Abstract

With the era that we live in heavily depends on technology, just for example Cell phone, now our basic need. We may fail to remember to take our lunch with us but not the Cell Phone, also forgetting the fact that the radiations caused by this cell phone not only harm the environment but also us. Companies also depend on the environment for the raw materials hence limiting our resources. Soon in the near future petrol will be seen only in the museums. If we only knew how many different ways there are to improve the air we breathe and the water we drink every day. There is an urgent need of the development of alternative fuels, new means of generating energy and energy efficiency Not only does the government have to control over the steps to take care of the environment but companies producing their products like Cell phone, Vehicle etc should take initiative to improve the environment. With rising energy costs and the threat of global warming, any businesses are now recognizing the benefits of using technology to reduce their carbon footprint and minimize waste. Big business is a leading producer of greenhouse gases, but according to Janet Ranagathan, the director of the World Resources Institute, businesses voluntary reducing waste and energy consumption is the fastest way to curb greenhouse gases. Environmental technology or green technology is the technique used now days to conserve the natural environment and resources, and by curbing the negative impacts on human involvement. So companies are trying to implement the green technology as Green becomes trendy and will also improve business benefit from becoming part of the movement. Many companies claim to be green, while only making unsubstantial changes. In this paper I will try to enlighten the cause why green technology should be adopted by companies and initiatives or changes that the company like NOKIA have adopted to be green. How NOKIA are taking initiatives and strategies to improve the world with their new technological innovations. How NOKIA with their New Mobile Concept Morph

technology(green nanotechnology) and GO GREEN concept, and the hybrid cars will bring a huge green revolution in the near future of ours. The most urgent issue for green technology includes the innovations without harming the nature but also not compromising the spirit of new technology.

Introduction
Being green isnt as hard as we might think. Consider what you have in your pocket. Can a phone help you to save the environment? Everyone seems to be carrying around a lot of gadgets now a
2|P a ge

day, mp3 players, mobile phone, laptops, digital camera, navigator and so many. It is always nice to have information, entertainment and creativity with you in your pockets. But for that you should have good amount of money and time with you in your pocket to buy these things and charging it separately everyday. How would you feel if there is no need for carrying separate camera for capturing High resolution images, no ipod or mp3 player, no navigator or laptop device no separate credit card or visa, no PAN card or UID, a mobile charger or even a wrist watch, you just have to carry your cell phone? No you are not dreaming, Finnish company NOKIA has created the NOKIA Morph which is a concept mobile phone with all the features in one Mobile device. It will be the most environment friendly mobile till date NOKIA Design explains that the aim of NOKIA Morph is to illustrate how a portable personal device can connect to the hidden information in the surrounding physical world, help to save the environment my lesser use of technical devices and, at the same time, not compromising our daily needs. It just changes the way how we do it.

The device is not yet functional, and is affianced to provide a conceptual vitrics for all the future applications of nanotechnology in the realm of consumer electronics. The phone's theoretical feature list would include transparent electronics which would allow the device to be see-through yet functional; which would be so flexible that it can be bend into a wrist watch, so it can be worn around the wrist or held up to the face, a wrist watch that can take the color of any image which you feel will match your dress, selfcleaning surfaces, and that can absorb solar energy to recharge the phone's battery; and a wide range of fully integrated sensors. So no fear about loosing the phone if it falls from a height or water gets spilled over it, or about charging of battery if you forgot to bring the mobile charger or havent recharged it at home. Today while we are heavily dependent on our cell phones, scientists have found that cell phone causes radiations that can be dangerous for people, as well as for Apis Mellifera (bees). Through a thorough research and analysis it has been found that the radio-frequency radiation, a form of
3|P a ge

electromagnetic radiation, can heat and damage tissues, as well as possibly cause other diseases in the long term, including cancer, brain tumors, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and many more. Cell phone radiation affects are limited not only to human being however it has also been found that the radiation coming from the cell phones also make these little bees extinct, which can cause all kinds of problems environmentally. This little creature helps to pollinate crops and other plants, which helps vegetables and fruit to grow and replenish the oxygen in the air. NOKIA Morph mobile would release about 60% less radiations which would help both human and wonderful species Bees form getting endangered. Nanosensors would help users in examining the environment around them in completely new way, from analyzing air pollution, to gaining insight into bio-chemical traces and processes. New capabilities might be complex but will definitely help us monitor changing conditions in the quality of our surroundings, our environment or as simple as knowing if the fruit we are about to take should be washed before we eat it. Wears in, Not Out Concept: The concept explores how people could upgrade their devices they use and update their mobile phones, so there would be no tension about buying a new phone every six months or year for upcoming new feature. Zero Waste Charger Concept: This concept explores ways to reduce the energy wasted when chargers are unplugged from a mobile device but still left plugged from the live mains socket. Nanotechnology scientist are trying to make the surface of the device a way to natural source of energy via a covering of Nanograss structures that harvest solar power. Dont think you have to carry heavy solar panels or cells with you. Today new high energy density storage materials allow batteries to become smaller and thinner, which is quicker to recharge and is able to endure more charging cycles without using any electricity.

Changing in these ways can help us make key decisions that guide our daily actions which degrade our environment and ultimately can enhance our environment and so our health. If only 10 per cent of NOKIA mobile users out of those billions switched to this type of technology phones to do-it-all, would result in a cut out of 25million tons of CO2 emissions throughout a year. It will be just a boon to our coming generations.

We had conducted a survey that how many persons are interested in buying this cell phone through the largest social networking website Facebook, and we were amazed at what we found.

Phone Recycling Concept adopted by NOKIA

When asked about what people do with their mobile devices that are no longer in use? the majority of people stated that they not only have kept their phones and stored them away or sold them to somebody for use at low cost, but that most of them are not even aware of the options available for recycling their old phones and devices. In addition to the NOKIAs drop-off box (at the NOKIA flag ship store), NOKIA offers their users the opportunity to pick up a postage paid mailer, a nation-wide toll free number (1-877 RECYCLES). If the users are not satisfied with the mere recycling, they can sell or donate their old phones through the ReThink program, a partnership between EBay and the electronics manufacturers like NOKIA. About 65% 80% of the phone is recyclable, including the plastic casing, the battery and the valuable components such as silver, gold, and palladium, and if we still have it, the original packaging. NOKIAs product creation is guided by life cycle thinking. It has also adopted Phone recycling concept. It has helped NOKIA continuously to improve the environmental aspects of their products and processes in each phase of the product life cycle until the end of phone life. NOKIA uses life cycle assessment (LCA) as a standard measurement for calculating the environmental impact, greenhouse gas emissions and energy usage of the products and processes. By identifying the sources of emissions and energy use over the lifecycle of a phone, NOKIA have already been able to take action in minimizing the environmental impact of our mobile devices. NOKIA has recently launched a new cell phone called the 3310 Evolve which is more environmentally friendly. The Evolve is one of the great examples of a recycling concept, made from biomaterials and 60% recycled packaging. Right now these phones are only available in
5|P a ge

Europe only. All the measures adopted are part of NOKIAs world domination plan: to become the leading company in environmental performance. NOKIAs focus extends not only across the lifecycle of the product and beyond the boundaries of company but also has one of the most aggressive supply chain management oversight processes as well. It was documented in the 2004 BBC film, Made in China. If every NOKIA user recycled just one unused phone at the end of its life, together we would save nearly 125,000 tonnes of raw materials.

Sustainability Report
NOKIA has released Sustainability Report for 2010 in which they have presented some global challenges and how NOKIA can play a part in providing solutions. NOKIA claimed that all their phones are made from materials that can be 100 per cent recoverable at the end of their lives to make new products or to generate energy from them. Their focus is on: using approved, tested and sustainable materials and substances in the products improving the energy efficiency of the devices, applications and enhancements including chargers developing smaller and smarter packaging for their products engaging people who use their devices via eco software and services and recycling NOKIA recently launched the popular cell devices like NOKIA N8, NOKIA E7, NOKIA C6-01, and NOKIA C7 come with many of the latest sustainable and energy-saving features. For example, they have been constructed using recycled and environmentally-friendly materials; include features like Power Save mode, OLED display, an 'Unplug charger' reminder, and an in-device e-guide (allowing us to supply reduced quick guides in sales packages); and use the latest high efficiency chargers. NOKIA chargers have steadily improved over the years to deliver the most efficient performance possible. Over the last decade, they have reduced the average no-load power consumption of the chargers by over 80%, and the best-in-class chargers by over 95%. All the new devices are free of brominated and chlorinated compounds, antimony trioxide and PVC. Free of mercury, lead and many other substances of concern since various years. NOKIA have used biopaints, bioplastics and recycled metals in their eco lead devices. The possibility to download software updates allows you to always have the best performance and the latest features in your device thus also increasing its life span. NOKIA also offers a series of eco-themed games and apps to help their users learn more about the environment.

This is what a phone is made up of and is recycled by NOKIA after drop offs.

Environmental Impact
NOKIA have continually reduced the environmental impact of their products. To give an example, the NOKIA X2, the current equivalent of the old NOKIA 3310 from 2000, has just a third of the environmental impact, despite its larger color screen and other technological improvements.

The pictures below visualize the average environmental impact of a NOKIA mobile device. The impact is reported in terms of energy use and greenhouse gas emissions, and is split between the different device life cycle phases. The total energy consumption for creating, using and recycling a typical NOKIA mobile device is 210MJ and the total emissions are 12kg C0 2e. This equals to driving 71km in a typical family car.

7|P a ge

The environmental impact of a device varies according to its weight and the functionalities it offers. The mobile phones with just basic functionalities have typically smaller environmental impact than the devices with wide range of features.

However, more capable devices (with, for example, an excellent camera, music player, navigation, web browser and other features) provide you with the opportunity to reduce your personal environmental footprint. Instead of buying, using and charging multiple devices for different purposes, you can have all these functionalities in one NOKIA device. Making sustainable choices in your daily life will further reduce your personal footprint: with your NOKIA mobile device, it's easy to be green!

Small package makes a big difference

8|P a ge

The materials NOKIA choose for the packaging is selected to offer the best, most beautiful and most protective solution with least environmental impact. An effective way to reduce the environmental impact of packaging is through making the sales packages smaller, selecting sustainable materials and making sure packaging can be recycled when its no longer needed. Already in 2006 NOKIA introduced small, compact packaging which consequently has become the industry standard for mobile phones. NOKIAs compact packages are made of a single material, which makes them much easier to recycle. The weight and size of packaging affects not only material use but also the emissions and energy required to transport and stores the products. In 2005 - 2010 NOKIA reduced the packaging size of our most affordable devices by over 70%. This amounts to 240,000 tons of saved paper. Smaller and lighter packaging has also reduced transportation needs. In theory, we now only need one third of the trucks to transport these products.

Looking at NOKIAs entire portfolio, NOKIA packages are now 50 % smaller in size than in 2005 and NOKIA is trying in making them even smaller. More than 95% of NOKIAs packaging is made from renewable, paper-based materials, of which up to 60 % is recycled content. And when plastic is used, they are able to include up to 90% recycled content. NOKIA is constantly working with their suppliers to increase the amount of recycled content in the packaging. All our packaging is 100% recyclable.

Excluding charger from the sales box

In May 2010 NOKIA started selling the NOKIA 6700 slide also without a charger at the NOKIA Branded Retail shops in the UK and Portugal. The device comes in an ultrathin Flat package that comprises also small user guide, short data cable and a headset. The environmental impact of selling the NOKIA 6700 slide without a charger in a tiny package is around 25 % smaller when compared to the standard NOKIA 6700 slide package with a charger. This is basically due to reduced use of materials and reduced logistical impact. Excluding the charger from the sales box also enables reductions in both energy consumption in the production phase and in the end of life treatment needs.

NOKIA has piloted product sales without a charger already during 2007 in the UK telesales by O2, and in early 2009 the NOKIA online stores in UK, France, Spain and Italy sold the N79 black version without a charger. By selling the phone without a charger we encourage people to reuse their old, compatible charger. Additionally it's possible to use the PC data cable for charging.

Talking about Green how can we forget Hybrid Cars?

10 | P a g e

Hybrid-electric vehicles (HEVs) combine the benefits of gasoline engines and electric motors and can be configured to obtain different objectives, such as improved fuel economy, increased power, or additional auxiliary power for electronic devices and power tools. Some of the advanced technologies typically used by hybrids include Regenerative Braking. The electric motor applies resistance to the drive train causing the wheels to slow down. In return, the energy from the wheels turns the motor, which functions as a generator, converting energy normally wasted during coasting and braking into electricity, which is stored in a battery until needed by the electric motor. Electric Motor Drive/Assist. The electric motor provides additional power to assist the engine in accelerating, passing, or hill climbing. This allows a smaller, more efficient engine to be used. In some vehicles, the motor alone provides power for low-speed driving conditions where internal combustion engines are least efficient. Automatic Start/Shutoff. Automatically shuts off the engine when the vehicle comes to a stop and restarts it when the accelerator is pressed. This prevents wasted energy from idling.

11 | P a g e

We are all familiar with gasoline-powered cars, and most people have heard about or seen electric cars. A hybrid car is a combination of the two. A hybrid vehicle contains parts of both gasoline and electric vehicles in an attempt to get the best of both worlds. The best way to understand the advantages of a hybrid vehicle is to think about a car traveling down a highway at the posted speed on level ground. In this case, the engine is doing three things: 1. It is overcoming rolling resistance in the drive train. 2. It is overcoming air resistance. 3. It is powering accessories like the alternator, the power steering pump and the air conditioner. The engine might need to produce no more than 10 or 20 horsepower (HP) to carry this load. The reason why cars have 100- or 200-horsepower engines to is handle acceleration from a standing stop, as well as for passing and hill climbing. We only use the maximum HP rating for 1% of our driving time. The rest of the time, we are carrying around the weight and the friction of the much larger engine, which wastes a lot of energy. In a traditional hybrid vehicle, you have a complete electric car. It includes an electric motor to provide all of the power to the wheels, as well as batteries to supply the motor with electricity. Then you have a completely separate gasoline engine powering a generator. The engine is very small -- perhaps 10 to 20 horsepower -- and it is designed to run at just one speed for maximum efficiency. The purpose of this small, efficient engine is to provide enough power for the car at its cruising speed. During times of acceleration, the batteries provide the extra power necessary. When the car is decelerating or standing still, the batteries recharge. This sort of hybrid car is essentially an electric car with a built-in recharger for longer range. The advantage is that the small, efficient gasoline engine gets great mileage.

Findings
Using the latest NOKIA Morph Concept technology near about 60-65% of radiations would decrease. All the measures adopted are part of NOKIAs world domination plan: to become the leading company in environmental performance. NOKIAs focus extends across the lifecycle of the product and beyond the boundaries of company. NOKIA is also making profit as from the recycle material they are creating new phone so the material cost is decreased by about 40-50% like in case of 3310 Evolve. Reduction in use of petroleum and other natural non renewable fuels due to arrival of Green car.

Conclusion
That "green" is the buzzword for all kinds of companies and organizations is not surprising but that a conglomerate like NOKIA is going all-out in terms of making their products more environmentally friendly is not so common still and can be said as the leading GREEN company. The companys Morph Concept will bring a green revolution in the market. Companies are doing every bit to help save the environment, what you will do from now to save the environment.
