Week 5 Assignment
Week 5 Weblinks Overall the materials in the text and CD-ROM are quite good and provide you with a great overview of the primates. But for those of you who were not satisfied (either because there wasn't enough information or you didn't care for the way it was presented) there are an overwhelming number of sites on the web that deal exclusively with the primates. So I will just steer you toward some particularly good ones (or ones that are my favorites). LIVING LINKS: A Center for the Advanced Study of Ape and Human Evolution

Want to hear some chimpanzee vocalizations or watch some video? This is the place to go. You will new do download the RealPlayer to hear the sounds, if you have not done so already. Accessed August 25, 2007. AFRICAN PRIMATES AT HOME

Another place to hear some primate vocalizations, and there are some great links to other primates sites. Accessed August 25, 2007. CHIMPANZEE CULTURES

This awesome site shows you many aspects of our closest living relatives, chimpanzees. Focusing primarily on chimpanzee culture. Accessed August 25, 2007. PRIMATE BEHAVIOR

Week 5 Assignment Ancestral traits is related to a primitive character state which reflects on an ancestral condition that does not have diagnostic derived lineages that branches out later (Jurmain, et al. (2012) (p 115), which is more generalized due to the humans using their hands to grasp things, their facing forward eyes to see, and their brains large enough for their body size. Derived characteristics are more from the ancestral conditions or particular evolutionary lineages which are specialized for a specific function, like in humans being our obligate bipedalism and our articulate abstract speech. (Jurmain, et al. (2012) (p 135, 136). Cited: Jurmain, R., Kilgore, L., Trevathan, W. & Ciochon, R., (2012). Introduction To Physical Anthropology 13/e. ch.5, 6 (p115, 124, 135, 136)
