan predictions. A 5 Mb navigation data base capacity is provided, with built-in hardware capability for more (extension to 7Mb in release 1 A). DESIGNED FOR FUTURE GROWTH

UNDO FUNCTION AND SMART TEMPORARY FLIGHT PLAN
The New FM enables single or multiple lateral and vertical revisions. Each time a revision is introduced, the crew is provided with a graphical display of the temporary trajectory on both the captain and F/O NDs, as well as full predictions on MCDU. An UNDO function allows the crew to delete the last entered revision. The crew is able to review and evaluate the economical impact of a possible revision while the aircraft remains guided along the original active flight plan, before making a decision to alter the flight trajectory.

WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU FLY


The New FM computes and displays all leg transitions from departure to arrival for all flight plans: active, temporary and secondary. This enhances safety and improves the accuracy of flight plan predictions and time navigation (Required Time of Arrival). Turn geometry conflicts in the flight plan path are automatically resolved by computing a seamless, flyable path. A high fidelity aircraft performance algorithm ensures that this path accurately represents what the aircraft will actually fly when coupled to the autopilot in NAV mode.

NAVIGATION DATA BASES


The New FM offers customers a choice of Navigation Data base suppliers. Smiths Aerospace works cooperatively with each of the navigation data base suppliers to ensure a high quality data base compatible with the New FM, as well as other models of FMS supplied by SmithsAerospace. Smiths Aerospace is compliant with AC20-153 and RTCA/DO-200A with regards to their processing of navigation data (LOA type 2).

CNS/ATM INTEROPERABILITY AND GROWTH


The New FM includes ample spare processor/power and memory to cope with Communication/Navigation/Surveillance/Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) evolutions, beyond RNP 0.3, FANS A, ADS-C, time navigation.
