Executive Summary

Airspan Networks AS4030 system is a high end, sophisticated wireless point to multipoint fixed access system designed to deliver high bit-rate ATM, and IP packet data and E1 / Fractional E1 circuit services. AS4030 is a new platform designed for symmetric applications at bit rates between 512kbit/s and 48Mbit/s. AS4030 is an ATM centric platform, with the capability to support all telecommunications services (Voice, Synchronous Data, Fractional and whole E1s) that can be carried across an ATM network. AS4030 is designed for Network Operators, Carriers and Internet Service Providers who wish to offer high end premium services. The system is ideal as either an enhancement to existing network (Wired or Wireless), or as a platform to deploy a completely new network. Airspans AS4030 operates in various frequency bands from 3400MHz to 3800 MHz and covers most of the licensed FWA spectrum allocations available to operators today. In common with Airspans AS4000, and AS4020, AS4030 can be described as a flexible access network transmission system. AS4030 can provide a variety of services from a single platform. Significantly, it is able to provide services that are the same quality and performance as wired equivalent, by supporting transparent connections to the operators network. Each AS4030 system comprises: Subscriber Terminals (STs), which offer a wide range of service combinations, including ATM only, IP only, E1 plus IP and IP plus voice terminals. Central Terminals (CTs), Airspans radio base stations. These provide the radio links to the STs and the connectivity back into the core network. Network Management System (Netspan AS8200) offers configuration, alarm, test and performance information RF planning tool, AS9020 (Airplan), supports all of the functionality required to plan the deployment of an AS4030 network.

AS4030 also has a set of advanced facilities to enable ISPs to manage Point of Presence Traffic over the FWA network. It offers sophisticated Quality of Service (QoS) solutions intended to manage Service Level Agreements based on Committed Information Rates, and provide IP statistics and easy interfacing to customer care systems. Airspan has a well established track record. Airspan has deployed systems that support numerous applications within both existing and new telecommunications networks and has been deployed in both developed and developing country environments. At March 2001, Airspan had installed over 200,000 lines of capacity and has over 90 operational networks in more than 45 countries.

Class of operation
The ETSI Standard EN301 021 [Fixed Radio Systems; Point -to-multipoint equipment; Time division Multiple access (TDMA); Point-to-Multipoint digital radio systems bands in the range 3 GHz to 11 GHz] defines eight System Types A, B, C, D, E, F, G and HC. These systems represent different spectral efficiency in term of gross-bit-rate/Hz. The classes specifically are: A and E: lower complexity modulation formats (e.g. 4 states or equivalent); HC: lower complexity modulation formats as System Type A (e.g. 4 states or equivalent), but with higher requirements for receiver sensitivity and tolerance to interference; B and F: medium complexity modulation formats (e.g. 16 states or equivalent); C: lower complexity modulation formats (e.g. 4 states or equivalent) for systems with a gross bit rate below 2 Mb/s and limited to TDD operation only; D and G: higher complexity modulation formats (e.g. 64 states or equivalent). The E, F and G system types are intended for OFDM modulation and have a different spectrum mask.

The AS4030 System conforms to the following System Types: QPSK Modulation Type A 16 QAM Modulation Type B 64 QAM Modulation Type D

The relevant masks are shown below. For Details please refer to EN 301-021.

Equalizer
AS4030 uses a non-linear Decision Feedback Equaliser (DFE) to equalise the radio channel. Downlink adaption takes place at regular intervals based on a broadcast training sequence (every l0ms); uplink adaption rate is based on the rate of channel change per ST. If the channel post equalisation CNR is satisfactory, no further equalisation adaption takes place. If the channel changes significantly, the equalisation adaption rate is increased to match the channel variation rate.

Chapter 10. Element Management System [EMS]

Page 42 AS4030 Release Specification 3.0

Element Management System [EMS]

Airspan Networks Inc

Overview
An AS4030 network is comprised of one or more Base Stations (BS). Each Base Station consists of a Central Terminal Indoor Control Unit (CT-ICU) which controls a number of Central Terminal Outdoor Units (CT-ODUs), typically four. Each CT-ODU provides a sector or cell of wireless coverage to a set of Subscribers. The ST consists of a Subscriber Outdoor Unit (ST-ODU) controlled by a Subscriber Indoor Control Unit (ST-ICU). The AS4030 Element Management System is based entirely on industry-standard protocols. SNMP is used to manage all AS4030 network elements including ICUs and ODUs. On the agent side, each ICU is allocated a management IP address and runs an SNMP agent. The SNMP agent provides a northbound management interface supporting both standard MIBs such as SNMPV2-MIB and IF-MIB along with a number of enterprise-specific MIBs. The agent allows the control and monitoring of both the ICU and any attached ODUs. Each ODU is represented as a network interface in the SNMP interfaces table (ifTable). On the manager side, a number of applications are provided which enable the network operator to manage the AS4030 network elements. These applications interface both to the SNMP agents running on the ICUs and to services running on the element management station.

Release 3.0 functionality

Release 3.0 of the AS4030 Element Management System is used to manage a statically configured AS4030 network. In this release, the agents provide status, statistics and diagnostic information to the NMS.

Agent functionality
Each ICU runs an SNMP agent and this agent provides a northbound SNMP interface to the NMS. Each ODD is managed by a driverd process. The driverd process interfaces to the SNMP agent using AgentX (RFC 2741). System-level management functionality is provided by the SNMP agent itself while ODU-level functionality is provided via AgentX by the driverd process. The SNMP agent supports SNMP V1, V2c and V3 authentication and privacy support. In Release 3.0, the SNMP agent supports the following standard MIBs: system group (RFC 1907) interfaces table (RFC 2863) ip group (RFC 2011) icmp group (RFC 2011) tcp group (RFC 2012) udp group (RFC 2013) snmp group (RFC 1907) snmpEngine group (RFC 2571) snmpMPD group (RFC 2572) usmUser group and usmStats group (RFC 2574) vacm MIB (RFC 2575)

The SNMP agent supports a number of enterprise-specific MIBs: configuration and fault management of ICUs and ODUs management of base station specific data ODU statistics and performance data ODU/ICU diagnostic and debugging information ST registration functionality ST ICU management configuration

Manager functionality
On the manager side, a number of applications are provided which are used to manage a AS4030 network. These applications mainly interface to the enterprise-specific MIBs. All applications support SNMP V1, V2c and V3. The following applications are provided:

vsnet
This Application is the top-level Application used to manage a AS4030 network. It is used to list the CT-ICUs of all the Base Stations in the network. CT-ICUs can be added and deleted from this list. Double-clicking on a CT-ICU from the list launches the AS4030 Base Station Configuration Tool (vsbs) for that Base Station.

vsbs
This Application is used to manage a particular AS4030 Base Station. It communicates with the SNMP agent running on the CT-ICU. It presents system group information including sysName, sysDescr, sysupTime, sysLocation, and sysContact. It displays the list of Central Terminal ODUs controlled by that CT-ICU and allows the user to provision new Central Terminal ODUs. It displays a list of Subscribers which are or are provisioned to register with this base station. It provides access to the syslog table. It provides an interface to the event control group.

vSTser
This Application is used to manage the details of a particular user at the Base Station. It gives you access to registration details for the user including time last registered, CT at which it registered and management IP configuration information. It also allows you to provision VCs for the user either before or while the user is registered with the Base Station.

vsST
This Application is used to manage a particular AS4030 ST. It communicates with the SNMP agent running on the ST-ICU. It presents system group information including sysName, sysDescr, sysupTime, sysLocation, and sysContact. It displays information on the Subscriber Terminal ODU controlled by that ICU. It provides access to the syslog table. It provides an interface to the event control group.

vsodu
This Application is used to manage a AS4030 ODU. It communicates with the SNMP agent running on the appropriate ICU. It presents status information about the ODU including identifier, software and hardware version information and FPGA-boot information. It display upstream and downstream channelisation information and, if managing an CT-ODU, allows the selection of upstream and downstream channels. It displays a variety of statistics including modem statistics, MAC statistics and aggregate interface statistics.

vsalarm
This Application is used to view and manage SNMP traps generated by units in a AS4030 network. It communicates with a alarm daemon (vsalarmd) running on a host in the network. Multiple vsalarm applications are provided with a unified view of the alarms database. Alarms present information including an id, the date and time the alarm was received, the source of the alarm and a configurable message with the cause of the alarm. Alarms can be acknowledged or deleted.

vsalarmconf
This application is used to configure how alarms are processed and presented by the alarm daemon (vsalarmd). It presents a list of all possible alarms that can be generated by AS4030 units and for each alarm allows the user to configure how the alarm is processed. First, the user can configure the Page 45 AS4030 Release Specification 3.0 Element Management System [EMS]

Airspan Networks Inc

format of the message to be presented to vsalarm applications. Second, the user can specify a command that is to be executed in response to the receipt of an alarm. For example this can be used to send an email to a network manager when an Central Terminal goes down.

vsalarmd
This application is the alarm daemon. It receives SNMP traps from the AS4030 network and logs those traps persistently. It executes any command that has been specified for an alarm by vsalarmconf. It formats the alarm message according to formats specified by vsalarmconf. It handles vsalarm applications forwarding alarms to them and processing acknowledgements and deletions.
