Blood transfusion is an essential component of
modern medicine.
Saves tens and thousands of lives everyday .
In a country like India, for safe blood transfusion ,
the only way open is switching over to total voluntary
blood donation programme.
Safe blood starts with me; blood saves lives was the
slogan of World Health Day 2000.
no substitute …cannot be manufactured

The overall estimated annual requirement of blood to be 6 million

units in India. Only 3 million units of blood were reported to be
collected from professional, voluntary and replacement donors. Of
this, 1.2 million units were collected from paid professional donors.
The estimated shortfall of three million units will go up to 4.2
million units annually.

WHY COLLEGE STUDENTS

Youth are healthy, active, dynamic, receptive and constitute a
greater proportion of population. A healthy attitude among college
students will bring change as they are the backbone of the country.
They have to be encouraged, inspired and motivated to donate
blood voluntarily.
!
Will a health education program consisting of
charts and displays among first year
engineering students of PSG Technology
improve their knowledge , attitude and
practice regarding voluntary blood donation ?

Assessment of knowledge, attitude and practice of

college students regarding blood donation voluntarily.
Education to college students regarding voluntary
blood donation.
Reassessment of college students knowledge attitude
and practice on voluntary blood donation.
! "

Literature review was done by referring books,

journals and internet.

A study on knowledge and attitude towards voluntary blood

donation among Dhaka university students in Bangladesh
shows physical harm, fear and inadequate knowledge were
found to be the common reasons for not donating blood.

This study suggested for appropriate motivational activities to

be launched immediately among the younger section of
population to convert this favorable attitude towards blood
donation into a regular practice in order to increase voluntary
blood donation

A study which was conducted in S.N.R college of arts and science CBE,
showed that education can improve the knowledge of voluntary blood
donation among youth by 32% and the practice of blood donation by
40%( Sudha Rani -2000)

Similarly another study conducted in Loyola college, Chennai showed

that knowledge improved by 25% and the practice of voluntary blood
donation by 35%

In this study it was found that education among P.S.G college of

technology CBE has improved the knowledge of voluntary blood
donation by 40% and the practice of voluntary blood donation in a
BLOOD DONATION CAMP conducted by us is 50.9%

Limitations and recommendations

Blood is a living matter which can be transfused to save lives. Serious
loss of blood due to an accident or disease can cause shock or even
death (WHO, 2000). An increased awareness among the public that
blood donation is a safe process and also about the need for blood
donation will increase the regular voluntary blood donations in the
country.
Education had an important role in the promotion of voluntary blood donation
among youth. Through education we can develop adequate knowledge, positive
attitude and appropriate practice among youth towards voluntary blood
donation. This will leads to safe and adequate blood supply throughout our
country.
