DONT TREAD LIGHTLY ON
WINTER TIRE SAFETY
(NewsUSA) - With winter upon us, tire
safety in cold weather is something every
car owner should be familiar with. Most
drivers concentrate on tire safety in hot
weather to avoid blowouts, but the same
precautions should be exercised in the
winter. One of the most effective ways to
be safe on the road is to use a winter tire
specially designed for cold weather.
Common all-season tires contain a tread
compound that gradually hardens when
temperatures dip below 45 degrees,
resulting in a decrease in traction. These
tires also tend to collect winter road debris,
like snow and ice, which can impact a
vehicles performance on wintry roads.
Mark Ballard, spokesman for Discount Tire
Company, Americas largest independent
tire and wheel retailer, advises motorists
to replace all four tires with winter tires if
they can expect to encounter snow and ice
during the winter months. Its best to use
winter tires, especially if you live in an area
with extreme weather conditions where
temperatures are below 45 degrees on a
consistent basis, he explains. Relying on
an all-season tire to do the work of a winter
tire can be dangerous to you and other
motorists.
In recent years, the Rubber Manufacturers
Association (www.rma.org) developed
new standards for winter traction, which
led to technological advancements in the
manufacture of winter tires. For example, a
newer tread compound featuring a higher
sillica content retains tire exibility even in
freezing temperatures, allowing the tread
to maintain its grip with the highway.
Also, tread block design has been greatly
improved with the addition of thousands
of sipes, small cuts in the tread block
that provide extra biting edges for more
traction.
Every aspect of todays winter tire has
been engineered to provide better traction
and greater ability to quickly expel water,
slush and snow, provide a quieter ride and
allow for longer tread life, says Ballard.
Winter tires tend to be slightly more
expensive than all-season ones. But like
all tires, winter tires perform optimally
when properly inated. Remember that a
signicant drop in temperature can lower
air pressure. Typically, a 10-degree drop will
cause tires to lose a pound of pressure.

www.tires.com.
HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
LEARN ABOUT STORYTELLING
AT FERRIS JOURNALISM
CONFERENCE
By Lauren Fitch
Pioneer Staff Writer
BIG RAPIDS Aspiring journalists gained
some insight into the industry at Ferris State
Universitys rst journalism conference on
Wednesday.
One hundred high schoolers from 11
Michigan schools and some of their
teachers attended the workshop, which
focused on lessons in storytelling.
This is meant to be a glimpse into
journalism and what all it means these days.
We want young people understanding the
role journalism plays in society, said Steve
Fox, adviser for the Ferris State Torch and
one of the events organizers. Everybody
can feel comfortable, whether they have
lots of experience or none. They can come
in and learn.
Fox partnered with Leah Nixon, interim
director of marketing client services at
Ferris, and Dave Clark, editor in chief
of the Pioneer, to provide sessions on
photography, sports writing, interviewing,
video, writing as a career and working on a
school newspaper.
Representatives from Ferris and the
Pioneer led each session. Ferris Ofce
of Admissions partnered in the event to
provide lunch, T-shirts and campus tours.
Any time admissions has the opportunity
for students to visit campus and learn
more about Ferris, were going to take that
opportunity, said Jason Daday, coordinator
of admissions event programming.
Its great to be able to partner with our
academic departments.
Many of the schools represented do not
have high school newspapers. Clark
recommended ways they could start their
own papers and stressed the importance of
making their student voice heard.
Big Rapids High School eliminated its
journalism program at the end of last
school year due to budget cuts. Teachers
John Caskey and Kristin Conley are trying
to start an after school group to replace the
program, and brought 10 students to the
conference.
We liked the options they gave the kids
for classes because they are new and
they dont know about storytelling or
interviewing, Caskey said. Because we
dont have (journalism) classes anymore,
were making a new start.
Mitchell Swaney, a senior from Tri County
High School, was interested in the
discussion on storytelling through video.
Storytelling is denitely a bigger deal than
people give it credit for, he said. A good
story needs to come rst.
Jared Aiken, a junior at Tri County High
School, is taking a Photoshop class this
semester and wanted to learn more about
journalism as he begins considering
potential careers.
A lot of journalism goes unrecognized with
all the hard work, he said.
Organizers hope to host the conference
again next year.
MAINTAINING PETS HEALTHY
GUMS TOO GREAT TO BE
IGNORED
(NewsUSA) - Smelly doggie breath can
be annoying. And dog owners will go to
great lengths to eliminate or cover it up.
But be aware -- pet oral care goes beyond
preventing bad doggie breath. Poor gum
health allows nasty bacteria to make a
beeline straight for a pets circulatory
system, which can have harmful effects on
vital organs.
Periodontal disease, the leading health
condition affecting three-fourths of dogs and
cats age three or older, is often the result of
pet owners not regularly providing at-home
oral care and veterinary assessments and
treatments. Plaque on pets teeth forms as
bacteria and food particles coat the teeth
and develop a biolm. If not cleaned off,
plaque irritates the gum line and can cause
gingivitis and harden on the tooth surface
to cause tartar. With more accumulation,
gingivitis may progress to periodontal
disease. Diseased gums can act as a
bacterial superhighway into the circulatory
system of the pet and may ultimately
adversely affect vital organs.
Gum disease, which research tells us
can affect more than just a pets mouth,
is initiated by plaque accumulating on
teeth and not being cleaned, said Dr.
Jan Bellows, veterinary dental specialist
and incoming president of the American
Veterinary Dental College. The good news
is every pet parent has the power to keep
their pets teeth clean and gums healthy.
It starts with daily at-home oral care with
brushing or Veterinary Oral Health Council
(www.vohc.org)-approved dental products.
And each pet should have a veterinary oral
exam at least annually with professional
cleanings as advised.
Pet owners will be thrilled to know that
Greenies Brand recently introduced
a canine dental chew that carries the
Veterinary Oral Health Seal of Acceptance
for reduction of plaque and tartar build-up
and is clinically proven to help maintain
healthier gums. These fth-generation
chews by Greenies use a highly palatable,
natural recipe with added vitamins and
minerals, are nutritionally complete and
balanced and are available in veterinary
clinics and pet specialty stores nationwide.

VALVE AND SENSING
TECHNOLOGY: PERFORMANCE
FROM THE INSIDE OUT
(NewsUSA) - Innovation is a term
companies use quite often. While many
companies are quick to brand themselves
as inventive, very few have the legacy
and pioneering spirit to be truly innovative.
But occasionally, a few great companies
manage to prove their claims of innovation
by successfully extending core technologies
into new elds and applications.
You may be grasping at air when you try to
explain valve and sensing technologies to a
friend. While many dont see or interact with
these technologies on a daily basis, they are
utilized in applications that many customers
and end-users use each and every day -;
and the roles these technologies play in
your everyday safety and comfort shouldnt
go unnoticed. One such valve and sensing
technology manufacturer, Schrader, takes
innovation seriously.
Since 1891, our valve and sensing
technology has played a critical safety
role within global automotive applications.
We invented the rst pneumatic tire
valve, the very same valve used on every
vehicle in the world today. More recently,
we pioneered tire pressure monitoring
systems (TPMS), now required on all new
vehicles in North America, and growing in
European and Asian-Pacic countries,
says Paul Wise, director of marketing at
Schrader. However, what differentiates
Schrader is our ability to extend these
foundational technologies to new markets
and applications.
For example, Schrader has been successful
in adapting its sensor technology to
monitor power transmission belts and
industrial hoses, which are found in
diverse applications for factory equipment,
construction, agriculture, robotics and other
markets as well.
Many of these applications are considered
capital equipment, meaning when the
piece of equipment is down because of a
broken belt or a burst hose, it translates
to a real operational cost to owners,
said Enda McCloskey, vice president of
technology, Schrader. Our new belt and
hose monitoring systems remove the
guess work about when to perform critical
maintenance.
Schrader valve and sensing technology
within automotive applications helps
to save lives, reduce fuel costs, and
reduce environmental impact via TPMS.
Additionally, Schraders continued history
of innovation has resulted in an all-electric
way to better measure fuel levels in gas
tanks as well as new ex fuel sensors for
hybrid vehicles -- its technology has even
expanded to the medical eld, including
oxygen monitoring for hospital and patient
environments.

EASY WAYS TO GIVE BACK
(NewsUSA) - There are people all over
the world who are struggling and in need
of help. One could be right next door.
While its not always possible to help out
nancially, or donate a large amount of time
to a cause, there are easy ways to perform
simple acts of kindness every day. Not only
does the person performing the good deed
feel great, but these small gestures add up
to make a big difference.
Contribute to the community with these
simple deeds:
* Gather gently used books. Contact
schools, libraries and other institutions,
such as hospitals and senior centers, to
see if books are needed. Involve a book
club or other community organization to
increase the donation.
* Call area schools and ask about
volunteering. Many schools are looking for
mentors and tutors. Depending on each
schools policy, sometimes volunteers
need to attend a short training session
before starting. For parents, lending time
to chaperone a eld trip is both fun and
rewarding.
* Consider donating blood through an
American Red Cross blood drive. The need
for blood is constant as approximately
every two seconds a patient in the United
States needs a blood transfusion. Just
one donation can save up to three lives.
After each donation, Red Cross donors
are treated to Keebler cookies, beverages
and other snacks as a way to say Thank
you for their act of kindness. To learn more
about the Be a Good Cookie. Get a Good
Cookie. campaign and for blood donation
eligibility, visit www.redcrossblood.org.

ENJOY A LITTLE TECH-FREE FAMILY
TIME
(NewsUSA) - Family dinners arent what
they used to be -- football games are
blaring in the foreground and parents must
remind children to turn off their phones,
and struggle to keep their own ngers from
itching to check their email.
Internet technology has caused family
dynamics to change rapidly across the
country. Family structures arent the same,
communication has been irrevocably
altered and family time doesnt look like it
used to.
Taking the initiative to bring families
closer together, The Company Store, now
celebrating its 100th anniversary, recently
announced the launch of the National
Family Pajama Night campaign slated for
the evening of Saturday, November 19,
2011. Inspired by the brands seasonal
collection of matching pajamas for the
entire family, National Family Pajama Night
is about creating an evening the children
will never forget.
With todays busy schedules, families
are challenged to squeeze in quality time
together between work commitments,
soccer practices and playdates. Our goal
in creating National Family Pajama Night is
to encourage families to put the focus back
on each other, by creating memories that
strengthen family ties, says Keith Hagood,
general manager of The Company Store.
By pledging their involvement, families
will begin receiving Idea of the Day tips
consisting of unique, fun activities for
their family night. Each pledge will also
help achieve the goal of The Company
Store donating $20,000 worth of pajamas
to children in need through the Pajama
Program organization.
Whether families engage in a treasure
hunt, doing tag team drawings, or making
a glow-in-the-dark mural, it is our hope
that National Family Pajama Night will
become an annual event that will continue
to ourish, says Hagood.
Families can pledge participation and get
ideas on how to create a memorable evening
together by visiting www.thecompanystore.
com/pjnight.
CUT HEATING COSTS BY
WINTERIZING YOUR HOME
(NewsUSA) - As Old Man Winter makes
his mighty push, 79 percent of Americans
expect to pay the same or more to heat
their homes as compared to last winter,
according to a recent survey by the Vent-
Free Gas Products Alliance, a section
of the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and
Refrigeration Institute (AHRI).
To save money on those heating bills,
though, homeowners can take steps now
to stay warmer and more comfortable this
winter. For example, caulking and extra
insulation are relatively inexpensive and
easy projects that will pay dividends all
winter.
Another way to cut home heating bills 20 to
35 percent is by installing a vent-free gas
replace or heater in the room you use most.
According to Sue Walker, chairwoman of
the AHRIs Vent-Free Gas Products Alliance
Section, this zone heating strategy allows
you to turn down the central furnace and
take advantage of the inherent efciency of
supplemental vent-free gas heating.
For every dollar you spend on gas using
a vent-free appliance, you get 99 cents
worth of heat in your living space, as these
products are 99 percent efcient, said
Walker.
Vent-free gas products have been around
for more than 30 years, according to
Walker. With more than 20 million units
installed in homes, they are time tested for
savings and safety.
Because a vent-free gas heating system
does not require tearing out walls to run vent
pipe, professional installation is surprisingly
inexpensive, fast and cost-effective.
For a home with an existing wood-burning
replace, converting it to a vent-free gas
log set or insert turns a messy, inefcient
system into a clean, hassle-free, highly
economical heat source. Environmentally
friendly vent-free appliances are heated
with natural gas or propane, among the
cleanest of all fossil fuels according to the
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Both gases are domestically abundant and
are secure sources of energy.
Clean-burning fuel and super efcient
operation -- that makes vent-free a truly
green heat source, said Walker.

In Michigan in 2010 there were 55,867
reported car-deer crashes with 11 mo-
torists killed and 1,277 injured. About
80 percent of all car-deer crashes take
place on two-lane roads between dusk
and dawn. (Of the reported car-deer
accidents Kent County is number one
and Montcalm County is number six in
the states highest accident rate).
What can you do?
Stay aware, awake, alert, and sober.
Remember, safety belts are your best
defense in any collision.
Be alert for deer in spring and fall,
especially at dawn and dusk.
Heed deer crossing and speed limit
signs, particularly on two-lane roads.
If a crash is unavoidable:
Dont swerve!
Brake rmly
Hold on to the steering wheel.
Stay in your lane.
Bring your vehicle to a controlled stop.
We at Hills Body Shop have noticed an increase in deer hits in the month of October through December
and a big surge directly after the end of Daylight Savings, because more people are still on the road at
sunset.
If you have had the misfortune of hitting a deer, Hills Body Shop, Inc. is here to help restore your ve-
hicle to its pre-accident condition. Your insurance company may refer you to one of their preferred
repair facilities. These body shops have an agreement with your insurance company to keep down the
cost of your vehicle repair in exchange for referrals. We believe its not in your best interest to take
your vehicle to these contracted repair shops. We believe safety and quality should come before cost,
whereas these preferred shops seem to put cost before quality and safety. We believe it to be unethi-
cal to cheapen your vehicle repair to save your insurance company money. Youre our customer, not
your insurance companys. Hills Body Shop, Inc. has always and will always provide the nest repairs
available.

a car-deer accident, please visit our website http://www.hillsbodyshop.com/

ATTENTION: Ford, Lincoln, Mercury
and Ford Truck Owners
Its a common misconception that only car dealerships can perform
the maintenance services on a new vehicle that is under warranty.
Clearly, consumers can have their maintenance done by their local
independent repair shop without affecting the warranty.
~The Car Care Council
