MRAKING SCHEME
1. (a) What happened at the baptism of Jesus which supports Mark’s opening
statement about who Jesus was?
as Jesus was baptized, the heaven opened
the Holy Spirit came down on Jesus like a dove
there was a voice from heaven
God spoke to Jesus “you are my own dear son…” (1:11)
(any 3 x 1 mark)
these things show that Jesus was especially anointed/chosen by God as
Messiah/Christ
God confirmed that Jesus was his Son/the Messiah (any 1 x 1 mark)
(c) (i) How Jesus’ s words and actions in Mark ch.1 showed who he was
Jesus preached the God News from God and announced the arrival of God’s
kingdom. This shows he was sent by God
Jesus called people to repent and believe the Good News – this showed he
was sent by God
Jesus called the fishermen to follow him - this shows he had authority to
require obedience
Jesus taught with a unique authority which amazed people
Jesus healed people and cast out demons which shows he had

2. (a) (i) according to the Pharisees, the Law should be observed by:
religious behaviour with specific rituals
strict external observance of the Law/by strictly keeping the letter of
the law rather than the spirit
keeping oral traditions which they had added
(up to 2 marks for each valid answer) (any 2 x 2 marks)
Example include:
fasting, Sabbath observance, ritual washing, etc.
(up to 2 marks for example + brief explanation) Total 6 marks
(ii) How Jesus’ teaching about the Law was the same as the Pharisees’:
he also held the Law in high Regards, he did not come to change the

(b) (i) In Luke 15:11-32, what lesson was Jesus teaching from the actions of
the father and each of the two sons? (6 marks)
(ii) Who would have been happy and who would been unhappy to hear this
teaching? (2 marks)
(c) In your opinion, how would Jesus expect us to act towards someone with
AIDS? (2 marks)

(b) (i) The lessons Jesus was teaching through the actions of the father and
each of the two sons:
father as merciful God who receives repentant sinners back with joy;
he is generous, allows free will, is loving to both of his sons and
forgiving (up to 2 marks)
younger son is like a sinner/outcasts/tax-collector who follows his own
way, but finally ‘comes to his senses’, repents and returns to father; he
does not defend his actions, but only asks for mercy (up to 2 marks)
elder son is like the Pharisees/teachers of the Law/he has been obedient
and is therefore angry and jealous at his brother’s welcome; he should
be glad to see his brother repent
(up to 2 marks) Total 6 marks
(ii) Who would have been happy/and who would have been unhappy:
the tax-collectors and outcasts would have been happy because they
could be accepted and forgiven by God just like the younger son
the Pharisees and the teachers of the Law would have been unhappy at
the thought of God welcoming outcasts and sinners (they were like the
elder brother) (2 x 1 marks)
N.B. If both groups are mentioned but with no explanation, award 1 mark
only.
(c) An opinion on how Jesus would expect is to act toward someone with AIDS
based on Jesus ‘attitude towards outcasts’. (up to 2 marks)
4. (a) (i) How did the crowed receive Jesus when he entered Jerusalem? (Mark
11:1-10) (4 marks)
(ii) Explain why the crowed behaved in such a way. (2 marks)

4. (a) (i) How did the crowed received Jesus when he entered Jerusalem? (Mk
11:1-10)
They:
gave Jesus royal entry (royal welcome)
spread cloaks and branches on road
praised God
identified Jesus as coming in the name of God and as bringing the
kingdom of David
or welcomed Jesus as Messiah (4 x 1 marks)
(b) The difference between the Gentile rulers and those who want to be greater
in Jesus’ kingdom (Mark 10:35-45):
Gentile rulers exert power and authority over others but in Jesus’ kingdom
greatness means service
Gentile rulers expect to be served but those great in the kingdom of God
must follow the example of the Son of Man/Jesus who came to serve
Gentile rulers often cause suffering but Jesus/rulers in God’s Kingdom are
marked by service and suffering for others
or any other valid statement (any 2 x 2
marks)
Messianic King
His healing and deliverance miracles indicate that Jesus is the Messianic
King spoken of by the prophets
Jesus preached about the Kingdom of God and called people to repent to
prepare for it (Mark 1:14)
Jesus spoke of himself as the Messiah/Son of Man/a heavenly King on the
throne of God (Mark 14:62)
Suffering/Servant King
In Mark 10 we find Jesus contrasting his rule with Gentile rulers and
speaking of himself as a servant willing to suffer/die for his people
His life/work support the idea that Jesus is a servant-king as he did healing
and cared for the suffering
His kingdom was/is open to all who repent e.g. Jesus associated with the
lowly and outcasts and made them all welcome
Almighty/Eternal King
Jesus spoke himself as the Messiah/Son of Man/a heavenly king on the
throne of God (Mark 14:62)
Jesus will return to establish his kingdom and will come back in great glory
(Mark 14:62)
his resurrection and ascension shows his power over death
his resurrection and ascension shows that he is a King appointed by God
