2. (a) (i) Why Jesus told people not to be anxious about possessions
- your heavenly Father knows your needs/takes care of you
- you don't have to be like the heathen/people who don't know God
- there is a great reward prepared for you in the future
- if you put the Kingdom of God first in your life. God will provide for
you
- God doesn’t want you to worry, worrying doesn't help
- ask God for your needs/God wants you to ask Him
- money can be like a master/enslaves you/takes away at the same time
- riches may be destroyed (Note: Do not credit this point twice)

(ii) What Jesus told people to do with their possessions
- give to the needy
- give help to others, not to attract attention to yourself
- give in response to those who ask
- lend to those who want to borrow (any 3 x 1 mark)

(b) (i) Why Jesus said it would be hard for rich people to enter the Kingdom
of God
- rich man had come to see Jesus who asked about eternal life
- he had kept the commandments but there was still something missing
- he didn’t want to give away his money when Jesus told him to
- he was close to the Kingdom but his love of money prevented him
from following Jesus (any 3 x 1 mark)
(ii) Jesus meant
- that many rich people put their possessions first before God's will/are

controlled by money
- we must be prepared to leave everything to follow Jesus
- rich people can enter the Kingdom of God but they will find it hard
- in the future rich people would find the same problem as this rich man,
if their love of money comes before their love of God

- they could easily give away some of the money/they gave what they
didn't need/what they had to spare

(d) What Jesus promised his followers

3. (a) the Scriptures were familiar to Jewish men


- the Scriptures were important because they contained their law
- their hope of Messiah was based on the prophets’ prophecies
- males learned to read and write using the Scriptures/were taught
Scriptures from childhood
- they heard the Scriptures every Sabbath in the synagogue
- they took turns to read the Scriptures in the synagogue
- there was a custom of discussing the Scriptures
- or any other valid answer (Any 2 x 2 marks)

(b) Jesus attitude to the Scriptures


- Scriptures were important to Jesus because he referred to them often
- or Jesus knew the Scriptures well, he often quoted them
- the Scriptures were not just to be understood but to be carried out in
daily life
- he was able to explain the Scriptures - e.g. as a boy in the Temple;
when he was with his disciples; teaching in the Temple.
- Jesus treated the Scriptures as true/God's word
- Jesus expected the prophecies to be fulfilled/that God would fulfil the
prophecies
- his teaching was based on the Scriptures - e.g. he said that he had come
to fulfill the Law

(c) Fulfillment of the Old Testament in the life of Jesus


- Matthew 1:23 "the virgin will conceive" - Mary was a virgin
- Matthew 2:5 “You, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah.” - Jesus was born
in Bethlehem
- Matthew 2:15b "I called my son out of Egypt" Jesus-went to Egypt
before returning to Nazareth
- Matthew 2:18 “A sound is heard in Ramah.” - the killing of the
children near Bethlehem
- Matthew 2:23 "He will be called a Nazarene." - Jesus came from
Nazareth
- Mark 1:2 "Here is my messenger" - John the Baptist prepared the way
for Jesus
- Mark 4:12 "They may look and look and not see" - Many people hear
and see Jesus but not all respond
- Mark 7:6 “These people honor me with their lips” Isaiah prophesied
that the Jews would be hypocrites/be far away from God and it was
true
- Mark 9:12 "It is written that the Son of Man must suffer." - Jesus' s
suffering and rejection is predicted
- Mark 11 - Riding into Jerusalem & Shouts of Hosanna fulfill prophecy
- Mark 11:17 “My house will be called a house of prayer” – Jesus
cleanses the Temple to make the words come true
- Mark 12:10 “The stone which the builders rejected.” – Jesus is rejected
but is made Lord by God
- Mark 14:21 - The Son of Man will die as the Scriptures say he will
- Mark 14:24 - New Covenant which referred by Jeremiah - Jesus makes
a new covenant
- Mark 14:27 'God will kill the shepherd and the sheep will be scattered'
- Jesus killed, disciples ran away
- Mark 15:28 - In this way the scripture came true which says, "He was
included with the criminals" - Jesus hung between two thieves

- the Bible is used in public worship
- the Bible is the basis of Christian faith

4. (a) Why did Jesus use pictorial language and stories to explain his teaching?

(b) Mention FOUR things well-known in Jesus' time and show how he used
them to make his teaching clearer. (8 marks)
(c) (i) What story did Jesus tell to explain obedience? (2 marks)
(ii) What story did Jesus tell to explain God's judgment on Israel? (2 marks)

(d) Which of Jesus' parables do you think would be most meaningful to Hong
Kong people today? Explain your answer. (4 marks)

4. (a) Why Jesus used pictorial language and stories to explain his teaching
- stories attracted more listeners
- most of his listeners were not used to abstract thought/not
intellectual/stories were easier for them to understood
- Jewish people love stories/stories were very popular
- made his teaching lively and realistic/gave practical examples
- stories attracted listeners because they were about their world
- this is a good teaching method
- stories are less offensive than direct teaching (any 2 x 2 marks)

(b) well-known things used by Jesus in his teaching


- Patches - in the same way as new cloth is only used to patch a new coat so
Jesus' new teaching needs a new way of behaving
- Wineskins - just as new wine has to be put into new skins (for old skins
would burst' so Jesus' new teaching is like new wine and needs a new way
of living
- seeds - like seeds which are sown on different soils so the word of God is
received in a variety of ways
- seeds - grow secretly and determinedly (without a man knowing how) so
God's Kingdom will grow
- lamp - just as a lamp is put on a stand so that it can give light to all, so
should Jesus' disciples be making a clear witness
- mustard seed - just as the small mustard seed grown to a big tree so will
God's Kingdom grow from a small beginning
- also: - a house, yeast, a vineyard, salt, a city on a hill, wild flowers, grass,
birds, a tree and its fruit....etc

(c) (i) Obedience - Jesus told a story about two men who both build a house.
The man who built his house on the rock, even when storms and floods
came, the house did not fall. This man is like a man who hears God's
words and obeys them.
Note: Material not in the syllabus may be credited if correct. e.g. Parable
of the Two Sons. (up to 2
marks)
(ii) God's judgment on Israel - Jesus told a story about a vineyard whose
owner rented it out to tenants. The tenants refused to give the owner his
rightful share and killed his slaves and even his son. The vineyard
tenants are like Israel. God will destroy them. (up to 2 marks)

5. "It was now two days before the Feast of the Passover and Unleavened Bread.
The chief priests and teachers of the law were looking for a way to arrest Jesus
secretly and put him to death". (Mark 14:1)
(a) Why was it significant that Jesus was killed at this time of year? (4 marks)
(b) (i) Why were the chief priests and teachers of the law eager to kill Jesus?
Mention FOUR incidents to explain your answer. (8 marks)
(ii) Why did they want to arrest Jesus secretly? (2 marks)
(c) What did the disciples do on the night of Jesus’ arrest? Suggest reasons for
their behaviour. (6 marks)

5. (a) Significance of the time of year that Jesus was killed


- at the Feast of the Passover a lamb was sacrificed - Jesus was pure (like a
lamb) and was killed
- at this time there was an important family meal - Jesus ate with his
disciples before he vent out and was killed
- the Passover remembers the Exodus from slavery in Egypt - Jesus leads
people out of the slavery of sin and death (any 2 x 2 marks)

(b) (i) The chief priests etc. wanted to kill Jesus because:
(Numerous possible incidents)
- the healing of the paralysed man- caused offence to teachers of the Law
because Jesus said that his sins were forgiven and only God could forgive
sins
- the healing of man with the crippled hand on the Sabbath Day caused
offence because work was forbidden on the Sabbath Day (Mark 3:6)
- after Jesus told the Parable of the Vineyard accused the Jews of rejecting
God’s chosen ones
- Jesus criticised the teachers of the Law for wearing long robes, and
reserving the best places in the synagogue (Mark 12)

- the Pharisees and teachers of the Law had laid traps for Jesus which didn't
succeed make them angry

(ii) They wanted to arrest Jesus secretly because:


- they were afraid of the ordinary people/of a riot
- the ordinary people supported Jesus/liked his teaching
- they feared they would harm their own position/lose popularity
- because they had no good reasons to do so (any 1 x 2 marks)

(c) Reason for the disciples’ behaviour on the night of Jesus' arrest
- in the Garden of Gethsemane, Peter, James and John slept instead of
supporting Jesus
because they were tired
or because they didn't really understand what was happening
- Judas went to the teachers of the Law and told them where Jesus could be
found/betrayed Jesus
because he was greedy for money/covetous
or because he was disappointed that Jesus was not an earthly King/political
Messiah
- Judas showed who Jesus was by kissing him
because he didn't want to alert the other disciples
or because he wanted to behave naturally
or because he didn't really love Jesus/didn’t think of Jesus as a friend
