Montcalm County couples murder still
under investigation one year later
MONTCALM COUNTY Fri-
day marked the one-year anni-
versary of the murder of Pierson
residents Michael and Kathleen
Greene, but the Montcalm County
Sheriffs Offce reports that the
case still remains open with the
investigation ongoing.
Police received a call of a house
fre at about 11:18 p.m. on Oct. 28,
2010, at the Greenes house, locat-
ed at 3063 Shorecrest Drive on Big
Whitefsh Lake in Pierson Town-
ship. After the fre was contained,
local frefghters discovered the
bodies of Michael Greene, 59, and
his 56-year-old wife, Kathleen, in
the basement of their lakefront
home.
Both Michael and Kathleen
were stabbed to death, but police
believe Michael Greene resisted or
fought with his attacker prior to
succumbing to his wounds. There
is evidence to suggest the attacker
was in the Greenes home for some
time prior to killing them.
Investigators believe the sus-
pect took cash and prescription
medication from the Greenes
home before setting it on fre, ac-
cording to previous statements
from the Montcalm County Sher-
iffs Offce.
The Greenes are survived by
four children and several grand-
children. The couple was in the
process of downsizing to a smaller
home, and Michael had recently
retired.
In addition to the hours of in-
vestigation done by the Montcalm
County Sheriffs Offce and the
Michigan State Police, the case has
also been discussed with agents of
the Federal Bureau of Investiga-
tions and of the Bureau of Alcohol,
Tobacco and Firearms.
Police say neighbors reported
seeing people in the Greenes
driveway on the night of the mur-
der. Investigators are still search-
ing for a larger, white vehicle, pos-
sibly a SUV-style vehicle, as well
as an individual who was in the
area prior to the homicide.
Anyone with information is en-
couraged to contact Det. Sgt. Tom
George of the Montcalm County
Sheriffs Offce at (989) 831-7516,
the Sheriffs Offce tip line at (989)
831-7593 or Silent Observer at

of treats as well.
A HUGE thanks goes to our very

MCC hosts Nov. 14
presentation by Grand
Rapids Symphony
conductor
SIDNEY The Musings and Music
of Maestro David Lockington, conductor
of the Grand Rapids Symphony Orches-
tra, is Nov. 14 at Montcalm Community
College.
Lockington will play his cello and of-
fers a lecture to students, faculty, staff
and community members from noon
to 1 p.m. in rooms D303-305 in MCCs
Beatrice E. Doser Building. Lunch is pro-
vided for students with a current MCC ID
and is $2 for all others.
Gary Hauck, MCC Dean of Instruction
and Faculty and the event organizer, said
Lockingtons presentation focuses on va-
rieties of music and how we can relate to
them as well as enjoy them.
Lockington began his career as prin-
cipal cellist with the National Youth
Orchestra of Great Britain. Soon after
completing his bachelors degree at the
University of Cambridge, he came to the
United States on a scholarship to Yale
University. He and his wife, Dylana Jen-
son, reside in Grand Rapids and have
four children.
The 2011-2012 season commemorates
Lockingtons 13th season as music direc-
tor with the Grand Rapids Symphony.
The New York Times has recognized the
orchestra for being a model in the classi-
cal music world. The Symphony earned
a 2007 Grammy Award nomination and
has recorded four CDs under Locking-
tons direction.
The event is sponsored by MCCs Cul-
ture and Travel Club. Visit www.mont-
calm.edu or contact Hauck at garyh@

GREENVILLE Providing world-
class care requires an unwavering com-
mitment to patient safety and quality.
Medical staff and employees at Spectrum
Health United and Kelsey hospitals are
dedicated to providing patients with the
highest quality and safest treatment pos-
sible.
It is because of this dedication that
United and Kelsey hospitals continue their
partnership with the Michigan Health &
Hospital Association (MHA) through the
MHA Keystone Center for Patient Safety
& Quality. The Keystone Center is dedi-
cated to the implementation of evidence-
based best practices and has garnered na-
tional recognition for its impact on safety
and quality across the state.
These innovative actions have con-
vened hospitals throughout the state to
voluntarily share best practices and infor-
mation, not only beneftting our patients,
but helping position Michigan as the na-
tional benchmark for patient safety, qual-
ity and effciency.
These efforts have had a dramatically
positive effect on Michigans health care
system preventing infections, accidental
harm and readmissions; saving thousands
of lives; reducing ineffciencies; saving
hundreds of millions of dollars; empow-
ering consumers to make informed health
care decisions and more.
Spectrum Health United Hospital is
currently active in these MHA Keystone
initiatives:
MHA Keystone: Surgery
The surgery program focuses on elimi-
nating surgical site infections, preventing
defects in care (including wrong-site sur-
gery and retained foreign objects), elimi-
nating mislabeled specimens and improv-
ing the safety and teamwork climate for
surgeries performed.
MHA Keystone: Obstetrics (OB)
The OB program focuses on eliminat-
ing preventable fetal and maternal harm
due to complications of labor. Strategies
are incorporated to reduce the number of
birth injuries from the current estimate of
three injuries for every 1,000 births in the
United States.
Both Spectrum Health United and
Kelsey hospitals participate in:
MHA Keystone: Emergency Room
(ER)
The emergency room program aims
to prevent harm to emergency patients
by improving safety practices and atti-
tudes, reducing boarding/overcrowding
and wait times, and supporting the early
treatment of sepsis using evidence-based
best practices. These interventions en-
sure the most critically ill patients receive
treatment frst and reduce the likelihood
that a patient will leave a hospital before
being seen.
MHA Keystone: Gift of Life
The Gift of Life program brings to-
gether Michigan hospitals and Gift of Life
Michigan to improve the organ donation
processes using evidence-based best prac-
tice. These efforts have helped grow the
number of people on the Michigan Organ
Donor Registry from 482,000 in 2003 to
nearly 2.3 million in August 2011, contrib-
uting signifcantly to saving and improv-
ing the lives of thousands of residents.
MHA Keystone: Hospital-Associated
Infection (HAI)
The largest of the collaboratives, MHA
Keystone: HAI seeks to prevent infections,
which occur in approximately one of ev-
ery 20 hospitalized patients nationwide.
These infections are estimated to result in
99,000 associated deaths and $6.65 bil-
lion in excess health care costs nationally
each year. Development of HAIs puts pa-
tients at risk of mortality, longer lengths
of stay and higher costs.
The quality and patient safety team at
United and Kelsey hospitals is dedicated
to participating in and utilizing the data
from the MHA Keystone initiatives, said
Brian Brasser, chief nursing offcer. We
continually are seeking ways to provide
our patients with an exceptional health
care experience. We will continue to be
involved with these programs in order to
offer the safest, most effective care to all.

Dr. Lory Read will serve as
the medical director and provide
physician oversight. Clinical ser-
vices will be provided by a mid-
level practitioner, a registered
nurse liaison, and a medical so-
cial worker. The Lakeview Youth
Clinic Director is Brian Brasser,
chief operating offcer of Spec-
trum Health Kelsey Hospital and
program coordinator is Jodi An-
iszko.
While located in Lakeview,
the Lakeview Youth Clinic is open
to adolescents ages 10-21 from all
communities. Additionally, no
adolescent will be turned away
due to inability to pay.
One of the main goals of the
Lakeview Youth Clinic is to pro-
vide care to teens that are unin-
sured or underinsured, Aniszko
said. While we will accept all
insurances, we know that many
local teens might not have ac-
cess to coverage. Because of this,
our team will work with patients
to cover medical costs through a
sliding fee scale as well as Medic-
aid assistance.
In planning for the Lakeview
Youth Clinic, a community advi-
sory committee was established
to develop goals and build sup-
port for the clinic and its mission.
This committee consists of par-
ents, students, local businesses
and service organizations. Mem-
bers of the group are placed into
sub-committees based on role,
background and area of interest.
Sub-committees provide guid-
ance to clinic leadership in areas
such as fnancial, quality and
marketing. Anyone interested
in participating in the commu-
nity advisory committee for the
Lakeview Youth Clinic is encour-
aged to contact Aniszko at (989)
352-1765.
In addition to the clinic, the
awarded grant allows for vari-
ous intervention activities to oc-
cur within Lakeview Community
Schools. These clinical interven-
tions will be presented to students
in the form of wellness programs.
In 2012, the programs will focus
on be mental health (including
bullying and suicide prevention)
and physical activity and nutri-
tion. Staff will help students un-
derstand how preventative mea-
sures can help them avoid both
short term and long term conse-
quences of poor decisions.
We are excited about the op-
portunity to reach out to students,
both in the Clinic setting and
school setting, said Jodie Faber,
director of Spectrum Health Unit-
ed Lifestyles, the wellness and
prevention program associated
with Spectrum Health United and
Kelsey hospitals. Faber is part of
a large team of individuals who
worked to plan for and launch the
clinic.
Since 2008, our team has de-
sired to fnd new ways to provide
medical and preventative care to
teens, Faber added. The open-
ing of the Lakeview Youth Clinic
and the school-linked interven-
tion programs is the result of this
planning and hard work. We hope
to help youth from all communi-
ties fnd people and services to
meet their unique needs in a con-
fdential setting.
Administration and staff at
the Lakeview Area Schools are
equally eager for the clinic and
programs to begin.
Our students will now have
greater access to professionals
and programs they can use to bet-
ter their lives. We are thrilled to
partner with Kelsey Hospital in
giving our local youth the educa-
tion and tools they need to make
wise choices and instill lifelong
wellness habits, said Sara Shriv-
er, principal of Lakeview Elemen-
tary School.
The Lakeview Youth Clinic
will be open for appointments
from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Mon-
days, Thursdays and Fridays.
For additional information
or to make an appointment, call
(989) 352)1800. A community
open house is being planned and
will be announced at a future
time.

My friend Richard Sutphen tells an interesting story about his experience as a participant in a Divine Matrix seminar
conducted by quantum physicist and author Gregg Braden. Much of Greggs work relates to his long search through
ancient culture, their writings and sacred texts for a more effective form of prayer. Gregg says that classic method of
many of our prayersasking God for what we wantactually cancels out our request. We often begin a prayer by
acknowledging we do not have what we want. Heres an excerpt from Greggs book, Secrets of the Lost Mode of
Prayer. He describes accompanying a friend on a hike through the New Mexico high desert. During a time of drought,
his friend David wanted to pray for rain within a medicine wheel. I wasnt prepared for what I saw next. I watched
carefully as David removed his shoes, gently placed his naked feet into the circle, and honored the four directions and
all of his ancestors. Slowly, he placed his hands in front of his face in a praying position, closed his eyes and became
motionless. Oblivious to the heat of the midday desert sun, his breathing slowed and became barely noticeable. After
only a few moments, he took a deep breath, opened his eyes to look at me, and said, Lets go. Our work is nished
here. Expecting to see dancing, or at least some chanting, I was surprised by how quickly this prayer began and then
ended. Already? I asked. I thought you were going to pray for rain! Davids reply to my question has been the key
that has helped so many to understand this kind of prayer. As he sat on the ground to lace up his shoes, David looked
up at me and smiled. No, he replied. I said that I would pray rain. If I have prayed for rain, it would never happen.
Gregg asked, If you didnt pray for rain, then what did you do? Its simple, he replied. I began to have the feeling of
what rain feels like. I felt the feeling of rain on my body, and what it feels like to stand with my naked feet in the mud
in our village plaza because there has been so much rain. I smelled the smells of rain on the earthen walls in our village,
and felt what it feels like to walk through elds of corn chest high because there has been so much rain. David had
used his thoughts, feelings and emotions to perceive what he desired as an already accomplished fact. Although Gregg
does not go into it in the book, in the seminar he said the following day it started to rain and
did not stop until after the rain itself had become a problem. In another segment of the seminar,
Gregg showed a video of a woman with inoperable cancer being healed at a medical clinic in
mainland China. A female technician used an ultra-sound monitor allowing us to see what was
happening within the patients body as three doctors chanted something to the effect of the
healing being ALREADY DONE. Within 2 1/2 minutes the cancer disappeared. The success rate
of such healings is over 90 percent if the patient is willing to establish new patterns of thinking,
diet and exercise.
For many years I have taught people to pray the solution, not the problem. This story from
Gregg Braden illustrates how to do that. I thought it was worthwhile to pass along. We can learn
to pray health, not for health or the removal of the disease.
Put Your Health in Your Own Hands. Bob Huttinga PA-C. 989-352-6500.

Rules for Baiting and Feeding Deer
Agency: Natural Resources
In Michigan, baiting and feeding is allowable except in Deer Management Unit 487, the
six-county bovine tuberculosis zone in northeastern Lower Michigan (Alcona, Alpena,
Iosco, Montmorency, Oscoda and Presque Isle counties). The rules for baiting and feed-
ing deer are as follows.
Baiting:
Bait means a substance composed of grains, minerals, salt, fruits, vegetables, hay or
other food materials, which may lure, entice or attract deer as an aid in hunting.
Baiting may occur only from Oct. 1 to Jan. 1.
The bait material may be of any food type.
The volume of bait at any hunting site cannot exceed two gallons.
The bait must be dispersed over a minimum of a 10-foot by 10-foot area.
The bait must be scattered directly on the ground. It can be scattered by any
means, including mechanical spin-cast feeders, provided that the spin-cast
feeder does not distribute more than the maximum volume allowed.
The DNR requests that individuals not place bait or feed repeatedly at the same
point on the ground, and only bait when actively hunting. This may minimize the
chance of direct and indirect exposure of deer to diseases that may be present.
Feeding for Recreational Viewing:
Feed means a substance composed of grain, mineral, salt, fruit, vegetable, hay or other
food material, that may attract deer or elk for any reason other than hunting.
The feed material may be of any food type.
The volume of feed at any residence cannot exceed two gallons.
Feed may be no more than 100 yards from a residence on land owned or pos-
sessed by that person.
The feed must be scattered on the ground. It can be scattered by any means,
including mechanical spin-cast feeders, provided that the spin-cast feeder does
not distribute more than the maximum daily volume allowed.
The feed must be scattered or dispersed at least 100 yards from any area acces-
sible to cattle, goats, sheep, new world camelids, bison, swine, horses or captive
cervidae.
Food plots, naturally occurring foods, standing agricultural crops or food placed
as a result of using normal agricultural practices are not considered to be bait or
feed.

To all you great Deer Hunters! Just a few eld tips for your trophy
Buck. If its not below 32 degrees you need to cape your deer as soon
as possible, no more than one day. Three days if it is. Cut around the
deer behind the shoulders, cut the front legs off just above the knees
and skin the deer up to the head and cut off. Put in plastic bag and
freeze it or take to your taxidermist. I will be happy to do it for you if
you bring it to me. Good Luck, and safe hunting. ~ Steve Pritchard

This very sweet Retriever mix girl
would like to go to a good forever
home. She was picked up as a stray
and taken to the shelter and is
ready to go now! Even though she
was a stray someone has spent a lot
of time with her, she understands
basic commands and can sit and
shake! Sweetie was found on Octo-
ber 12th with an old rope collar. She
weighs about 50 pounds and has a
beautiful red coat. She loves being
with people and seems to get along
with other dogs and kids. Sweetie
will make a wonderful family pet!
Come and meet her, you will like
her! (ID# 11/10/24)

Reclaim Your Garage
In A Weekend
(NAPSI) Is
your garage
dingy, cluttered
and in need of a
facelift? Trans-
forming it into
a showroom
for your car or
reclaiming it
for a workshop,
playroom or man cave isnt difcult. All it takes is
a weekend and a little elbow grease.
Many homeowners view the garage as an exten-
sion of the homenot just a place to store the
lawn mower, says Rust-Oleum brand manager
Mark Wilgen. A clean, well-organized garage can
provide extra living space, as well as add value to
a home. And reclaiming it can be a fun weekend
project that families can do together.
Heres how to get started:
Get rid of the clutter. Remove outdoor furni-
ture, sports equipment, lawn mowers and garage
clutter. Bag the trash, donate too-small bikes and
other items you no longer need and decide what
will go back in the garage after your work is done.
If youre like most homeowners, youll gain a lot
of space by clearing away the clutter.
Paint the walls. Most homeowners dont think
about painting the walls of their garage. Yet a coat
of ordinary latex paint can go a long way in bright-
ening the space and giving it a nished look. If
the garage has never been paintedor its been
painted with porous builders at paintmake
sure you prime rst with a quality primer. It will
seal the surface for a better paint job and youll
use less paint.
Dont forget the oor. Sweep it clean. Then
remove dirt, oil or grease spots using a cleaner/
degreaser and a stiff bristle brush and rinse thor-
oughly. To give your garage a showroom-quality
oor that will make you the talk of your neigh-
borhood, nish it with a coating specically for-
mulated for garage oors. It will protect the oor
against gasoline, antifreeze, motor oil, salt and hot
tire pickup and makes it simple to keep clean. And
its easy to apply
Toss the decorative paint chips as you nish each
section and youre done.
Its time to organize! From shelving to work-
benches to storage pieces designed for sports
equipment, there is a plethora of garage storage
options available to help you get organized. Visit
your local hardware store to nd the best option
for your needs. Youll be surprised how a little or-
ganization can maximize your garage space.

Automotive Guide
Prepare For
Winter Driving Before
Jack Frost Arrives
(NAPSI) Drivers should use the chang-
ing seasons as a reminder to engage in
routine tire maintenance.
If youll be driving in areas that typically
experience harsh winters, consider replac-
ing all-season tires with a product made
specically for that climate. The key is
to have those discussions with a trusted
dealer before the rst storm hits.
Even if an area does not typically receive
harsh winter weathe its important to con-
duct routine tire maintenance checks as
the seasons change.
Drive cautiously:
Double the distance when braking any-
time conditions are not dry.
Do not assume a four-wheel-drive vehi-
cle will stop faster than a two-wheel-drive
vehicle.
Always reduce speed during winter con-
ditions.
When getting winter tires, replace all
four to achieve the handling and traction
benets.
Check the owners manual to see how
the vehicle should be serviced in cold
weather.
Examine tread:
For winter-weather driving, the more
tread depth, the better. Tire tread depth
should be more than 2/32 of an inch deep
all around. To check tread depth, insert
the edge of a penny into the tread with
Lincoln going in headrst. If the top of his
head is covered by tread, theres at least a
minimum acceptable amount; if the top of
his head is visible, the tire is worn out and
its time to replace it.
While examining the tread, look for
signs of uneven wear or damage such as
cuts, cracks, splits, punctures and bulges.
Test air pressure: Underination creates
excessive stress on the tire, while overin-
ation can cause uneven wear in addition
to handling and braking issues.
Check the air pressure regularly.
Follow the guidelines found in the ve-
hicles owners manual or tire placard (or
sticker). A common myth is that the tire
pressure listed on the sidewall is the opti-
mal pressure; in reality, its the maximum
pressure.
Should any of these checks reveal the
need for maintenance, take your car to a
tire dealer for a professional inspection.

In Michigan in 2010 there were 55,867
reported car-deer crashes with 11 mo-
torists killed and 1,277 injured. About
80 percent of all car-deer crashes take
place on two-lane roads between dusk
and dawn. (Of the reported car-deer
accidents Kent County is number one
and Montcalm County is number six in
the states highest accident rate).
What can you do?
Stay aware, awake, alert, and sober.
Remember, safety belts are your best
defense in any collision.
Be alert for deer in spring and fall,
especially at dawn and dusk.
Heed deer crossing and speed limit
signs, particularly on two-lane roads.
If a crash is unavoidable:
Dont swerve!
Brake rmly
Hold on to the steering wheel.
Stay in your lane.
Bring your vehicle to a controlled stop.
We at Hills Body Shop have noticed an increase in deer hits in the month of October through December
and a big surge directly after the end of Daylight Savings, because more people are still on the road at
sunset.
If you have had the misfortune of hitting a deer, Hills Body Shop, Inc. is here to help restore your ve-
hicle to its pre-accident condition. Your insurance company may refer you to one of their preferred
repair facilities. These body shops have an agreement with your insurance company to keep down the
cost of your vehicle repair in exchange for referrals. We believe its not in your best interest to take
your vehicle to these contracted repair shops. We believe safety and quality should come before cost,
whereas these preferred shops seem to put cost before quality and safety. We believe it to be unethi-
cal to cheapen your vehicle repair to save your insurance company money. Youre our customer, not
your insurance companys. Hills Body Shop, Inc. has always and will always provide the nest repairs
available.
For more information about what you can do to avoid a car-deer accident and what to do if you do have
a car-deer accident, please visit our website http://www.hillsbodyshop.com/

Nothing sells like fear. Its why the news is lled with it.
Fear guarantees more eyes will be glued to the TV when the
commercials come on. Since TV lives to sell commercials,
fear and violence rule the airwaves at newstime. Were
fed fear of murdering parents, murdering burglars, mur-
dering neighborhoods, murderous politicians. Thousands
die in the African continent and in Pakistan. Terrorists are
bombing and kidnapping. War endures in Afghanistan.
Massacres abroad. Massacres at home. Headless people
in Mexico. Fear is pushed everywhere - TV, telephones,
tablets, computers, magazines, newspapers. We abhor it.
Yet we cant wait to see the news! Well, heres the good
news:
The news is wrong, so wrong. The annual number of vio-
lent deaths worldwide since the beginning of recorded time
has declined markedly, and continues rapidly, says Steven
Pinker in a book The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why
Violence Has Declined. From the million+ that died in
biblical times to now, peace has been running rampant.
Peace is happening. Pinker writes: The decline of vio-
lence may be the most signicant and least appreciated
development in the history of our species. A Harvard
University professor, Pinker explains not only how ex-
traordinarily fast violence has been declining worldwide,
but possibly why. Pinker collected information about vio-
lence from around the globe, information documented by
hundreds of different academics meaning people who
spend their lifes work doing this stuff and over thou-
sands of years. Some of Pinkers interesting information:
Worldwide wars. Before the world began to organize
into civilized countries, for every 100,000 people world-
wide, more than 500 died violent deaths. By the 1800s,
only 70 for every 100,000 died in violent encounters. In
the 20th century, even with two world wars, a few mass
genocides, Stalin and the USSR, genocides in Germany
and Italy, wars in Vietnam, Korea, the middle East, and a
myriad of mass murders in multiple countries in the Afri-
can continent, the number of deaths from violence was 60
per 100,000 in population. In the last 25 years were down
to 3/10ths of one person per 100,000 people. And although
the number of wars has increased by 25%, theyve been
minor ones. The number of deadliest wars -- those that kill
at least 1,000 people a year -- has fallen by 78% since 1988
alone!
Government violence. Peace cometh. In 1946 there were
fewer than 20 democracies in the world. Fast forward to
2010, with almost 100 democratic countries in the world.
And the rate of genocides, that is number of masses of
populations being slaughtered, was 1,400 times higher in
1942 than in 2008 an amazing number. In 1976 there
were 90 authoritarian countries, now there are about 25 (as
of early 2011).
And terrorism? It generates fear, but not many deaths
9-11 was the exception, not the rule. Theres never been
so many deaths, before or since, from terrorism. News
of multiple terrorist incidents are broadcast frequently
(it sells), and its scary, but as a percent of violent deaths
worldwide terrorism accounts for few.
Murders & rape. Our everyday lives are less violent: In
the 1300s, 100 of 100,000 people were murdered in Eu-
ropean countries. In this century, 1 per 100,000 people.
Closer to home, in 1976 American wives murdered 1.2 of
100,000 husbands. Now, only .2 husbands of 100,000 men
face death-by-wife. For wives killed by husbands, the rate
was 1.4, and is now 0.8. Crime statistics show that rape in
the U.S. is down 80% since 1973.
Well, because were smarter. Why? One theory is that
people are smarter now, as shown from the continuous rise
in IQ levels among teens, up some 30% over 100 years.
And the smarter are more educated. The educated, with
more time and money, lead the push for helping hands, not
swords. So Pinker thinks.
Professional peacekeepers. But wasnt the 1990 decade
the worst in UN history? Not even close. Already in 1998
the United Nations disclosed statistics showed the world
becoming greatly, markedly less violent during just the
time the UN has existed. Why? UN ofcials credit UN
peacekeeping processes, the World Bank and thousands
of nongovernmental organizations pushing for peace - all
supported by the educated among them. Me? Like the au-
thor, Robert Fulghum, I believe in teachers, and that we all
learned in kindergarten that holding hands when we cross
the road is the most important way to safely get to the other
side.
