Introduction

As a hub for trade, the Middle East & UAEs Aviation Logistics sector plays a vital role in the economy. Integrating the regions Logistics & aviation sector, with sustainable development best practices is imperative to drive further efficiencies and will generate stronger demand for the Logistcs Sector. Road congestion, urban mobility, local air pollution and the need for CO2 reductions and energy conservation will have a dramatic impact on the future supply chain of all industries. Companies will be forced to reduce the impact on the environment of their supply chains and will have to develop sustainable supply chain strategies in the coming months and years. Realising environmental objectives can be done in synergy with other strategic and financial goals. A green logistics or Green Aviation policy

often reduces logistics costs as it focuses on reducing energy use and on improving the total supply chain. Whatever the effect on costs, it is obvious that environmental performance indicators, the adoption of a green logistics policy and effective green supply chains measures will become important aspects of total supply chain management in the near future. Shippers and retailers as well as transport companies, logistics service providers, airlines, airport and port operators will have to integrate environmental values into their decision making processes. A well-informed emission reduction strategy will have to be developed by companies to meet future requirements. The Green Aviation Logistics Group Middle East (GALG ME) will be an international collaborative

network of supply chain/ aviation specialists consultants with a general or specific expertise in areas where companies or local and national governments can improve the cost and environmental performance of their supply chains and transport infrastructure. Green Aviation & Logistics Group Middle East member companies, authorities, governments and international organisations through their interactions, will help develop a green logistics policy or sustainable supply chain and to realise an energy- and eco-efficient supply chain and transport infrastructure.. The Department of Economic Development (DED) has led the initiative to transform a critical Dnata Cargo site the FreightGate-5 airport cargo terminal to develop the first carbon neutral warehouse in the Middle East. This will serve as a template for green warehousing across Dubai that, according to the estimates made during the study, can save 1.9 million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually by 2020, equivalent to the current annual carbon footprint of some 60,000 UAE residents. The path-breaking initiative is part of the agreement signed between the DED and DHL last year to develop logistics innovation initiatives that drive efficiencies within the logistics sector through better policy management. The carbon reduction initiative is one of the key work streams that is part of the longer City Logistics agreement inked by the two organisations.
