Activity 1: Classroom Rule (15 minutes)

 Good morning everyone! My name is Ms. Kasper. What’s my name? You can call
me Teacher also.
 It’s so nice to meet you all finally and have a class with you!
 But before we get started I think we should talk about our classroom rules
together.
 These kind of rules will help us learn and work together without too many
problems.
 My number one rules is:
1. Have respect for yourself, others and the classroom
 What do you think this means? What does respect mean? It is a hard word to
understand, even for English speakers.
 For example, I am learning to speak Korean right now. Let’s say I make a mistake
or can’t think of a word. Then all my friends laugh at me. Do you think that is
having respect?
 If you make fun, hit, tease or be mean to other people (i.e. wongta) do you think
it is having respect?
 In Canada we have a lot of space and so we don’t usually get too close to other
people. Sometimes if too many people come to us and look at us and touch us we
feel strange. I would like to make a rule that if you think I look funny or you want
to touch me, please ask before so that I don’t feel strange. That is one way to
show me respect
 So, we must be kind to and have respect for everyone and everything. That is the
first rule: Have respect for yourself, others and the classroom
 There are some other rules that are important in a good classroom.
 Another one is that this is an English classroom. Do you think it will help you to
learn English if you speak Korean in class? Do you think it is showing respect to
me if you always speak in Korean, even though I can’t understand? (suggest the
English only rule)
 It is okay to speak in Korean sometimes. Like if you need to explain some
directions, or if you really can’t think of the word in English. But it is only okay
if you are really trying to speak English as much as possible.
 Do you think it is a good idea, do you think it is showing respect, to listen to the
teacher? If the class is not listening what could I do to get your attention? How
about? 1st - Hands on head, clapping, etc. 2nd - Turn off lights 3rd - Wait until
everyone is quiet. Why is the last one so severe? (Because learning English is
very important and if you waste time not learning it, it is the worst thing of all.)
 What if one student is misbehaving? What should the consequences be? (ex.
Strike 1= ask to stop, Strike 2=move desk, Strike 3=outside of the class/Korean
teacher deals with it)
 What should happen if you behave really well during the class? Rewards could
be;
a) Have lunch with the teacher
b) send a note home to parents about good English skills
c) free time for games, etc…
 Any other ideas or questions about these rules?
 Okay, then our rules for English class are…(read the list aloud and have the
students repeat)
 Okay, now that we have our rules ready– LET”S START LEARNING
ENGLISH!!!!!!

Activity 2: Song (5-10 minutes)

 You have been learning about these words ‘I like apples.’ Today we will learn
some more and practice some more about those words.
 First I have a song I would like to teach you. In the song it uses those words
 It goes like this: I like to eat, eat, eat apples and bananas….
 Then sometimes we sing the song a silly way. Every time there is a vowel sound
we change it to be one vowel. The first vowel in the alphabet is A. So we say ‘I
like to Ate, Ate, Ate, Apples and bAnAnAs.
 The next vowel in the alphabet is E so then we say, ‘I like to Ete, Ete, Ete,
Epples, and bEnEnEs.
 (if the students don’t understand changing the vowel sound then they can just
learn the regular song)
Activity 3: Review (5 minutes)
 Listen carefully to the CD-ROM and while looking at the picture, mark an "○" on
Minho's favorite food, but make a "×" on the food he doesn't like.
 Listen one more time and check your answers.

Activity 4: Book Activity (10 minutes)

 Now we are going to make a book about foods that we like and that we don’t
like.
 Everyone should take a piece of paper. Fold it in half and then fold it once more
so it looks like a book.
 On the front you can decorate the cover with you most favorite food! Draw a
picture with markers of your most favorite food.
 Who can tell me what they drew a picture of? What is your favorite food?
(students should answer using ‘I like ____’ form)
 My favorite food is chocolate. Do you like chocolate?
 On the next page you should draw some more picture of foods you like.
 What food do you like? Then you can draw a picture of a _______. What about
you?
 Okay, everyone finished drawing pictures of food you like? On the next page you
can draw pictures of foods you don’t like. What food don’t you like? You can
draw a picture of _______ then.
 I don’t like fish so I drew a picture of fish. Do you like fish?
 If there is extra time, students can share a sentence or two about their books.
They could also copy the word Food! On the front cover and Like/Don’t like
inside.
