The Park at Sixth receives statewide recognition


The Griffin Main Street Program recently received a $1,000.00 prize and was honored at the 2011 Georgia Downtown Conference at its annual Downtown Excellence Awards Banquet. The Park at Sixth won the Outstanding New Construction / Infill Award. This honor is presented to a project that is sensitively designed and implemented to bring new activity to a vacant lot, brownfield site, or an addition to an existing structure that increases a downtowns vitality, said Kira Harris-Braggs, Griffin Main Street Program Manager. With the completion of Phases I and II of The Park at Sixth, we have already been able to host a Doctober Days event, June Jam 2011, and several of the Downtown Free Movie Series showings bringing hundreds of people back downtown. We are now looking forward to finishing the Park with the addition of the J. William Edwards Pavilion, that is scheduled for completion by December 2011. The Griffin Main Street Program has created a catalyst in Downtown Griffin, said Daaood Amin, Griffin Main Street Advisory Board Chairman. Yard Waste Collection Dos and Donts


The fall leaf season is approaching. We have included a few reminders about your yard waste pickup: Only limbs, leaves, and grass clippings may be placed at the curb for general collection. Limbs placed at the curb should be in lengths no longer than 4 feet and no larger than 6 inches in diameter For everyones safety, please DO NOT place yard waste next to utility poles/wires, fire hydrants, mail boxes, or visually obstruct any motorist. Rocks, dirt, stumps, concrete, wood, carpet, wire, furniture, tires, and similar items are not acceptable curbside materials. Piles larger than the size of a standard F-250 pick-up truck bed will require arrangements for a Special Handling please contact the Solid Waste Division prior to the debris being placed out on the right of way (770-229-6421). Yard Waste removal is not scheduled for commercial or industrial customers. Small businesses can make arrangements for yard waste pick-up by contacting Solid Waste at the above number. Residents of the City of Griffin may take yard waste and debris to the Shoal Creek Landfill at 575 Shoal Creek Road (770-228-0430) free of charge.

other communities across the state that creative use of underutilized spaces can bring life into a downtown area. Weve hosted events in the Park at Sixth and on any given day you can find people utilizing the park as a place to eat their lunch, meet friends, or just relax. It is an asset that will remain a downtown focal point for years to come. This is the type of positive thing that happens when private-public partnerships are created to work toward a common community goal, said Gwen Flowers-Taylor, Spalding County Commissioner. The City of Griffin was also nominated for an award in the Best Downtown Event category for June Jam 2011, an annual street dance hosted in Griffins Historic Downtown, and The Tiger Lily, a thirty-two year old Griffin-based business was also nominated for Best Anchor Retail Store in a Downtown.

Congratulations to Jean Phillips, August 2011 Strongest Link in the Chain. She was hired last year as the new Cogsdale Agent under the electric department. Her main goal is to keep our billing system stable, accounts correct and to audit customer information. This has proven to be a full time position in itself. She also provides support to the Customer Service department on special investigations, public works on water and related items and a host of cogsdale related items as we move into AMI, AMR, outsourcing and online projects come to the forefront. She also helps in the development of reports etc. She has recovered almost $500,000 dollars in lost revenue through audits and continues to improve the quality of information we have on record. Some of this information had been incorrect since before banner. This information has also resulted in some refunds to customers. She is an asset to the depart and to the city. The City of Griffin is proud to have Jean Phillips as the August Strongest Link in the Chain. Congratulations to John Jefferson, an Operator III Commercial Driver, as September 2011 Strongest Link in the Chain. Almost a 6-year veteran of the City of Griffin, Mr. Jefferson serves more than 200 commercial customers with their solid waste and recycling needs, working in a 20-mile radius in and around the City of Griffin, Spalding, Pike and Butts Counties and moving an average of 100 tons in a given week. In addition to servicing our current customers, Mr. Jefferson also assists with individual requests for rental roll-off boxes for their construction and demolition, roofing or debris clearing needs, ensuring timely delivery and prompt removal and replacement whenever a customer calls to request assistance. Mr. Jefferson maintains the highest standards of professionalism, and is known for being courteous, innovative, patient and excellent in building rapport and understanding with the Commercial customers. His dependability and outstanding service make him an asset to our team, and the City of Griffin is honored to announce he is the September Strongest Link in the Chain.

The City of Griffin offices will be closed on the following days: Thursday, November 24, 2011 Friday, November 25, 2011 Friday, December 23, 2011 Monday, December 26, 2011 Monday, January 2, 2012 City Hall and any other city buildings will not be open for the public.
