berries pack a lot of flavor, as
well as important nutrients and
antioxidants, and can be added
to a variety of dishes, from
muffins and cookies to salads
and even quesadillas.
Due to their sweet taste,
healthful benefits and versatility,
cranberries continue to be
increasingly popular. The tiny
berry, one of only three fruits
native to North America, is
grown in several states around
the country, but Wisconsin-
based growers alone produce
more than half of the worlds
entire supply of cranberries.
Cranberry Oat Bran Muffins
Makes: 1 dozen muffins
1-1/2 cups flour
1/2 cup oat bran
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup sugar
3 teaspoons baking powder
2 eggs
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 cup milk
1 cup fresh cranberries, chopped
1 cup chopped walnuts
1 teaspoon orange peel, grated
Preheat oven to 400F. Mix
flour, oat bran, salt, sugar and
baking powder. Set aside. Beat
together eggs, vegetable oil and
milk; add to dry ingredients.
Add cranberries, walnuts and
orange peel. Stir all together,
batter may be lumpy. Pour into
muffin tins and bake 20 minutes
at 400F.
Turkey, Cranberry & Brie
Quesadillas
Makes: 8 quesadillas
Chive Topping:
1/2 cup sour cream, low fat
1 ounce (1/2 cup) chives, thinly
sliced
1 teaspoon fresh garlic, minced
1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper,
ground
Quesadillas:
2 cups Brie, rind removed
8 8-inch flour tortillas, low fat
1 pound turkey, cooked and
shredded
1 cup sweetened-dried cranber-
ries
1/2 cup walnuts, toasted and
chopped
1/2 cup chives, thinly sliced
Preheat oven to 350F. Make
the Chive Topping. Pure top-
ping ingredients in food proces-
sor until smooth. Refrigerate.
Prepare the Quesadillas.
Spread 1/4 cup Brie over half of
tortilla. Layer 1/4 cup turkey,
1/8 cup cranberries, 1 table-
spoon walnuts and 1 tablespoon
chives. Fold tortilla in half. Bake
quesadillas on baking sheet 8 to
10 minutes until cheese is melt-
ed. Serve with chive topping.

Remember fresh cranberries
are only available seasonally
from October through
December. However, the berries
do freeze well.
Dont be afraid to place
fresh cranberries into the freezer
for up to a year. For maximum
freshness, use a second airtight
storage bag.
If youre planning to freeze
your cranberries, do not wash
beforehand. Rather, wash upon
thawing.

email boxes.
Yes, there are legitimate com-
panies. If youve been working
for one for a long time and are
happy with them, feel free to
continue. But if you want to get
started now, dont. Wading
through the myriad offers and
trying to decide which are on the
level is asking for trouble.
When you sign up, youre
likely to be asked for your name,
address, email address and bank
account information for
instant receipt of your pay via
wire transfer. Thats too much
information for a company you
dont know. You also may be
asked to pay a fee to sign up, or
for certification.
Barring that, chances are that
the only shopping youll be
asked to do will involve receiv-
ing checks in the mail with
instructions to take out your fee
and send them the balance of the
money by MoneyGram. The
check will end up being no
good, and youll be out the
money you wired to them.
Another inventive scam
involves offers to pay people to
put advertising signs on their
cars and drive around. Amounts
offered are up to $1,000 in
advance and then $500 per week

drive or where you drive. A
legitimate advertiser would
want to know where his ads
would be seen. Your payment
will be in the form of a check,
which you are instructed to cash,
take out your fee, and send the
balance by Western Union back

portable electric space heaters
begin to climb.
Careful selection and the
observance of safety rules is
the best solution to the dilem-
ma of whether or not to use a
space heater.
If youre using an older
model, check it thoroughly for
problems frayed cord, dam-
aged heating elements, dented
or rusted casing. Replace dam-
aged space heaters.
When purchasing a new
electric space heater, make
sure it has the Underwriters
Laboratory (UL) label
attached to it. Avoid heaters
that feature open heating
elements (heating elements
protected only by a mesh
grille). An estimated 6,000
people a year are treated in
hospital emergency rooms for
burns caused by contacting the
hot surfaces of room heaters.
Heaters that circulate warmed
liquid or oil through a closed
system are a safer option.
Set up the space heater at
least three feet away from fur-
niture, drapes, bedding and
other combustible materials.
Do not place or prop it up on
anything; put it flat on the
floor, away from foot traffic.
Be especially careful to keep
children and pets away from
the heater, and operate only
when adults are in the room.
When you go to bed, turn the
heater off stay warm under-
neath the covers instead.

the cord is marked No. 14 or
No. 12 American Wire Gauge

Fort Sumner is famous for
two reasons: Billy the Kid and
The Long Walk. Although the
story of Billy the Kid will never
be as important as the very seri-
ous history of the Navajos Long
Walk and imprisonment, the
death of Billy the Kid is what
draws most tourists to Fort
Sumner. And actually the two
stories share something the
same house.
Who is it?
Sheriff Pat Garrett knew that
the outlaw Billy the Kid was
somewhere in the Fort Sumner
area. On July 14, 1881, Sheriff
Garrett set out to talk to one of
Billys friends, Pete Maxwell.
Near midnight, Garrett sat talk-
ing with Pete in Maxwells dark
bedroom. Someone entered
through the doorway. In the
ensuing silence, the intruder
whispered, Quin es?
Quin es? Garrett, recogniz-
ing the voice, fired twice in the
dark, killing Billy the Kid.
Billy was buried the next day
in the Fort Sumner military
cemetery. A wooden cross
marked his grave until the late
1880s when the cross was said
to have been taken to a museum
back east. It was never recov-
ered. Billy went without a
gravestone for over 50 years.
In 1940 a Coloradan donated
the foot marker that is there
today. The top of the pointed
stone reads, Truth and

California to retrieve it. Billy the
Kids tombstone now sits
behind an iron fence shackled to
the ground itself.
And the House Where He
Died?
In 1869, the now-abandoned
Fort Sumner was bought by
rancher Lucien Maxwell. He
took the fort commanders quar-
ters for his own house. Of
course, all these buildings had
been built with the forced labor
of the Navajos and Apaches. It
was in this same house, with all
that bad history, that Billy the
Kid died in the bedroom of
Lucien Maxwells son, Pete.

from molds of original clay
sculptures, most were usually
no taller than 1-1/2 to 2-1/2
inches.

a Tuesday, is National Memory
Screening Day, put on by the
Alzheimers Foundation of
America.
A news release issued by
Alzheimers Disease
International says that there
could be 28 million people in the
world with dementia but no
diagnosis yet. The screening
events provide free memory
screenings using tasks and ques-
tions that can detect problems
early. Tests will check memory,
thinking and language skills.
While the tests dont give a true
diagnosis, they can provide indi-
cations that a medical exam is
needed.
Meanwhile, there is a possible
Alzheimers vaccine on the hori-
zon. In the disease, the amyloid
protein stays in the brain and
turns into plaque, which causes
problems with the nerves that
transport information through the
brain. Researchers are looking at
a way to stop the body from pro-
ducing too much of the amyloid
by targeting the receptors that
move it into the brain.
At this point only small ani-
mals have been used in the
research, but the results are
promising enough that the next
step is to move into large-animal
research.

locations will appear. Youll need
to sign up in advance to ensure a
spot.

might not be Alzheimers. It
could easily be something as
simple as a vitamin deficiency.

This is a good time to con-
sider the needs of these plants
when brought indoors. All
houseplants will need a location
with bright light (not necessarily
direct sunlight), and protection
from drafts and dry, hot air from
furnace registers. Adequate
water, reduced fertilization, and
relatively cool temperatures are
beneficial for houseplants.
Short-day plants are those
that flower in the winter, such as
poinsettias, Christmas cacti and
kalanchoe. These require special
considerations. Bright light is
important during the day, but
they must have nights that are
not interrupted by light. These
should be kept in a room in
which lights will not be turned
on during the night.

We have passed the autum-
nal equinox, and the days are
now shorter than the nights. It
will soon be time to bring any
houseplants indoors. But, first a
few tips.
Houseplants kept outdoors
are somewhat protected from
many insect problems by natural
predators that feed on harmful
insects. Once you bring the
plants inside, the harmful insects
may begin increasing their pop-
ulations, forcing you to take
measures to control these
insects. As long as you can leave
the plants outside, this problem
is delayed. When you bring the
plants inside, watch for pests so
that you can remove them man-
ually or control them with meas-
ures appropriate for indoor use.
Houseplants that have spent
the summer outdoors should
be brought inside soon.
Short-day plants, like
Christmas cactus, need
special care once indoors.
They should not be in a win-
dow near bright outdoor lights
(street lights or bright security
lights). If room lights are needed
or if there is bright outdoor light
that illuminates these plants at
night, you can move them to a
closet each night (for approxi-
mately 14 hours), or you can
cover them with dark fabric or a
black garbage bag.
Be sure to remove covering
material or return the plants to
the light each morning. These
plants also develop flowers
more readily if they receive
cool night temperatures.
Temperatures of 60 degrees or
lower will benefit flowering.
Day temperatures can be up to
80 degrees.

On Nov. 7, 1940, the Tacoma
Narrows Bridge collapses due to
high winds. At the time, wind
forces were not taken into consid-
eration by engineers and designers.
The remains of the bridge, at the
bottom of Puget Sound, form one
of the largest man-made reefs in
the world.
On Nov. 8, 1847, Bram Stoker,
author of the horror novel
Dracula, is born in Clontarf,
Dublin, Ireland. Stokers villain-
ous, blood-sucking creation, the
vampire Count Dracula, became a
pop-culture icon and has been fea-
tured in hundreds of movies, books
and plays.
On Nov. 9, 1965, Roger Allen
LaPorte, a 22-year-old member of
the Catholic Worker movement,
immolates himself in front of the
United Nations headquarters in
New York. Before dying, LaPorte,
who was against war, declared that
he did it as a religious act.
On Nov. 10, 1903, Mary
Anderson receives patent No.
743,801 for her window cleaning
device for electric cars and other
vehicles to remove snow, ice or
sleet from the window. Anderson
tried to sell it to a Canadian manu-
facturing firm, but the company
said the device had no practical
value.
On Nov. 11, 1921, three years
after the end of World War I, the
Tomb of the Unknowns is dedi-
cated at Arlington National
Cemetery in Virginia when an
unknown American soldier is
buried. A two-inch layer of soil
brought from France was placed
below the coffin so that the soldier
might rest forever atop the earth
on which he died.
On Nov. 12, 1954, Ellis Island,
the gateway to America, shuts it
doors after processing more than
12 million immigrants since open-
ing in 1892. First- and second-class
passengers had easily passed
through customs, but those in third
class underwent medical inspec-
tions to ensure they didnt have a
contagious disease.

know that I usual-
ly have my dog
Abbey with me
as I travel on
appointments. I
love dogs.
Most of my
clients have dogs.
But figuring out
how to keep our
favorite pooches
from destroying
the new landscape
is an ever-present
issue.
Dog urine on grass will do
severe damage and the dog
bombs littering the landscape
are unsightly. Alternating
where your dog hangs out is
good for the dog and takes
pressure off of the landscape.
But dog runs can be a blessing
or a cruel cage, depending on
how you manage the situation.
Instead, consider gating the
side yards to use as dog runs,
and have doggie doors open to
those areas. Gating both sides
provides either shade for the
summer months or sun to
warm the dog in the winter.
This setup allows your dog to
socialize with the neighbor
dogs and keep up on the local
gossip.
As for the surface, putting
in grass and a sprinkler system
where your dogs will spend
most of their day is a waste of
time and money. The dog will
ruin the grass with urine and
soil compaction.
Gravel is hard on your
friends feet and uncomfort-
able to lie on. I removed the
gravel at my house and
installed crusher fines.
Mulch seems like a good
solution until its time to clean-
up, and then youll see that a
ground cover like crusher fines
is much easier to keep clean
using a leaf rake. Avoid using
weed barrier under the crusher

that an inactive and sedentary
lifestyle is a sure way to trim

build in a more active lifestyle
without devoting hours each
week to working out.
Buy a step tracker that fits
with your lifestyle and is easy
for you to use. Find one with a
real-time display to motivate
you to move throughout the
day. Track your steps for a
week to get an accurate sense
of your activity level.
If you are consistently
below 3,000 steps per day,
track when and where you are
most sedentary. If it is during
the work hours, consider walk-
ing around for five minutes
every hour. And if you are able

Finding a lost pet isnt easy.
You have to rely on others to
help you reconnect. But there
are happy stories like that of
Dakota, a Siberian husky, who
wandered from her home in
New Mexico in December
2010 and was found three
months later about 1,800 miles
away in North Carolina. It was
a microchip that helped reunite
Dakota with her owner, Audra
Roberts.
Here are some ways to help
keep your pet safe and to help
find your pet if it does get lost:
Collar tags. Without
identification, 90 percent of
lost pets wont return home,
according to HomeAgain.
Make sure your pet has ID tags
on his collar that provide some
way for a person to connect
with you whether its an
address, phone number or
even email.
Microchipping. Micro-
chips are a permanent form of
identification and are essential
to help reunite you with a lost
pet. These tiny radio frequency
identification devices are
inserted under the skin and can
be scanned at animal shelters
and vet offices. Microchips
contain unique ID numbers
that link to your contact infor-
mation in a national pet reg-
istry.
Keep your contact infor-
mation current. An old home
address or telephone number
wont help you reunite with
your pet. So make sure you
update your contact informa-
tion at the vets office, with
your microchip registry and on
your pets tags.
Review your backyard
security. Dogs and cats are
excellent diggers and cats can
jump to amazing heights.
Frequently walk along the
fence line of your yard to spot
any weak links in fencing and
to make sure your dog hasnt
dug to the center of the earth
chasing an imaginary bone.
Also keep an eye on your pet
in the backyard at all times.

Whats going on in the hear-
ing aid business? Has every-
one gone crazy? It seems you
cant open a newspaper or
magazine, or even turn on the
television, without being bom-
barded with ads for the latest,
greatest, (and most expen-
sive) new hearing aids.
Everything seems to be
changing in the hearing aid
business, including prices
which are going up, says
George Bourne, a National
Board for Hearing Instrument
Sciences certified hearing aid
dispenser, and owner of
HearMart Hearing Aids, Inc.
In my opinion, there are no
hearing aids worth the outra-
geous prices some companies
charge, he continues. And if
the price doesnt scare you,
their service should.
Bourne has heard patients
horror stories about big com-
panies charging $2,000,
$3,000, $4,000 or more for a
hearing aid. If you get a price
quote that high, thank the per-
son at the company, then get
up and walk out, he says.
Getting service after spend-
ing that much money can
prove to be even worse. If
one of these big boys
charges you an arm and a leg
for a hearing device, then clos-
es up shop and leaves town,
youre stuck without service,
Bourne says.
Hearing aids are better now
than they have ever been, and
they typically cost between
$500 and $1,800. No hearing
aid is worth $5,000 or $6,000,
even if it is a tax-deductible
medical expense, he says.

For years, Kathy entertained
