26 October 2011 By Adam Gabbatt, Guardian News and Media Limited [Excerpts] Scott Olsen is in a "critical condition" in Highland hospital in Oakland, a hospital spokesman confirmed. Olsen, 24, suffered the head injury during protests in Oakland on Tuesday evening. More than 15 people were arrested after a crowd gathered to demonstrate against the police operation to clear two Occupy Oakland camps in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Jay Finneburgh, a photographer who was covering the protest, published pictures of Olsen lying on the ground. "This poor guy was right behind me when he was hit in the head with a police projectile. He went down hard and did not get up," Finneburgh wrote. Olsen was taken to Highland by fellow protesters. Keith Shannon, who served with Olsen in Iraq, arrived at the hospital after protesters contacted him through Facebook. He confirmed Olsen had a fractured skull, and said he had been told by a doctor Olsen also had brain swelling. A neurosurgeon was due to assess Olsen to determine if he needed surgery, Shannon said. He said Olsen had served two tours of Iraq, in 2006 and 2007. Olsen was in 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines with Shannon before leaving the military in 2010.

He moved to the San Francisco area in July and works for Opswat, a software company, living with Shannon in Daly City, just south of San Francisco. Shannon said Olsen was hit in the head by a tear gas canister or smoke canister shot by a police officer. He said Olsen had a curved scar on his forehead consistent with a canister. Protesters who had accompanied Olsen to Highland hospital got in touch with Shannon through Facebook, after Olsen said he lived with someone called "Keith". Shannon said he was told Olsen was unable to say his surname. Olsen is originally from Wisconsin and some of his family were planning to fly out to California to be with him, Shannon said. Video footage published to YouTube shows Olsen lying prone in front of a line of police. Around 10 people gather around him in an apparent attempt to provide aid, before a police officer throws an explosive device into their midst, scattering the group. Oakland police confirmed at a press conference that they used tear gas and baton rounds, but said they did not use flash bang grenades.

Olsen Joined The Protests Because He Thought The Banks Pretty Much Run Free And Unregulated And Are Never Held Accountable For Their Actions

[Thanks to SSG N (retd) who sent this in. She writes: And I thought spitting on the flag was bad.] October 26, 2011 By Aaron Glantz, Bay Citizen [Excerpts] Scott Olsen returned unscathed from two tours in Iraq only to be critically wounded during a violent confrontation between police and Occupy Oakland protesters. Aaron Hinde, an Iraq war veteran who, like Olsen, is a member of Iraq Veterans Against the War, said Olsen was brought to the hospital by two good Samaritans around 8 p.m. Tuesday evening and lost consciousness on the way to the hospital. Olsen's mother, Sandy Olsen of Onalaska, Wis., said her son joined the military out of high school in 2005 because he wanted to help the people over there, but soured on the war during his tours of duty. When he came home, she said, her son joined Iraq Veterans Against the War, a group which has joined many of the Occupy Wall Street protests around the country. His roommate, Shannon [Keith Shannon, who served alongside Olsen in the Marines in Iraq], said Olsen joined the protests because he thought the banks pretty much run free and unregulated and are never held accountable for their actions. It is about the people taking back the government as well as placing restrictions on the corporations, he said. Shannon said Olsen, who lives in a two-bedroom apartment in Daly City, had taken part in numerous Occupy Wall Street protests in San Francisco, joined the Occupy movement in Oakland for the first time Tuesday evening.

STUCK ON STUPID
The stupid articles about how police are part of the 1%. Its either put out by enemies of our movements to disorient people about the reality of who the 1% use to hold power in this society and keep the rest of us down, or by people too dim to go outdoors without supervision by someone at least five years old. Instead of emailing similar bullshit to this publication, shove it up your ass. T

Afghan War Claims Life Of Franklin Pierce Grad

The remains of Sgt. Nathan L. Wyrick, Oct. 11, 2011, at Dover Air Force Base, Del. Wyrick, of Enumclaw, Wash., died while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. (AP Photo/Steve Ruark) Oct. 12, 2011 By ADAM ASHTON; Staff writer, Bellingham Herald Members of a Lakewood church are mourning an Army sergeant from Tacoma who died in Afghanistan this week the second soldier with local ties reported killed in that country since Saturday. Sgt. Nathan Wyrick, 34, leaves behind a wife and four sons. The Defense Department has not sent an official release announcing his death, and a Pentagon spokeswoman declined to provide more information Tuesday evening. Word of Wyricks death circulated Tuesday among Joint Base Lewis-McChord soldiers who knew Wyrick from a past assignment and among his fellow worshipers at Lakewoods New Hope Community Church. Wyrick graduated from Franklin Pierce High School with the class of 1996 and played for the schools varsity football team, a school spokesman said. Wyrick left a lasting mark on his friends at New Hope church. They remembered him as a generous man who had served in Iraq and looked out for other Army families coping with deployments to the Middle East. He was a dad first and foremost, and a soldier second, said Andrea Wright, 28, of University Place.

Wright learned of Wyricks death Monday from the soldiers wife, Rachel Wyrick. They became close friends several years ago when Wrights husband was assigned to LewisMcChord. Another friend said Nathan Wyrick loved his children so much he tattooed their names on his body. He had an affection for other children, too, playing with Wrights four sons when her husband served on a deployment overseas. He was uncle Nay-Nay, she said. The Wyricks moved about a year and a half ago to Fort Drum, N.Y., when Nathan Wyrick was assigned to the 10th Mountain Division. Theyve visited the South Sound several times since then, friends said. Dan Livingston, a friend from New Hope Church, admired how Wyrick supported his family while serving in the Army. Livingston said Wyrick joined the service after first pursuing a career as a civilian electrician. He was a real passionate dad who joined the Army to support his family, Livingston said. Another friend remembered Wyrick as a gung ho soldier who never had a bad word to say about others. He was proud of the job he did, said Iona Parker, 60, of Steilacoom. He did it very well. He wasnt a shirker and he didnt badmouth anyone. The Wyricks stayed with the Parkers just before they moved to New York. Iona Parker said Nathan would spend time in the garage with her husband, talking about military life and sharing what it means to leave your family and the risks involved. He desperately loved his family, Parker said. Wyrick is the second soldier with local connections to lose his life in Afghanistan in recent days. Spc. Ricardo Cerros Jr., an Army Ranger from Lewis-McChord, was killed in combat Saturday.

Father Was Told His Son Was Shot In The Head By Enemy Fire

A Comrade Of His Son Told Him The U.S. Marine Was Killed In Afghanistan When A U.S. Tank Platoon Opened Fire On His Unit
Oct. 25, 2011 United Press International, Inc. SAN ANTONIO, Oct. 25 (UPI) -- A Texas doctor says a comrade of his son told him the U.S. Marine was killed in Afghanistan when a U.S. tank platoon opened fire on his unit. Lance Cpl. Benjamin Whetstone Schmidt died Oct. 6. His death is under investigation. Dr. David Schmidt, team physician for the San Antonio Spurs, said the other Marine decided to tell him what happened because he had learned The Wall Street Journal was investigating the incident, the San Antonio Express-News reported. He said the Marine did not want him to hear about the "friendly fire" story from the newspapers. Schmidt said he was told his son's unit was in a firefight in Helmand province. "What I've been told is that a tank platoon came upon them, mistook them for the bad guys and opened fire on the entire platoon. And that's how Benjamin died," Schmidt said. Earlier, the Marines hold him his son was shot in the head by enemy fire. Benjamin Schmidt's unit was based at Camp Pendleton in California. A spokesman there refused to comment to the Express-News on Monday night.

Traveling Soldier is the publication of the Military Resistance Organization. Telling the truth - about the occupations or the criminals running the government in Washington - is the first reason for Traveling Soldier. But we want to do more than tell the truth; we want to report on the resistance to Imperial wars and all other forms of injustice inside the armed forces. Our goal is for Traveling Soldier to become the thread that ties enlisted troops inside the armed services together. We want this newsletter to be a weapon to help organize resistance within the armed forces. We hope that you'll build a network of active duty organizers.

FORWARD OBSERVATIONS

At a time like this, scorching irony, not convincing argument, is needed. Oh had I the ability, and could reach the nations ear, I would, pour out a fiery stream of biting ridicule, blasting reproach, withering sarcasm, and stern rebuke. For it is not light that is needed, but fire; it is not the gentle shower, but thunder. We need the storm, the whirlwind, and the earthquake. The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppose. Frederick Douglass, 1852

I say that when troops cannot be counted on to follow orders because they see the futility and immorality of them THAT is the real key to ending a war. -- Al Jaccoma, Veterans For Peace

Greece Offers to Repay Bailout with Giant Horse

October 26, 2011 The Borowtiz Report BRUSSELS In what many are hailing as a breakthrough solution to Greeces crippling debt crisis, Greece today offered to repay a bailout from the European Union nations by giving them a gigantic horse. Finance ministers from sixteen EU nations awoke in Brussels this morning to find that a huge wooden horse had been wheeled into the city center overnight. The horse, measuring several stories in height, drew mixed responses from the finance ministers, many of whom said they would have preferred a cash repayment of the EUs bailout. But German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she welcomed the beautiful wooden horse, adding, What harm could it possibly do?

A Letter From Goldman Sachs:

Concerning Occupy Wall Street

October 18, 2011 The Borowitz Report NEW YORK (The Borowitz Report) The following is a letter released today by Lloyd Blankfein, the chairman of banking giant Goldman Sachs: Dear Investor: Up until now, Goldman Sachs has been silent on the subject of the protest movement known as Occupy Wall Street. That does not mean, however, that it has not been very much on our minds. As thousands have gathered in Lower Manhattan, passionately expressing their deep discontent with the status quo, we have taken note of these protests. And we have asked ourselves this question: How can we make money off them? The answer is the newly launched Goldman Sachs Global Rage Fund, whose investment objective is to monetize the Occupy Wall Street protests as they spread around the world. At Goldman, we recognize that the capitalist system as we know it is circling the drain but theres plenty of money to be made on the way down. The Rage Fund will seek out opportunities to invest in products that are poised to benefit from the spreading protests, from police batons and barricades to stun guns and forehead bandages. Furthermore, as clashes between police and protesters turn ever more violent, we are making significant bets on companies that manufacture replacements for broken windows and overturned cars, as well as the raw materials necessary for the construction and incineration of effigies. It would be tempting, at a time like this, to say Let them eat cake.

But at Goldman, we are actively seeking to corner the market in cake futures. We project that through our aggressive market manipulation, the price of a piece of cake will quadruple by the end of 2011. Please contact your Goldman representative for a full prospectus. As the world descends into a Darwinian free-for-all, the Goldman Sachs Rage Fund is a great way to tell the protesters, Occupy this. We havent felt so good about something weve sold since our souls. Sincerely, Lloyd Blankfein Chairman, Goldman Sachs
