An extract of changes in rules and systems of Lovely Professional University (applicable w.e.f.

Session 2011-12)

Lovely Professional University has always valued feedback from its different stakeholders especially from students and teachers. We can boast of a formal system of feedback in the University which supplements the informal mechanisms for feedback on issues such as curriculum, pedagogy, evaluation and other rules and systems of the University. Feedbacks on some key issues were taken from students and staff in session 2010-11. All the feedbacks were thoroughly considered and after deliberations in high level committees the following changes have been made in the Academic & Examination Rules for Regular Programmes which have been enforced w.e.f. Academic Session 2011-12.

1. Attendance: Weightage in Evaluation has been reduced to 5%. Minimum Attendance requirement: (a) For all Regular programmes: No change. A student should attend 80% or more in aggregate of delivered classes, in all registered courses of theory (lectures plus tutorial) and practical (including workshops training, seminar, projects, industrial training etc.) of the concerned term including optional / specialization / elective and backlog courses. Relaxation of 10% in lieu of medical leaves is being given to the students i.e., the operational minimum attendance requirement will be 70%. No medical certificates need to be submitted by a student. This relaxation of 10% is only for appearing in ETE. Marks assigned to attendance in total evaluation of a regular course have been reduced from 10 to 5 marks. (b) Part-time programmes: A student should attend 70% or more in aggregate of delivered classes, in all registered courses of theory (lectures plus tutorial) and practical (including workshops training, seminar, projects, industrial training etc.) of the concerned term including optional / specialization / elective and backlog courses. Relaxation of 10% in lieu of medical leaves is given to the students i.e., the operational minimum attendance requirement will be 60%. This relaxation of 10% is only for appearing in ETE. No medical certificates need to be submitted by a student. There will be no marks for attendance, but the benefit of bonus attendance will be given as applicable to regular programmes.

Marks have also been assigned for attendance for the slab 70% to 75%.

Bonus attendance: Due to certain exigencies if a student is not able to meet the minimum requirements of attendance, bonus attendance can be earned on the basis of his past attendance record. Bonus attendance can be earned by the students of regular as well as part-time programmes. The bonus attendance would be calculated on the basis of the aggregate attendance of the previous terms/years(for annual programmes) and allowed as per the following: Attendance %age in aggregate in the previous term(s) / years(for annual programmes) 90% or more 85% or more but less that 90% 80% or more but less that 85% 75% or more but less that 80% 70% or more but less that 75% Table 2: Bonus Attendance The facility of bonus attendance will enable the students to plan their leaves and also find time to participate in activities attend conferences, visit industries, prepare for benchmark tests & employment examinations etc. Bonus attendance of a maximum of 20% may be earned by a student who has good attendance record in the immediate previous two terms. Bonus attendance earned from the previous term(s) will be added to compute the attendance requirement of the current term only if a students aggregate attendance in current term is more than or equal to 50% for regular programmes and 40% for parttime programmes. The benefit of bonus attendance will only be for calculating the eligibility condition for appearing in ETE. Advantage of Bonus attendance points will not be given for marks. Bonus attendance % (for regular & part-time) 10 8 6 4 2

I. Calculation of Bonus attendance in programmes offered under semester system (a) In case of Freshmen: In the first term of the first year / year of admission, where previous two terms aggregate attendance is not available, bonus percentage will be calculated as per Table 2 separately for before MTE and after MTE periods. The higher of the two bonus percentages will be doubled to determine the actual bonus attendance earned by a student. In the second term of the first year / year of admission, bonus percentage will be calculated as per Table 2 for the previous term and then doubled to determine the actual bonus attendance earned by a student. From the second year (third term) onwards, bonus attendance will be calculated as per the formula applicable to continuing students.

(b) In case of continuing students: For awarding bonus attendance to a student, the aggregate attendance of the immediate previous two terms will be taken into consideration. Bonus percentage will be calculated as per Table 2 for each of the previous two terms and then added to determine the actual bonus attendance earned by a student.

Illustration: A student of a regular programme who falls sick in the first term of 201011, had an aggregate attendance of 87% in the first term and 82% in the second term of session 2009-10. He is thus eligible for a bonus attendance of 14% (i.e. 08% for first term of session 2009-10 and 06% for second term of session 2009-10). If his attendance in the first term of 2010-11 (his current term) is 64% (i.e. less than the operational minimum attendance requirement of 70%), then 14% bonus attendance will be added in the aggregate attendance of current term bringing it to 78% which is above the operational minimum attendance requirement of 70%. So the student is allowed to appear in ETE of all the courses in the current term. However, if this students attendance in the first term of 2010-11 (his current term) were 52% (48% in course C1, 50% in Course C2 and 58% in Course 3), then when 14% bonus attendance is added in the aggregate attendance of current term, the aggregate attendance will still be less than 70%, and the student may not be allowed to appear in ETE of all the courses. However, since the aggregate attendance in the current term is above 50%, the bonus attendance will be added to attendance of every course and he will be allowed to appear in those courses where the attendance with bonus points is above 70%. So in this case the student will be eligible to appear in the ETE of Course 3 only where the attendance after adding bonus becomes 72%.

II. Calculation of Bonus attendance in programmes offered under annual system (a) In case of Freshmen: In the first year / year of admission, where previous two years aggregate attendance is not available, bonus percentage will be calculated as per Table 2 separately for before MTE and after MTE periods. Here MTE refers to the Mid Term Exam as per the Academic Calendar of Annual Programmes. The higher of the two bonus percentages will be doubled to determine the actual bonus attendance earned by a student. The same will be applicable to annual programmes having duration of one year. (b) In case of continuing students: In the second year, bonus percentage will be calculated as per Table 2 for the previous year and then doubled to determine the actual bonus attendance earned by a student. From the third year onwards, bonus percentage will be calculated as per Table 2 for each of the previous two years and then added to determine the actual bonus attendance earned by a student. 2. Components of Evaluation: Reduction in Weightage of CA in evaluation Increase in weightage of MTE and ETE Academic Tasks: - Number of academic tasks such as assignments, tests etc. have been reduced to 2 best out of 3 in order to give more time to students for self study Evaluation of Capstone Projects/major/minor projects: The number of evaluations for such courses has been reduced from 3 to 2. The two evaluations will be scheduled along with the MTE and the ETE.

3. Grading System: Two new grades B- and C- have been introduced. This would help in evaluating the performance of students in a better way. Letter Grade Performance Grade Point___ _ A+ Outstanding 10 A Very good 9 B Good 8 BAbove Average 7 C Average 6 CBelow Average 5 D Marginal 4 E Reappear 0 F Failing 0 I Incomplete -R Resubmission (in case of Projects/Dissertations or Other similar courses) -S Satisfactory (for zero credit courses only) -U Unsatisfactory (for zero credit course only)__ --

4. Question paper pattern: The question paper pattern has been changed to provide more choices to the students. MTE: Diploma Type of Q. 5. Passing condition: To obtain a Pass Grade (A+, A, B, B-, C, C- and D) in a course, a student must obtain: A Minimum of 35% marks in the course as a whole (Attendance + CA + MTE + ETE) subject to fulfilling any one of the following conditions: (i) Scoring minimum 30% marks in ETE , or (ii) Scoring minimum 30% in ETE and MTE taken together.

If any regulatory authority has imposed stricter conditions on passing for a particular programme, the same shall prevail. If any of the regulatory authorities require a student to pass Theory and Practical components of a course separately, the same shall prevail. A student failing to pass any one component (Practical or Theory) will re-appear for the respective component in the subsequent term(s) subject to whatever other conditions are prescribed.
