1. 'This is the Good News about Jesus Christ, the Son of God:' (Mark 1:1)
(a) What happened at the baptism of Jesus which supports Mark's opening
statement about who Jesus was? (4 marks)
(b) What was the importance of John the Baptist? (4 marks)
(c) From Mark chapter 1:
(i) How did Jesus' words and actions show who he was? (6 marks)
(ii) Mention TWO different reactions which people had to Jesus?

MRAKING SCHEME

1. (a) What happened at the baptism of Jesus which supports Mark’s opening
statement about who Jesus was?
 as Jesus was baptized, the heaven opened
 the Holy Spirit came down on Jesus like a dove
 there was a voice from heaven
 God spoke to Jesus “you are my own dear son…” (1:11)
(any 3 x 1 mark)
 these things show that Jesus was especially anointed/chosen by God as
Messiah/Christ
 God confirmed that Jesus was his Son/the Messiah (any 1 x 1 mark)

(b) What was the important of John the Baptist?


 he came in fulfillment of OT prophecy about a forerunner of Messiah
 he was messenger/forerunner to prepare the way for the Messiah, announce
His coming
 he preached repentance of sins to prepare for Messiah’s coming
 he baptized to show God’s forgiveness of sins
 he baptized Jesus
 he spoke about the coming of one/the Messiah/who would baptize with the
Holy Spirit (2 x 2 marks)

(c) (i) How Jesus’ s words and actions in Mark ch.1 showed who he was
 Jesus preached the God News from God and announced the arrival of God’s
kingdom. This shows he was sent by God
 Jesus called people to repent and believe the Good News – this showed he
was sent by God
 Jesus called the fishermen to follow him - this shows he had authority to
require obedience
 Jesus taught with a unique authority which amazed people
 Jesus healed people and cast out demons which shows he had
power/authority over demons and disease
 he had pity and compassion for the suffering as was prophesied of the
Messiah (e.g. for the leper 1:4)

his obedience to God in fulfilling his mission

 the fishermen obeyed the call to follow Jesus

2. (a) (i) According to the Pharisees, how should the Law be observed? Give
ONE example to support your answer. (6 marks)
(ii) In what way was Jesus’ teaching about the Law the same as the
Pharisees’? (2 marks)
(iii) In what way was Jesus’ teaching about the Law different from the
Pharisees’? Give TWO examples to support your answer. (6 marks)
(b) (i) What did Jesus mean when he talked about people being like “salt for
all mankind” and “light for the whole world”? (Matt 5:13-16)

2. (a) (i) according to the Pharisees, the Law should be observed by:
 religious behaviour with specific rituals
 strict external observance of the Law/by strictly keeping the letter of
the law rather than the spirit
 keeping oral traditions which they had added
 (up to 2 marks for each valid answer) (any 2 x 2 marks)
Example include:
 fasting, Sabbath observance, ritual washing, etc.
(up to 2 marks for example + brief explanation) Total 6 marks

(ii) How Jesus’ teaching about the Law was the same as the Pharisees’:
 he also held the Law in high Regards, he did not come to change the

 he also wanted the Law to be observed (Mt. 5:17) (any 2 x 1 mark)

(iii) How Jesus’ teaching about the Law was different from the Pharisees’
teaching”
 Jesus was concerned about internal attitudes (e.g. Mk.7:14-23, Mt.
6:16-18)/Jesus emphasized love can please God more than keeping the
letter of the Law
 Jesus set a higher standard (Mt. 5:20)
 Jesus opposed some oral traditions of the Pharisees’ (any 2 x 1
mark)

Any reasonable statement applying the answer given under (b)(i)
e.g. People can point out injustice (light) and work to change things (salt).

3. (a) (i) In Luke 10:25-37, what lesson was Jesus teaching from the actions of
the priest, of the Levite and the Samaritan? (6 marks)
(ii) Why would the teacher of the Law have been surprised by this
teaching? (4 marks)
(b) (i) In Luke 15:11-32, what lesson was Jesus teaching from the actions of
the father and each of the two sons? (6 marks)
(ii) Who would have been happy and who would been unhappy to hear this
teaching? (2 marks)
(c) In your opinion, how would Jesus expect us to act towards someone with
AIDS? (2 marks)

3. (a) (i) The lesson Jesus was teaching from the actions of the priest, the Levite

and the Samaritan:


 the parable shows that true love of neighbour is demonstrated through
acts of kindness/a good neighbour is one who cares for those in need
 the priest and/the Levite were religious leaders but they missed the
point if true religion and failed to help
 the Samaritan helped the wounded man (who was probably a Jew)
despite danger and cost to himself
 or any other valid answer (any 2 x 2 marks)
(ii) Why the teacher of the Law would have been surprised by this
teaching:
 Jesus wanted the Jews to treat Samaritans/Gentiles/outcasts as
neighbours
 the religious officials were not good neighbours, even though they
were ‘righteous’ Jews
 the Jews despised the Samaritans, yet Jesus used a Samaritan as a
positive example
 or the Samaritans were ‘outcasts’ religiously but the Jesus used a
Samaritan as an example of true religion
 or any other valid answer (any 2 x 2 marks)

(b) (i) The lessons Jesus was teaching through the actions of the father and
each of the two sons:
 father as merciful God who receives repentant sinners back with joy;
he is generous, allows free will, is loving to both of his sons and
forgiving (up to 2 marks)
 younger son is like a sinner/outcasts/tax-collector who follows his own
way, but finally ‘comes to his senses’, repents and returns to father; he
does not defend his actions, but only asks for mercy (up to 2 marks)
 elder son is like the Pharisees/teachers of the Law/he has been obedient
and is therefore angry and jealous at his brother’s welcome; he should
be glad to see his brother repent
(up to 2 marks) Total 6 marks

(ii) Who would have been happy/and who would have been unhappy:
 the tax-collectors and outcasts would have been happy because they
could be accepted and forgiven by God just like the younger son
 the Pharisees and the teachers of the Law would have been unhappy at
the thought of God welcoming outcasts and sinners (they were like the
elder brother) (2 x 1 marks)
N.B. If both groups are mentioned but with no explanation, award 1 mark
only.
(c) An opinion on how Jesus would expect is to act toward someone with AIDS
based on Jesus ‘attitude towards outcasts’. (up to 2 marks)

4. (a) (i) How did the crowed receive Jesus when he entered Jerusalem? (Mark
11:1-10) (4 marks)
(ii) Explain why the crowed behaved in such a way. (2 marks)
(b) From Mark 10:35-45, explain the difference between the Gentile rulers and

those who want to be great in Jesus’ kingdom. (4 marks)


(c) Using the Gospels to support your answer, explain what kind of king you
think Jesus is. (10 marks)

4. (a) (i) How did the crowed received Jesus when he entered Jerusalem? (Mk
11:1-10)
They:
 gave Jesus royal entry (royal welcome)
 spread cloaks and branches on road
 praised God
 identified Jesus as coming in the name of God and as bringing the
kingdom of David
 or welcomed Jesus as Messiah (4 x 1 marks)

(ii) Explain why the crowed behaved in such a way:


 David has been Israel’s greatest king and the Jews were waiting for the
restoration of his kingdom by his chosen descendant
 Jesus entered Jerusalem in a way that fulfilled Messianic prophecy
 Palestine was occupied by the Romans and the crowed expected Jesus
to overthrow them and establish political rule
 they thought that Jesus was going to set up the kingdom of God
(1 x 2 marks)

(b) The difference between the Gentile rulers and those who want to be greater
in Jesus’ kingdom (Mark 10:35-45):
 Gentile rulers exert power and authority over others but in Jesus’ kingdom
greatness means service
 Gentile rulers expect to be served but those great in the kingdom of God
must follow the example of the Son of Man/Jesus who came to serve
 Gentile rulers often cause suffering but Jesus/rulers in God’s Kingdom are
marked by service and suffering for others
or any other valid statement (any 2 x 2
marks)

(c) The kind of King Jesus is:


The following points may be used to indicated that Jesus is
Heavenly King
 Jesus’ kingship was different from earthly kingship because he was not born
in a palace/his birth was not like other royal births but it was clear he was a
King because angels announced his birth to the shepherds
 wise men came looking for a king and worshipped the child Jesus with gifts
of gold, frankincense and myrrh
 Jesus spoke about the characteristics of the citizens of the Kingdom in the
Beatitudes (Matt.5) indicating a very different Kingdom
 Jesus spoke of himself as the Messiah/Son of Man/a heavenly King on the
throne of God (Mark 14:62)

Messianic King
 His healing and deliverance miracles indicate that Jesus is the Messianic
King spoken of by the prophets
 Jesus preached about the Kingdom of God and called people to repent to
prepare for it (Mark 1:14)
 Jesus spoke of himself as the Messiah/Son of Man/a heavenly King on the
throne of God (Mark 14:62)
Suffering/Servant King
 In Mark 10 we find Jesus contrasting his rule with Gentile rulers and
speaking of himself as a servant willing to suffer/die for his people
 His life/work support the idea that Jesus is a servant-king as he did healing
and cared for the suffering
 His kingdom was/is open to all who repent e.g. Jesus associated with the
lowly and outcasts and made them all welcome
Almighty/Eternal King
 Jesus spoke himself as the Messiah/Son of Man/a heavenly king on the
throne of God (Mark 14:62)
 Jesus will return to establish his kingdom and will come back in great glory
(Mark 14:62)
 his resurrection and ascension shows his power over death
 his resurrection and ascension shows that he is a King appointed by God
 or any other valid answer (any 5 x 2
marks)

5. (a) (i) From Luke 24, why did the women go to the tomb and what did they
expect to find there? (4 marks)
(ii) Describe the women’s reactions to what they experienced at the tomb.

(iii) In your opinion, why did the apostles think that the women’s story was
nonsense? (4 marks)
(iv) Why did the apostles change their minds? (6 marks)
(b) Why do Christians believe that Jesus is alive today? (2 marks)

5. (a) (i) From Luke 24, why did the women go to the tomb and what did they
expect to find there?
 burial had not been completed because if Sabbath rest
 went to anoint holy with spices and perfumes
 expected to find stone in front of tomb
 expected to find body of Jesus wrapped in linen sheet (4 x 1 marks)

(ii) Describe the women’s reactions to what they experienced at the tomb.
 puzzled that stone was rolled away and body was gone
 fear and awe at appearance of men in shinning clothes
 remembered Jesus’ prophecy of death and resurrection

(iii) Why disciples thought that the women’s story was nonsense:
 in general people did not pay much attention to what women said
 society/the law courts did not credit the testimony of women
 the disciples either did not remember/did not believed/did not
understand Jesus’ prophecies regarding his death and resurrection
 the disciples were too afraid/confused/sad/disappointed to accept their
news
 any other reasonable answer (e.g. they thought body had been stolen)
(any 2 x 2 marks)

(iv) Why the apostles changed their minds:


 Peter saw the empty tomb and was amazed
 Jesus’ appearance on the road to Emmaus to two followers/they
recognized Jesus when he broke bread
 Testimony of male disciples to the Eleven
 Jesus’ explanations of what Scriptures said about himself, especially
regarding death and resurrection (v.45)
 the Lord appeared to Simon (v.34)
 the Eleven being able to see and touch Jesus
 Jesus eating fish and proving he was not a ghost (any 3 x 2 marks)

(b) Why Christians believe that Jesus is alive today:


 the empty tomb
 testimony of the Scriptures
 personal experience/encounter with Jesus
 they have been convinced by the preaching of the gospel
 they have heard of/seen/experienced miracles or answer to prayer
or any other reasonable answer (up to 2 marks)
