Chain-up mandatory for trucks

BC's minimum wage will increase to $9.50 tomorrow, Nov. 1st. At the same time, the minimum wage rate for liquor servers will increase to $8.75. This is the second increase to the minimum wage this year, and follows on Premier Christy Clark's commitment in March 2011 to increase minimum wage in three stages to $10.25 by May 1, 2012, providing more support for BC workers and families.

The MoT advises that commercial drivers who do not or cannot chain up their vehicles properly at the Box Canyon chain-up zone (just south of the snow shed) on the Coquihalla Hwy, as required by conditions, risk being turned around and/or having their vehicles towed at the carriers expense. Box Canyon is a particular safety challenge for drivers, maintenance crews and enforcement officers, as it receives some of the most unpredictable weather in the province, becomes congested quickly when vehicles must chain up, and is close to a number of dangerous avalanche zones that must be kept clear from vehicle backups. Five years ago, trucks over 27,000+ kg GVW not even carrying chains was a major concern, but now less than 1% of commercial vehicles are cited for not carrying chains. More recently, the focus has been on a lack of practice in installing chains among less experienced drivers.
