OWS and Occupy Oakland is a Wrong-Headed Movement - Not at all like Dr Kings Movement

Once again, Oakland cleans up from a riot Henry K. Lee, Chronicle Staff Writer Thursday, November 3, 2011 (11-03) 09:39 PDT OAKLAND -- Work crews and employees of trashed buildings in downtown Oakland set to work this morning cleaning up from the post-midnight riot that broke out after Occupy Oakland's daylong general strike. Grafti was spray-painted on many buildings along Broadway from 14th to 16th streets, where masked vandals shattered windows and threw objects at police. Ofcers responded by ring tear gas and ash-bang grenades and making dozens of arrests. As the sun rose, downtown Oakland business owners were again assessing the damage, much as they did after a series of protests related to the killing of unarmed BART rider Oscar Grant in 2009. This morning, crews were boarding up broken windows at the Tully's Coffee shop just steps from Frank Ogawa Plaza at 14th and Broadway, center of the nearly monthlong Occupy Oakland movement. The smell of cleaning chemicals was everywhere. A coffee shop employee who didn't want her name used voiced disappointment as she cleaned up. "The right people need to take accountability for what's being done with all the damage," she said, adding she was "discouraged. But we'll move on." At the Men's Wearhouse, which had closed Wednesday and put up signs in support of the general strike, windows were shattered. A box nearby read, "Cop uniform surrender box." No police uniforms were inside.

At the Travelers Aid Society building on 16th Street near Telegraph Avenue, which protesters broke into late Wednesday, broken windows were also boarded up. Spraypainted grafti was everywhere inside the vacant building, including, "Reclaiming property isn't violence" and obscenities directed at police. Grafti was sprayed on the Rite Aid and Walgreens drugstores across from each other at 14th and Broadway. A number of city buildings, including the Rotunda Building, were similarly defaced. Vandals also scrawled messages and broke windows at the Oakland Police Department's internal affairs and recruiting ofce on the plaza. "All cops are bastards," one message read. Three circled A's, the symbol for anarchy, were spray-painted in orange on the windows. City public works crews were using power washers to hose down the plaza, where tents remain and several campers were walking around. Such intimidation and harassment tactics, which are are being used daily by the Occupy Movement, are not in the spirit of Dr. King, who sought to unite the peoples of America, raise our awareness of injustices that exist, and bring about the orderly, legal, and needed changes within our society through peaceful protests. Rather than following in Dr Kings footsteps, the Occupy Movement use the criminal intimidation and harassment tactics used by gangsters, mobs, and violent revolutionaries. Kings righteous indignation over unjust segregation laws is one thing; the Occupy Movements furious marches and invasions, which are unleashed upon innocent people, is something altogether different. At noon hundreds of people surrounded a Chase bank, KNTV said. They chanted, Banks got bail out. We got sold out. And, Hey Chase what do you say? How many houses did you take today? An hour later, the Oakland Tribune reported, marchers pounded on the windows of a Bank of America branch and used markers to write on the glass. The branch was closed.

At 2 p.m., they started another march after also shutting down Comerica, Wells Fargo, and Chase branches for a time. Windows were smashed at one Wells Fargo ofce. The Oakland Tribune reported that agitators dressed in black with masks threw paint balls, ripped up a picket fence and tried to break windows at a Whole Foods market before about two dozen people marchers forced them to stop. There was lots of shoving and punches thrown.
