Chemical Reaction Engineering II- BKF 3472 2011/12 Sem I Unit Operation I- BKF 3463 Integrated Project Overview

The design project is structured to comprise 4 subtasks and a final report, each to be completed at approximately 2-week intervals throughout the semester. The project will conclude with an oral presentation and individual interview. You will work together in your homework teams, each team on a slightly different problem. The design project will contribute 20% to your final grade. 1.0 Project Description 1.1The project objective is to design a reactor and a separator for the production of either: a) Propylene through propane dehydrogenation b) Cyclohexanone through phenol hydrogenation c) Cumene through the benzene alkylation by propylene d) 2-ethylhexyl laureate through the esterification of 2-ethylhexanol with lauric acid While various technologies have been practiced for these reactions, fixed bed reactor technology will be focus of your design for this project. 1.2The project work will involve few subtasks, these including a) A review of the literature background on the product and production technologies, and for reaction kinetics for your system. b) Your initial reactor design will be for a reactor using heterogeneous reaction kinetics such as Eley Riedel (ER) model and Langmuir Hinshelwood Hougen Watson (LHHW) model. You need to consider the energy balances and the main reaction during the initial design. c) As we proceed through the semester, you will add in more complex chemistry to describe competing reactions and the effect of external and internal diffusions to your reactor design. d) The design of evaporation, distillation or extraction systems will be facilitated. 1.3You will perform reaction and separation systems analysis and sizing using hand calculations or POLYMATH. Detailed expectations will be outlined in individual instructions for each subtask if necessary. 2.0 Resources for Your Project 2.1Journal Articles Many of the journal articles that you will need for this project can be obtained online from the Library. You need to locate reference for your reaction immediately so that you can meet the first deadline. Online journal can be found: From the library website: http://iportal.ump.edu.my/ under E-Resources (at the bottom). The username is your student number while the password is your IC number. Or directly for the most journals (If you use the internet access of UMP): o Science Direct (Elservier Journals) http://www.sciencedirect.com/ such as Chemical Engineering Science, Applied Catalysis A: General and Applied Catalysis B: Environmental

2.2Patents Patents will not provide specific process information (or kinetics) for design; however, they contain very useful section on the Review of the Current Art which will help provide additional prospective for your process background. To search and access issued patents in the U.S. online, you may visit the following site: http://www.uspto.gov or other relevant website. 2.3Reference Books:
