Types of Reading Skills

If we want to get any kind of information we have to read some kind of book, passage , article are some lines .Reading is to understand something get meanings information and ideas from the written text . To get all the information in a small time some skills are used to to improve our reading for saving time and get all the meaning and idea of lines.

There are four types of reading skills.

Skimming >

reading rapidly for the main points

o Scanning >

reading rapidly to find a specific piece information

Extensive reading >

reading a longer text, often for pleasure with emphasis on overall meaning

Intensive reading >

reading a short text for detailed information

Skimming
(Running the eyes over quickly, to get the gist) Skimming is used to quickly gather the most important information, or 'gist'. Use skimming to quickly get up to speed on a current business situation. It's not essential to understand each word when skimming. Skimming is more complex task than scanning because it requires the reader to organize and remember some of information given by author . this method involves the student in questioning reading review and reciting . skiming is used in making decision on how to approach a text such as when determining if a carreul reading is deserving. Skiming is used when reading some generl question in mind When you read the newspaper, you're probably not reading it word-by-word, instead you're scanning the text. Skimming is done at a speed three to four times faster than normal reading. People often skim when they have lots of material to read in a limited amount of time. Use skimming when you want to see if an article may be of interest in your research.

Scanning
(Looking for a particular piece of information) Scanning is quick reading to get up find particular piece of information scanning is used on schedules meeting is requires. scanning is used often with technical scientific or professional material to locate specific information Scanning is a technique you often use when looking up a word in the telephone book or dictionary. You search for key words or ideas. In most cases, you know what you're looking for, so you're concentrating on finding a particular answer. Scanning involves moving your eyes quickly down the page seeking specific words and phrases. Scanning is also used when you first find a resource to determine whether it will answer your questions. Once you've scanned the document, you might go back and skim it. When scanning, look for the author's use of organizers such as numbers, letters, steps, or the words, first, second, or next. Look for words that are bold faced, italics, or in a different font size, style, or color. Sometimes the author will put key ideas in the margin.

Extensive reading
(Longer texts for pleasure and needing global understanding) Extensive reading is used to obtain a general understanding of a subject and includes reading longer texts for pleasure, as well as business books. Use extensive reading skills to improve your general knowledge the aim of extensive reading is to built reader confidence and enjoyment. extensive reading is always done for the compheriension of main idea not for specific detail. To increase student confidence in their English reading ability . To increase student motivation in their English reading .to increase student reading fluency, specifically .to decrease dependence on word by word comprehension .to increase reading speed (number of pages read per hour) .to increase student narrative interpreting ability, specifically so that students .identify and record key/interesting points in a narrative .to write and discuss in English their own ideas and opinions about what has been read, and their own reading progress. to foster a clear, strong and constant sense of personal success in reading English
