(Continued) The length of straight between two bends shall be at least 4d, see figure 6. Figures 4, 5 and 6 should be used in the interpretation of bending dimensions. NOTE 1 The length equations for shape codes 14, 15, 25, 26, 27, 34, 36, and 46 are approximate and where the bend angle is greater than 45, the length should be calculated more accurately allowing for the difference between the specified overall dimensions and the true length measured along the central axis of the bar. When the bending angles approach 90, it is preferable to specify shape code 99 with a fully dimensional sketch. NOTE 2 Five bends or more might be impractical within permitted tolerances. NOTE 3 For shapes with straight and curved lengths (e.g. shape codes 12, 13, 22, 23 and 47) the largest practical mandrel size for the production of a continuous curve is 400mm. See also Clause 10.

Prefabrication
ROM offer's a complete offsite reinforcement prefabrication service that produces finished cage or mat assemblies delivered, ready for placing in position on site. The prefabricated units are designed by ROM in conjunction with the customer to ensure compatibility on site. Assemblies can be Mig welded or wire tied with additional reinforcement if required to ensure that the integrity of the assembly is maintained during transportation and placing on site.
Quality Assurance
All ROM prefabrication facilities, materials and welder's are fully CARES approved. Our facilities, materials and operatives are independantly audited on a regular basis to ensure the correct procedures are complied with.
Key Benefits
Removes steel fixing from the critical path. Continuity of manufacture regardless of weather conditions. Costly site fixing becomes cost effective placing of prefabricated units. Improved safety from reductions in movement of loose bar. Assemblies supplied with labels and location plan for ease of identification.

Lenton Couplers
Product Line
The most widely used mechanical splicing system in the world. With experience of over 30 years, LENTON products provide a complete line of full tension and compression mechanical splices. LENTON couplers are the slimmest couplers on the market for tension and compression.
Couplers - A12
LENTON standard couplers are designed to splice the the same diameter bars where one bar can be rotated and is not restricted in its axial direction.
The Positional style coupler P14 can Position be used when neither bar can be Couplers - P14 rotated and when the ongoing bar is free to move in its axial direction. If the ongoing bar is restricted in its axial direction then a P13 type coupler is required. Contact your nearest ROM depot for detailed information.
Transition couplers are designed to splice different diameter bars where one bar can be rotated and is not restricted in its axial direction
For a full range of couplers please contact your local depot, please turn to pages 34-35.

Ancon Couplers
The benefits of using reinforcing bar couplers to accelerate the speed of construction, increase productivity and simplify the design of reinforced concrete are widely recognised. The Ancon range includes tapered, threaded and mechanically bolted couplers.
Ancon Tapered Thread Standard couplers are designed to suit the majority of applications which call for the joining of reinforcing bars. The couplers are normally supplied fitted to the end of threaded bar, requiring only the engagement and tightening of the adjoining bar on site. Ancon specifies the use of a torque wrench in order to achieve correct and consistent installation.
The Ancon Tapered Thread Positional coupler is designed to be used in applications in which neither bar can be rotated. Having a degree of adjustability, the Positional coupler can also be used as a closer between two fixed bars. The couplers are normally supplied fitted to the end of threaded bar, requiring only the engagement and tightening of the adjoining bar on site. In order to ensure correct and consistent installation, Ancon Building Products specifies the use of a torque wrench.
The Ancon Tapered Thread Transition coupler connects reinforcing bars of different diameters. The coupler comprises an internally threaded sleeve with two right hand threads both of which are tapered towards the middle of the coupler. The diameter of each thread corresponds to the appropriate bar size. The couplers are normally supplied fitted to the end of threaded bar, requiring only the engagement and tightening of the adjoining bar on site. In order to ensure correct and consistent installation, Ancon Building Products specifies the use of a torque wrench.

Reinforcement Connection
The Startabox System is a quick and safe way of achieving high quality reinforcement connections in a structural concrete joint without formwork damage. It consists of specially selected high yield reinforcement steel conforming to BS4449 housed in a perforated case with a tear-off plastic cover which protects the reinforcement until it is required for use.
Speed Startabox is quickly nailed into the formwork. There is no need for time-consuming drilling and cutting of the formwork. The formwork can be easily struck and re-erected thereby reducing intervals between pours. Safe The steel starter bars are housed within their case until ready for use. There are no protruding bars which may corrode or become damaged and present a hazard to workmen. Cost The formwork suffers no damage and therefore may be re-used many times. This contrasts with
normal stop-ends which only offer one use. is nailed to plain formwork and does not suffer the same problem. This means that Startabox will deliver a high quality construction joint every time.
Quality Traditional stop-ends offer suffer grout loss. Startabox Site Take off and scheduling service available
Case Sizes
N.B. The Type 11 case with 16mm bars is produced with single bars only. Cases containing 8,10 and 12mm bars supplied 30mm deep. Cases containing 16mm bar supplied 50mm deep with steel lids for greater rigidity.
Re-bending tools available from stock. 8-10mm bar, order re-bending tool 1. For 12 to 16mm bar, order re-bending tool 2.

Curved STARTABOX STARTABOX can be manufactured to a customers desired internal or external radius. A typical situation would be the use of STARTABOX in the construction of launder channels in round tanks in the water treatment industry. STARTABOX with Integral Waterstop (STARTASTOP) STARTABOX can be manufactured incorporating a hydrophilic waterstop strip on both the internal and external face of the casing. This is especially useful for construction joints in below ground situations or within water retaining structures. The hydrophilic strip used is passed for use in potable water situations. STARTABOX Coupler Combinations Where reinforcement bar diameters or congestion of reinforcement bar restricts the use of STARTABOX, RFA manufacture and supply a reinforcement bar coupler system. RFA can detail these couplers in conjunction with STARTABOX and can even include them in the same joint detail. STARTABOX Cross Wall Connection Where two walls bisect each other STARTABOX can be manufactured to accommodate the pull out bars for both faces of a wall in one single strip. This ensures the reinforcement runs continuously through the bisecting wall.

The standard two metre long Continuous Dekchairs are particularly suitable for ground floor slabs as their unique design eliminates any danger of puncturing damp proof membranes. Dekchair spacers can also be used between layers of reinforcement in suspended slabs and vertically in walls
Ring Spacers
The circular Spacers provide a quick, easy and economical method of supporting reinforcement in concrete slabs. The spacers are delivered in 3.0 metre long straight lengths, which can then be formed into a circle of 1.0 metre diameter. Recommended a minimum of 4 per sheet.

Steel Kickers
Steel Kickers are used in kickerless construction of walls eliminating the need for a concrete kicker and saving time in the construction cycle. The pressed steel leg of the T shaped kicker is simply pushed into the wet concrete slab along the appropriate centre line of the proposed wall. Once set in position the adjustable horizontal bar forming the T can be moved from side to side until the correct position is obtained. Once positioned, the horizontal bar can be tapped with a hammer to wedge it into the vertical slots on the leg.
