INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES Write your name, class and registration number on all the work you hand in. Write in dark blue or black pen on both sides of the paper. Do not use staples, paper clips, highlighters, glue or correction fluid. Answer both Section One and Section Two. At the end of the examination, fasten all your work securely together. All questions in this paper carry equal marks.

This question paper consists of 2 printed pages inclusive of the cover page.

2 PAPER ONE Answer both Section One and Section Two Section One [30 marks] You are advised to write between 350 and 500 words on one of the following topics. At the head of your compositions, write the number of the topic you have chosen.

1 Multi-tasking is an indication of efficiency and competency in our fast-paced and highly connected society. Do you agree?

2 Blogs, Facebook, Twitter and other new media are platforms for us to express our opinions publicly. However, Singaporeans seem ill-equipped to handle this sensibly. What are your views?

3 Write about a time when you had to face something or somebody new. 4 Time. 5 Would you take a gap year in your education to pursue something you are passionate about?

3 Section Two [30 marks] Begin your answer on a fresh page. You are advised to write between 250 and 350 words for this section. You should read the information carefully and plan your answer before beginning to write. Your school is planning an open house for potential new students. The school administration is drawing up the detailed programme for the event. As a student leader, you have been given feedback from last years open house visitors: Timing-October too late Few outdoor activities-very quiet Students on duty could not answer questions Good service attitude shown by staff Environment welcoming and pleasant Displays indoor attractive-showed holistic education Taking into account the above, you have to draw up a proposal for this years open house. You also have to consider the following: Theme or concept for entire event Other displays or highlights to add interest Competition from other schools also having open house

Write a letter to the Principal, clearly explaining how and why your suggestions will enhance interest in the open house. Set out your letter correctly in clear, accurate English, in a persuasive tone that will convince the Principal that your suggestions are the most comprehensive.
