Gar-Binz Finds a New Way to Grab Business

A growing construction business decides to combat increasing waste accumulation by purchasing the equipment necessary to stay ahead of the competition.

Gary Mac LeLLan of Gar-Binz Waste reMovaL Services, Ltd. in Edmonton, Canada has always been innovative when it comes to making money. Hes been involved with everything from taking small odd jobs to handling both light and heavy construction. Mac Lellan recalls starting as a handy man with only $7 in his pocket and earning $20 for fixing a fence. Soon after his first project, the small jobs became plentiful and more involved as his reputation preceded him. He became so busy, in fact, that by the end of the year hed brought in nearly $100,000 in profits. Through the years, Mac Lellan expanded his growing construction business to include even larger renovation projects. He discovered that as the size of the worksites increased, so did the accumulation of

refuse. Mac Lellan observed that, in some cases, the garbage haulers couldnt keep up with removing the trash from the jobsites. Seeing that there was a niche to fill, Gary decided to purchase some rear loader garbage trucks of his own. Those trucks changed the way he looked at waste from that time forward. The compacting trucks made Mac Lellan realize that there were plenty of opportunities for him in the refuse industry. Thinking ahead, he decided to go with a hook loader system so that bins could be delivered and removed in a more convenient manner.

want a little sliver of that pie. With that in mind, he attended a waste industry trade show to look for innovative ways to move his business forward. Thats where he met Hans Vooys, Sales Manager for Palfinger American Roll-Off, who introduced Mac Lellan to Palfingers Hooklift container systems and Epsilon crane. Hans comments that Gary puts the E in Entrepreneur because he is open to new concepts that will put his business ahead of the competition. Palfinger American Roll-Off is a part of the Palfinger North America Group. Palfinger has now become one of the leading truck equipment manufacturers in North America. They offer a comprehensive product portfolio of cranes, hooklifts, cable hoists, truck mounted forklifts, liftgates, service bodies and aerial platforms. One of the features that Gary was looking for in a hookloader was an adjustable hook. Many recycling and removal companies face the same challenge in that containers can have different pick up bar heights. This becomes problematic adding the need for several trucks to accommodate the different containers. Vooys explained that Palfinger hooklifts offer an adjustable hook that resolves this issue. He said that it is simply described as a hydraulically telescopic jib that easily adjusts from 36" to 54" bar heights. All the driver has to do is flip a switch and the hook is extended or retracted without ever leaving the truck cab. The same can be said for the loading and unloading of the bins which keeps the driver safe and out of the elements.

Improving Services
Knowing that Gar-Binz wanted to offer more recycling and waste removal services, Vooys also explained the features and benefits of the Epsilon crane to Gary. These hydraulic knuckle boom cranes were designed for repetitive,

heavy-duty applications, such as forestry, scrap processing and waste hauling. Gary liked it so much that Hans invited him to Palfingers North American headquarters in Niagara Falls for a demonstration. The Advantage in the Waste Industry Once he saw it in action, Gary knew he had to have one. He described the cranes movement by saying its like an extension of your arm, as quick as you think of what you want to do, itll do it; its that fast. The model that Mac Lellan purchased is actually a combination of two Palfinger productsthe Epsilon Q150Z96 and T-24 Hooklift to improve his recycling and removal services. The Z series of the Palfinger Epsilon allows the crane to fold up neatly on the back of the truck. This compact design provides more room for payload whether it is cab or rear mounted. This line of cranes offers a wide range of models with a stunning variety of options available. For example, Epsilon cranes for the recycling industry come standard with overload protection and a top seat which can be enclosed in a cabin as an alternative. Although the top seat is standard, another option available is a choice of five different seat positions to optimize the operators field of vision. Other options include a radio remote control as well as a stand up station that the radio remote can be operated from as well. The Epsilon Q150Z96 crane that Gary has equipped on his truck is from the heavy-duty side of the line. Its capacity is impressive since it can lift up to 10,275 pounds at 9' 10". This same model can lift 3,240 pounds at 29' 6" when jobs require more reach.

businesses in multiple industries due to their efficiency and versatility. Containers can be loaded and unloaded quickly, which allows for more pickups and deliveries. Since more containers can be handled in a short span of time, more customers can be managed. Ultimately, this leads to more profit for the business. It takes less than The Advantage in the Waste Industry a minute from the moment the operator shifts the truck into reverse until the container is loaded. Another example of a Hooklifts flexibility is that there are so many container styles available. One truck can do the work of several, which dramatically impacts overhead costs. Its the flexibility that makes this truck unique. Mac Lellan isnt limited to waste removal and recycling. The Hooklift allows him to use virtually any type of bed. For instance, Gar-Binz can drop off a dump container to be filled with scrap metal and picked up later. After dropping the container off, he can then equip a flatbed to haul his skid steer to another location. Mac Lellan could also expand his business by having a salt spreading container engaged for winter use. When asked how many body styles there are for Hooklift systems, Hans replied, The design is so simple that just about any body type you can imagine can be fitted for use with a Hooklift. With the future of some industries still being a bit uncertain, Hooklifts can offer business owners many options with one truck. Times may be difficult but Mac Lellans company has a positive outlook with their slogan that cleverly describes their service, Our business is picking up. As Mac Lellans waste removal business grows, he expresses Ill be buying more Palfingers for sure. | WA Kristie Pohlman is the Marketing and Customer Relations Specialist for Palfinger North America (Niagara Falls, ON).
