I CO Fellowship Program
Directory of Training Centers
The ICO Fellowship Program was founded in 2000 on the recommendation of the then ICO Treasurer Prof. Balder Gloor, Switzerland. Due to his dedication and hard work, more than 300 Fellows have been supported through 2008. In June 2006, Prof. Veit-Peter Gabel, Germany, took over responsibility for the Fellowship Program. He has continued Prof. Gloors heritage with the same enthusiasm and commitment. The three-month ICO Fellowships were organized to help promising young ophthalmologists from developing nations improve their practical skills and broaden their perspectives of ophthalmology. Fellows are expected to bring their acquired knowledge and skills back to their native countries and participate in programs to preserve vision and prevent blindness. The Fellowship Program adheres to the global initiative Vision 2020 in spreading education and professionalism to all parts of the world and in promoting international collaboration between institutions dedicated to eye care. To reach these ambitious aims, the ICO has allocated more than US$ 200000 per year for the Fellowship Program. Since 2005, there has been an additional contribution of US$ 60000 per year through the ICO Foundation. From the very beginning, anonymous private benefactors as well as pharmaceutical companies and organizations such as Novartis, Santen, Local and International Rotary Clubs, CBM International, AOI, DOG, Pro Visus, Acritek, and Schiller Foundation have donated considerable amounts on a regular basis and have enhanced the possibilities of the Fellowship Program tremendously. It is the generous participation of more than 70 training centers around the world, however, that is responsible for the success of the Fellowship Program in the end. All centers agreed to not charging any fees for providing ICO Fellows with excellent scientific and clinical training. Fellows are taught practical ophthalmological skills and are encouraged to work directly with patients. ICO Hosts make an effort to assure a positive experience for the fellow, both inside and outside the hospital. Fellowship Board and hosts keep close contact during the fellowship in order to take best care of the fellow. After the fellowship, both fellows and hosts must report to the Fellowship Board, which guarantees a continuous evaluation of the Fellowship Program. Moreover, fellows are asked to keep on reporting to the Fellowship Board upon return to their countries of origin, which allows a long-term assessment of the fellowship achievements. These reports verify the usefulness and efficiency of the ICO Fellowship Program. Fellowships are offered in general ophthalmology, pediatric ophthalmology, uveitis, strabismus, glaucoma, cornea and external diseases, medical retina, vitreo-retinal surgery, oculoplastics, cataract surgery, ocular oncology, neuro-ophthalmology, ocular pathology and community eye health. The relevance to the candidates home institution and country receives particular attention. Candidates can apply only ONCE. There are two closing dates each year: April 30 and October 31. Candidates who are interested in the Fellowship Program can download the ICO Fellowship Application Package at http://www.icoph.org/fellow. It contains detailed information on the program and instructions on how to apply. Candidates are expected to read and strictly follow the directions. Before compiling and submitting their application to the Fellowship Board, candidates have to be accepted by a host. The Directory of Training Centers has been designed to guide them along the process of finding and contacting a potential host. Up-to-date information on the ICO Fellowship Program is available at http://www.icoph.org/fellow and through the ICO Fellowship Board: Prof. Dr. Veit-Peter Gabel, ICO Director for Fellowships, Mrs. Cordula Obermaier, ICO Administrator for Fellowships Email: fellowship@icoph.org; Fax: +49-941-20609899 3

I CO Fellowship Program
Finding a Host
Choosing a Subspecialty The first thing candidates are expected to do is decide which subspecialty they would like to get their training in. ICO Fellowships are offered in general ophthalmology, pediatric ophthalmology, uveitis, strabismus, glaucoma, cornea and external diseases, medical retina, vitreo-retinal surgery, oculoplastics, cataract surgery, ocular oncology, neuroophthalmology, ocular pathology and community eye health.

In the subsequent section, each subspecialty is listed separately and complemented by an alphabetical list of the ICO Hosts who offer it. Detailed information on each Training Center is given in the pages indicated.

ICO Fellowships are offered only in the places listed in the Directory of Training Centers. All ICO Training Centers are equally recommendable and offer very high standards.

ICO Fellowships must be completed in a foreign country. Candidates must be fluent (!) in one of the languages offered in their host department! Contacting a Host In fairness to fellow applicants, candidates are not allowed to contact two or more hosts simultaneously. If they do, they risk being excluded from the program!! When contacting their favorite host, candidates need to send him/her their CV,

find out if there is a vacancy at his/her department in the period in which they intend to do their fellowship, Hosts are asked to accept or decline a request within a two-week period. ask him/her if they would be accepted if awarded an ICO Fellowship.

If the host replies in the affirmative, candidates must confirm within seven days that they have received his/her invitation and that they accept it. If they fail to do so, the vacancy will be given to a fellow applicant and they risk being excluded from the program! After being accepted by an ICO Host, they are expected to continue the application process as outlined in the ICO Fellowship Application Package. If there is no reply from the host within a two-week period, candidates must contact the ICO Fellowship Board immediately! Only if rejected by a host, candidates may contact a second host! Fair Play ICO Training Centers host ICO Fellows without charging any fees. ICO Fellows receive particular attention and are provided with an excellent scientific and clinical training. ICO is extremely grateful for the generous cooperation of the training centers without which it would not be possible to offer the Fellowship Program. In return, it must be guaranteed that ICO Hosts can plan their vacancies "reliably". It must be avoided that generously offered vacancies are wasted due to the candidates' or fellows' unreliable or bad planning!! Vacancies are planned far ahead. Once a candidate receives an official notice of acceptance, the slot is reserved for him/her and will not be offered to another applicant.

ICO relies on the candidates' reasonable and fair behavior when they contact potential hosts. Candidates who are offered a fellowship position must officially decline the host's invitation if they are not able to maintain their application so that the vacancy may be offered to another person and does not remain blocked! A copy of such an apology letter has to be submitted to the Fellowship Board. Candidates who do not respect these guidelines will be excluded from the program! 4
