"The Youngest College in MSU: In Progress"

By Jimima E. Bao

This College is located between Princess Lawanan Hall and Rajah

Idarapatra Hall, beside the University Book Center. It is said to be the College
where world of modern technology exists. It is well-known being the youngest
college in MSU - Main Campus. Some might tell you that this is a "Baby
College ". This is no other than the CIT (College Of Information
Technology). But, are we just contented hearing and saying these
humble statements not knowing the reason behind them? So, fasten
your seat belts because this will be a quite long journey as I tour
you to the day CIT was started.

CIT before did not start as already a college. In truth,

it used to share with the building of CNSM (College of Natural
Science and Mathematics) offering a degree program in computer
science called BS. Math-Comsci but due to lack of instructor, degree
program was discontinued for a while and students cross-enrolled in
MSU-IIT to complete the course. By June 1993, students were accepted
at the beginning of school year. They were required to attend the
two exams; one is for the interest exam and the other one is the
intelligence exam. What happen before prove that the saying "habang
may buhay may pag-asa" is true. Because, on December 8,1993, the
Department reactivation made possible and was headed by Prof.
Catherine P. Ballesil, the Dean that time, Ms. Janice C. Wade, the
chair person and the Mr. Renato V. Crisostomo as pioneering faculty
members. Mr. Peter T. Miranda, the computer technician of the CNSM's
computer laboratory later joined them. And by June 1999, the
department has already nine (9) faculty members.

In 1996, the department produces its first batched of

graduates. Actually, Mr. Crisostomo was one of the graduates of the
earlier discontinued degree offering. CIT really increased the
quality standard even before, as a matter of fact; it was recognized
and granted Center of Development for Excellence (CODE) status by
CHED in Information Technology Education during A.Y 2000-2001. An
Internet Center was also established for a simple reason that is to
provide Internet Access to MSU's constituent and whose operation was
directly under the office of the President. It was first headed by
Dr. Peter K. Ababa. These developments took place during the
Administration of President Emily M. Marohombsar.

That time Senator Ramon Magsaysay Jr. passed the E-

commerce Law authorizing every agency of the government to used 10
percent of its MOOE for the development of its own Information and
Communication Technology Unit. Apparently, to expand and upgrade
Information Technology facilities was highly needed. Few years
later, EVP Dr. Datumanong A. Sarangani was designated by President
Umpa, after he took over the managing of the University. Dr.
Sarangani awes tasked to chair MSU's Information and Communication
Technology Committee (ICT); to over see and give more attention to
IT growth and expansion in MSU-main campus. With the join forces of
Dr. Sarangani and Ms. Janice Fortuna, who led the proposal of the
Computer Science Department in developing programs for data banking
of all important records, files and document of the University was
considered and given attention.

Mr. Brian Dominic G. Paradero headed the EDP (Electronic

Data Processing) section which was formally created on April 2001,
It began creating software not only for the university's use and
need but also for its sister school like MSU-Naawan. The task to
supervise the ICT Committee was handed over to Vice President Yusoph
Latip due to the new responsibilities and higher concerns given to
EVP Sarangani. With their serious, concerned and like minded
leadership, the MSU-InfoTech Center was formally established. It was
mandated to :( 1) process electronic data banking;(2)provide
Internet Services in the campus for MSU constituent and (3) provide
maintenance support and training. To carry out its mandate three (3)
departments were created. These are: The Electronic Data Processing
Department with Mr. Brian Dominic G. Paradero as the Department
chief; the Internet Service Department of which Dr. Asibal himself
became the concurrent supervising head; and the Maintenance and
Support Service Department led by Mr. Peter T. Miranda. Dr. Asibal's
term as Director was cut short in view of his research projects and
other activities. Dr. Pepe L. Madrid, who cane from Civil
Engineering Department took over his place as Director starting May
15, 2003

The InfoTech and the Computer Science Department, which

are two units of the University was identified as being devoted to
one disciplined. If President Ricardo F. De Leon has 10 imperatives,
Dr. Camar A. Umpa before has 2 agenda; one is peace education and
other one is Information Technology. In June 2003, He issued a
special order creating an Ad Hoc Committee that was tasked to study
and evaluates its restructuring. The Committee was headed by the
newly appointed director of InfoTech, Dr. Pepe L. Madrid, called for
planning workshop on July 04, 2003 which came up with proposal for
the establishment of SIT (School of Information Technology) and was
approved by the Board of Regent last August 2003. Recently, Computer
Science Department has granted temporary authority to offer Bachelor
of Science and Information Technology (BSIT) by the OVPAA. BSIT has
two (2) majors: Business Software Development and Management
Information System. This authority was granted last April 21, 2004.
On April 07, 2004, the University President, Dr. Camar
A. Umpa , issued a special order declaring the official merge of the
Department of Computer Science and MSU InfoTech Center , it took
effect on May 01. The SIT should be considered in all respect as a
college or degree granting unit under the supervision of the Vice
Chancellor for Academic Affair of the main campus. As approved and
duly amended by the Board of Regents (Resolution No.19 series of
2005),the School Of Information Technology later became collegiate
unit and named as College of Information Technology headed by Dean,
College Secretary and its unit structure. It became a separate
college which consist of four department such as: CSD(Computer
Science Department),ISD (Information System Department),SST(Support
Services and Training Department) and ISC ( Internet Services
Center ).

CIT really prove itself as time and years go by. If

before, It had rooms that were scattered in CNSM building, which
some were mixed with the rooms for Math and Physics building, one at
the Chemistry and biology building while the two rooms were at CIT
itself. Now, with the help of the very kind-hearted President
Ricardo f. De Leon, the CIT was given a new annex building which is
located besides the CIT building. It has one spacious laboratory
room and two lecture rooms. The old MSRC office was given also to
the CIT which has one laboratory room and two lecture rooms. In
total CIT has now three (3) laboratory rooms including the old
laboratory with more than 100 computers for the student benefit. The
new laboratory has endowed with lots of state-of-the-art features
as; one Gigabytes of RAM, wireless connection , wireless-g courtier,
LCD monitor, etc

The knowledge and Information do not just depend in

computer service. Most of the times factual data's and books are
more helpful that's why the need of unit library is arising. As CIT
respond to the said student's problem, the used to be the lecture
room transformed into the new library. Although there is no
librarian to cater the student and faculty needs and the computers
are not functioning yet for some valid reasons but there still some
materials, new books and old computers are made available for
anyone's researching purposes. This library is decorated by some
robots and hanging chandelier with a logo out from recycled
Styrofoam made by some resourceful CIT students to entertain and
make the students and faculty not to be bored.
We can really say that CIT is now a Progressing college as
it should be. It just like a growing child that is thirsty and
hungry for knowledge and has Vision, mission and objectives to
fulfill;

CIT VISION:
The College envisions to be the leading, innovative,
entrepreneurial knowledge, and IT hub in the MINSUPALA region and
the rest of the world.

All the progressing thing in life are not mean to last.
Things are not permanent and not impossible to change but life is a
matter of choice, how you choose thing over the thousand choices and
how you enhance them will depend on your hands. I think we should
stop this discussion with a hope that the future people who will
handle the youngest college will make it even more progressive.
