The Microsoft Security Software Advisor program is a benefit of the Microsoft Partner Program and provides
Microsoft partners an additional revenue opportunity, in addition to what they can earn through volume
licensing transactions and services engagements with customers. This guide relates to Microsoft security
products.
As a Microsoft Security Software Advisor, you are eligible to apply for fees if you assist customers in their
pre-sales software selection and are retained by the customer as the primary post-sales implementation
partner for their Microsoft software licenses. You do not need to be the ordering partner to be eligible for
these fees.
Overview
The Microsoft Security Software Advisor program provides fees to you, as a Microsoft partner, for your
assistance to end user customers in assessing their needs and selecting Microsoft security product
software. As a Microsoft Security Software Advisor who assists customers in their pre-sales assessment
and is retained by the customer as the primary post-sales implementation partner for the deployment of
Microsoft security software, you will be eligible to apply for Security Software Advisor fees. Fees are
available in consideration for your presales work with each such end user customer’s acquisition of
Microsoft licenses and associated Software Assurance.
Registration Information
To be eligible as a Microsoft Security Software Advisor to receive fees you need to complete the
following steps.
1. Read and understand this Microsoft Security Software Advisor program guide.
2. Read and sign the Microsoft Security Software Advisor fee addendum:
https://partners.microsoft.com/SecuritySoftwareAdvisor
Requirements
To participate in the Microsoft Security Software Advisor program, you must meet the requirements listed
below each time your company claims fees on a software license and/or SA acquisition. These
requirements must be met at the time your company claims the fee. There is no grace period to comply
with these requirements. You can claim your fees on an order at:
https://partner.microsoft.com/40029957.
1. Reaffirm your acceptance of the Microsoft Partner Program agreement. Microsoft Security Software
Advisors are required to join the Microsoft Partner Program at the Registered Member level to be
eligible for fees. For more details about the Microsoft Partner Program, please visit
http://www.microsoft.com/partners.
2. Review and state that you understand and agree to abide by this Microsoft Security Software Advisor
program guide and your previously signed Microsoft Software Advisor addendum.
3. Confirm you assisted your end user customer with pre-sales needs assessment and software
recommendation services for which you claim a Security Software Advisor fee.
4. Confirm you have been retained as the primary post sales implementation partner for the software
licenses on which you are claiming a Security Software Advisor fee.
5. Confirm that you have disclosed information about the Security Software Advisor fee if required to do
so. (If the prospective customer is a government entity or you have been retained by your customer
to do pre-sales needs assessment consulting, your company must disclose to your end user
customer that your company may receive Security Software Advisor fees from Microsoft for the
presales services you are providing.)
6. Have completed a Microsoft Security Competency company profile as part of your Microsoft
certification or Microsoft software advisor addendum, including identification of a person within your
company who will serve as Microsoft’s principal contact for this Security Software Advisor fee
program.
7. Meet Microsoft requirements for the solution you plan to claim fees for, at the time you claim your
Security Software Advisor fee. These requirements exist to ensure that participating companies
demonstrate a defined level of expertise with Microsoft security solutions, and are thus better able to
assist customers in achieving a successful Microsoft security solution. At present, Microsoft
certification status requirements are that participating companies pass a specified set of Microsoft
and or security industry exams, or otherwise demonstrate their expertise as may be required by their
particular Microsoft office until such exams are available in your geography. Microsoft reserves the
right to change these Microsoft certification requirements after providing commercially reasonable
notice.
8. Until further notice, previous Sybari Partners will be invited to be in the Microsoft Security Software
Advisor program after they join the Microsoft Partner Program as a Registered Member.
If you have not already done so, make arrangements to receive appropriate Microsoft and industry
certification training and complete the Microsoft certification exam requirements. Training classes are
available at: https://partner.microsoft.com/40014058
Fee Amounts
The calculation of the advisory fees is described in principle in the table below. Actual Security Software
Advisor fees will be calculated by Microsoft and are based on a percentage of net sales price to the
customer.
Security software fee payments vary by solution and may also vary by program, region, or country and
will be listed in the appropriate currency.
Donations:
Any Microsoft software covered by the Security Software Advisor fee program that has been donated by
Microsoft will not be eligible for Security Software Advisor fees.
When an end user customer adds and reports additional licenses and software assurance to its original
software acquisition before the end user customer’s Open License Value agreement annual anniversary,
it is called a “true-up.”
Your end user customer will have immediate use of these additional licenses and/or SA. However, your
end user customer will order and register them on the Open License Value agreement annual
anniversary. You will be eligible to claim your Security Software Advisor fee for these new licenses
and/or SA within 90 days of the software’s registration of these licenses. The additional advisor fees will
be paid to you as outlined above.
End user customers are authorized to return software under the Microsoft end user license agreement
(EULA) and Microsoft volume licensing programs. If you received a Security Software Advisor fee on
returned software you are responsible for prompt return of such fees. In addition to any other steps
Microsoft may take to collect reimbursement for such fees, your future fees may be used to re-pay the
fee.
If you are a Value Added Reseller for Microsoft and a Microsoft Security Software advisor, and you are in
default of your VAR agreement, you will not receive Security Software Advisor fees. If you become a
Microsoft VAR in good standing within a year from the denied fee claim, Microsoft will pay all of your
outstanding Security Software Advisor fees three months back from your VAR agreement activation.
Certain pre-conditions have to be met for payments to be made to Microsoft software advisors on any
particular order of Microsoft licenses or software assurance.
1. All of the end user customer’s Microsoft software licenses must have been purchased before the
Security Software Advisor fee claim.
2. The Security Software Advisor fee claim must be made within 90 days of the software purchase
date. The reason for allowing 90 days is to allow you flexibility to defer your claim to the next
quarter if needed.
3. If you have a negative Security Software Advisor fee balance (e.g., due to cancellation of a
license), you will not receive payment on future fees until the negative balance is paid in full. The
negative balance will be paid by crediting all appropriate future fees to the negative balance.
1. Access the Microsoft Security Software Advisor claims form tool at:
https://partner.microsoft.com/40029957.
2. Use the customer’s Authorization or License numbers to search on the security products
that you deployed. For Open Value and Select, the Enrollment number is needed. For the
Retail version you will need to provide the 25 Product Identification keys. If you are not
the reseller managing the software transaction in question, you will need to obtain the above
license information from the end-customer.
3. Submit a claim on the product and the appropriate Security Software Advisor fees will be
calculated.
You will not be eligible for Security Software Advisor fees unless you meet all of the above criteria, or
if your own company is the end user customer. You may only receive Security Software Advisor fees
for advising your end user customers.
Microsoft Security Software Advisors will be paid within 60 days once the claim has been approved.
Security Software Advisor fees may be paid to your company via check or wire transfer. Fee
payments will be reported via the Security Software Advisor Web site. Receipt of the Security
Software Advisor fee may be taxable. It is your company’s responsibility to pay all necessary
VAT and other taxes on fees received. Please consult your tax advisor.
No payments will be made until you claim the fee using the claims form tool on:
https://partner.microsoft.com/40029957.
If more than one software advisor claims the fee for the same transaction, we have the right to
confirm the details provided by the software advisors with the end user customer. Only one Security
Software Advisor can be the advisor on any particular order of Microsoft licenses or software
assurance. Microsoft reserves the right to remove a software advisor’s eligibility to claim future fees
in the event of a false claim of eligibility for such fees. If you have questions in relation to fee
payments, please email SSAhlp@microsoft.com
Thank you for participating in the Microsoft® Security Software Advisor program.
