This activity was created 2011 by Mrs.

Robbie Case at Tuscaloosa County High School using questions on the Biology Project>>Mendelian Genetics website at http://www.biology.arizona.edu/mendelian_genetics/mendelian_genetics.html. It has been posted with permission. CASES QR QUEST There are 15 QR codes that I have generated and placed in the designated area. Your group will find as many as you can and complete the quest embedded within the QR code. Most are just genetics questions that your group will answer (some are more challenging than others). One is a link to a website that you will visit and answer 2 questions from, one is a video assignment, and one is a bonus just because you all know how much I love you! This is how the QR Quest works: 1. To start: Pull up Edmodo and DM me with your group members names. 2. You will find a QR code card and scan it using your app. It may take a bit of focusing and centering and getting the light just right. See me if you have a problem. 3. The scan will immediately provide the message I have hidden for you. 4. Work out the problem (or challenge). Also, write out how you completed the challenge, showing your work. You will turn this in at the end of the period. Make sure all members names are on it. You may use your textbook if you need to look anything up. 5. After completing all 15 quest challenges, pull up Edmodo and DM me the numbers of the QR ( this will be 1-15 written on the paper) and your answers (most will be a multiple choice letter or short answers) For the video challenge you may just DM we did it 6. GOOD LUCK!

Here are the rules and they will be STRICTLY enforced: 1. You may never go to a QR if a group is already there. Either find another one or wait a far distance away. 2. You may NOT speak loudly or misbehave. You will only use a voice that your group can hear. Keep conversation to a minimal. A portion of you grade will be based on your behavior and if one member loses points.you all will! One reprimand of any group member will result in 5 points off your grade. If you are reprimanded twice..YOU ARE DISQUALIFIED! I know it will be exciting different and fun, but be mature, responsible and VERY QUIET! 3. You may only use your smart phone for SCANNING the QR code and reading the challenge or going to Edmodo to submit your answers. No other use of the cell phone is allowed. You will not use sound so keep it on silent. Remember to turn it off and put away at the end of the period. 4. Be smart and savvyget as many of the challenges as you can on the quest. You must submit answers by way of Edmodo DM for them to count!! **Mrs. Case reserves the right to add any to or change any rules during the quest. Since this activity is brand new, adjustments may have to be made.and that is Mrs. Cases decision to make!! You guys are making history..it has never been done here before!** Good Luck!

These are the encoded quests for each QR code.

QR CODE 1 In pea plants, spherical seeds (S) are dominant to dented seeds (s). In a genetic cross of two plants that are heterozygous for the seed shape trait, what fraction of the offspring should have spherical seeds? A. None B. 1/4 C. 1/2 D. 3/4 E. All

QR CODE 2 Get flipcam from Case. Video the group scanning a QR code and answering it. Explain ALL you had to do in this activity. Best videos will be posted to class! QR CODE 3 A genetic cross between two F1-hybrid pea plants having yellow seeds will yield what percent green-seeded plants in the F2 generation? Yellow seeds are dominant to green. A. 0% B. 25% C. 50% D. 75% E. 100%

QR CODE 4 The QR code takes you to a website about the life of Gregor Mendel. Answer the following from the site: A. Mendels work was SO before its time.it appears that it took how many years for the rest of the scientific community to catch up to it? B. How long did it take to cross and score the plants? http://www.accessexcellence.org/RC/AB/BC/Gregor_Mendel.php

QR CODE 5 To identify the genotype of yellow-seeded pea plants as either homozygous dominant (YY) or heterozygous (Yy), you could do a test cross with plants of genotype _______. A. y B. Y C. yy D. YY E. Yy

QR CODE 6 When true-breeding tall stem pea plants are crossed with true-breeding short stem pea plants, all of the _________ plants, and 3/4 of the __________ plants had tall stems. Therefore, tall stems are dominant. A. F1, F2. B. G1, G2. C. parental, F2. D. F2, parental. E. P1, P2

QR CODE 7 What are the possible blood types of the offspring of a cross between individuals that are type AB and type O? (Hint: blood type O is recessive) A. AB or O B. A, B, or O C. A or B D. A, B, AB, or O E. A, B, or AB QR CODE 8 The gametes of a plant of genotype SsYy should have the genotypes: A. Ss and Yy B. SY and sy C. SY, Sy, sY, and sy D. Ss, Yy, SY and sy E. SS, ss, YY, and yy QR CODE 9 Which of the following genotypes would you not expect to find among the offspring of a SsYy x ssyy test cross: A. ssyy B. SsYy C. Ssyy D. ssYy E. SsYY

QR CODE 10 The expected phenotypic ratio of the progeny of a SsYy x ssyy test cross is: A. 9:3:3:1 B. 3:1 C. 1:1:1:1 D. 1:2:1 E. 3:1:1:3 QR CODE 11 In a dihybrid cross, AaBb x AaBb, what fraction of the offspring will be homozygous for both recessive traits? A. 1/16 B. 1/8 C. 3/16 D. 1/4 E. 3/4 QR CODE 12 A test cross is used to determine if the genotype of a plant with the dominant phenotype is homozygous or heterozygous. If the unknown is homozygous, all of the offspring of the test cross have the __________ phenotype. If the unknown is heterozygous, half of the offspring will have the __________ phenotype. A. dominant, incompletely dominant B. recessive, dominant C. dominant, epistatic D. codominant, complimentary E. dominant, recessive

QR CODE 13 DingDingDing!!!!! 5 bonus points to this challenge if you DM me with this years Homecoming Theme!!!

QR CODE 14 When true-breeding tall stem pea plants are crossed with true-breeding short stem pea plants, all of the _________ plants, and 3/4 of the __________ plants had tall stems. Therefore, tall stems are dominant. A. F1, F2. B. G1, G2. C. parental, F2. D. F2, parental. E. P1, P2

QR CODE 15 A genetic cross between two F1-hybrid pea plants for spherical seeds will yield what percent spherical-seeded plants in the F2 generation? (Recall, spherical-shaped seeds are dominant over dented seeds.) A. 100% B. 75% C. 50% D. 25% E. 0% All of the genetics questions were taken from the online quizzes from the site below: http://www.biology.arizona.edu/mendelian_genetics/mendelian_genetics.html

The following 15 pages are the QR Quest Cards that you will post in the designated Quest area. It is best to post them in a well-lit, very large area where you can observe all students. Also post the cards about eye-level.
