1. (a) What is courtesy? (2 marks)
Courtesy is a kind of behaviour which is polite and kind, and shows respects
and consideration for other people. (Up to 2 marks)

(b) How should courtesy be important to Christians? (10 marks)


Courtesy should be important to Christians because
 they believe that God created all people in his image and all should be
given consideration and respect
 they believe that God create all people equal, and therefore they should
create all people well
 they believe that Jesus died for all people, therefore they should love to
all
 they ought to be like their Father in heaven who is kind to all
 Jesus was humble and served others and Christians should try to follow
his example
 failure in courtesy shows lack of love, and Christians should love
others
 failure in courtesy shows lack of respect and that is pride. Christians
should not be proud
 rude behaviour is selfish behaviour and Christians should follow Jesus’
example and put others first
 they are urged to forgive others as the Father has forgiven them
Or any other valid point with a biblical basis

(c) What is the role of courtesy in family AND social relationship? (6 marks)
They role of courtesy in family relationship
 parents and children should respect one another recognizing each
other’s value and giving a sense of worth
 brothers and sisters should be courtesy and help one another and all
will be benefited and a spirit of co-operation will result
 helping family members to build up a harmonious relationship and
minimize possible fights

The role of courtesy in social relationship
 courtesy between employers and employees shows mutual respect and
encourage co-operation
 courtesy among colleagues helps people to appreciate each other’s
worth / strengths and produces good working relationships
 courtesy among strangers, e.g. in shops and on public transport, shows
a recognition of the value of each individual and produces a healthy,
caring society

(d) Mention TWO areas of life in Hong Kong where you think courtesy could
be improved (2 marks)
Areas where courtesy could be improved
 offering seats on buses etc. to the elderly, to pregnant women, to
mothers with babies
 waiting patiently for one’s turn to be served, instead of pushing in front
of others
 waiting to let people off the MTR train before pushing in

2. (a) Name TWO kinds of serious family problems common in Hong Kong in
recent years. What do you think are the main reasons for these problems?
(8 marks)
Serious family problems common in Hong Kong are:
 divorce
 extra-marital affairs
 abandoning babies
 child abuse
 child neglect
 neglect of the old
 etc.
(1 mark each, up to 2 marks)
Main reasons such as:
 the breakdown of family relationships, especially between husband and
wife
 both parents need to work; they do not have much time to look after
the family. They usually blame each other when problems arise
 earning a living is very difficult today; working parents are under
much pressure from their work and society. They have no outlet for
their frustrations except their own family
 the rise of the nuclear family; the new couple usually live apart from
their parents, thus lacking immediate help/support from them when
problems arise
 living space is limited; not enough space for the old people; especially
those really old and needing to be take care of. They are though of as
burdens to a nuclear family
 the impact of the mass-media which gives the impression that
permissiveness is acceptable
 the impact of the mass-media which creates unreasonable expectations
 a single mother may abandon a baby because she cannot face the
pressure/responsibility of caring for it alone
 television and/or long working hours interrupt family life so that there
is little communication. A person who cannot speak of his/her

problems may feel driven to suicide

(b) What does the Bible teach about relationship between husband and wife,
and parents and children? (12 marks)
Relationship between husband and wife (cf. Eph.5:21-33)
 husbands should love their wives just as they love their own
bodies/just as Christ loved the Church
 wives should respect their husbands, and submit to them as they
submit to the Lord
 in marriage, the two become one flesh, so this means an exclusive
relationship
 God’s ideal for marriage is that it is permanent, therefore no divorce
(Matthew 5:31-32)
Relationship between parents and children (cf.Eph.6:1-4)
 children should obey their parents, and honour/respect your parents is
the commandment
 parents should not treat their children in such a way as to make them
angry
 parents should bring them up with Christian discipline and instruction
Or should teach their children to love God
 parents should love and provide for their children (Mt 5:9-13)
 children have no excuse to neglect helping their father and mother
(Mark 7:11-13)

3. A survey in 1983 showed that many young people bought pornographic


magazines because they wanted information about sex.
(a) What are the dangers of learning about sex through pornography? (8
marks)
The dangers of learning about sex through pornography are that
pornography
 encourages the idea that sex is only for physical pleasure
 encourages a selfish attitude to sex
 treats people as objects to be used
 propagates a distorted view of sex
 suggests that sex can be separated from love/marriage
 often links sex with violence either creating fear or increasing violent
tendencies
 may create lust in young people not yet ready for a committed
relationship
 suggests that sex is shameful and unclean

(b) Who, in your opinion, should be responsibility for providing sex education?

(c) What do you think Christian parents would want their children to learn
about sex? (8 marks)
What Christian parents would want their children to learn about sex
 Sex is not shameful or unclean but is a gift from God
Or Sex is good/sacred
 God intends it to be used in an exclusive marriage relationship
Or Adultery is forbidden
 Sex is an act of love and sharing which brings mutual pleasure
 Sex is a means of strengthening the marriage bond
 Sex is the means by which God given children and they should be
brought up in a loving family circle
 Sex should be used unselfishly with consideration for the needs of the
husband/wife
 Because God intends sex to be used to deepen a committed
relationship, its use outside of marriage cannot bring true satisfaction
 Because sex is God’s gift, its use in any way other than the way God
intended is sin

4. In many families, school children spend long hours alone every day or in the care
of governess because both parents are working.
(a) What are the advantages AND disadvantages of this kind of lifestyle? (10
marks)
The advantages are
 when both parents work, the family can have a higher standard of
living OR in some cases. If both parents don’t work they are not able
to meet the need of family
 there is money available for education

 sometimes families can afford to travel overseas and so broaden the


knowledge of the children
 the children learn to be independent
 the parents find life more interesting and are better able to spend the
time with children even though it may be limited
The disadvantages are
 the family may grow apart because of lack of communication
 the children may not get enough guidance from their parents OR there
is insufficient time together for the children to share their problems or
get help with their homework
 children may spend long hours watching TV and become cut off from
real life
 the children may come under bad influence that the parents don’t know
about
 total development of the children may be hindered through lack of
proper parental care
 the children may have emotional problems because they feel unique
 the children may have personality problems because of lack of parental
care
