Call for All India/Worldwide One day Fast and Demonstration on 5th Nov.2011 Call for All India/Worldwide One day Fast and Demonstration on 5th Nov.2011 Office of the Save Democracy Repeal AFSPA (Group) New Delhi Dated: 21-October- 2011 ALL INDIA FAST and Demonstration is being held on 5th November, 2011 in several cities in India. It is organized in support of 53 years of peoples struggle against AFSPA (ARMED FORCES SPECIAL POWERS ACT) and THE 11yrs LONG hunger strike by Irom Sharmila in peaceful protest against the draconian act. Many others have fought valiantly to fight against the oppressive dictates of the act. The mothers from Meira Paibi, Manipur staged a Naked Protest outside the Kangla Fort in protest against the rape of Manorma by the jawans of the Assam Riffles of the Indian Army in 2004. Chittaranajn, a student self-immolated himself in the strongest form of REBELLION to describe the extent of atrocities committed as a result of the act. On 5th November11 Sharmila will complete 10 years 11 months, 29 days, 23 hours, 59 minutes, 60 seconds and pledges to continue her silent but powerful form of protest till this black un-democratic act is repealed. Save Democracy Repeal AFSPA Group along with other democratic rights and human rights organization have come together to take forward the cause of Sharmila and the others who have been courageously fighting against the act, with the sole aim of re-instating democracy in all parts of India and to bring justice, peace and equality to each citizen of this country. These organizations include the likes of Coordination of Democratic Rights Organization, Saheli, National Alliance of Peoples Movement , Campaign for Peace & Democracy (Manipur), Manipur Students Association Delhi, Manipur women gun survivors network, Navnirman Smiriti (Yuva Bharath), Just Peace Foundation, All India Students Forum (AISF), All India students Association (AISA), Barak Human Right Protection committee, Assam, Janta Praja Samiti Kolkatta, Medinipuro Lodha Sabro Kalyan Samiti and many other civil society organizations pan-nation and some students organizations in North America (North American Manipur Association (NAMA)), Australia and Canada to. Our main single point objective is to repeal The Armed Forces Special Powers Act. War on people in any form is unacceptable and especially when the protector becomes the perpetrator is when violation is at its peak. SDRA group stands as a symbol of war against people. We have a firm resolve to keep all our demonstrations peaceful and thus most of our events comprise of inspirational talks by activists and intellectuals, powerful theatre acts depicting the story of lives in these affected areas, candle-light marches, and what was claimed to be the most powerful form of resistance, the FAST. Similarly, on 5th November11 we plan to conduct a day-long fast during the course of which strategies for strengthening the movement shall be discussed. Speeches by influential activists and professionals shall pave the way for democratic inclusion of ideas and suggestions. We have been able to receive confirmation from leading intellectuals and activists such as Mr Harsh Mander(social activist and writer), Gautam Navlakha( democratic rights activist), Mr Kuldeep Nayar(Senior Bureaucrat & Ex-Ambassador to US), Prof Bimol Akoijan (Prof JNU), Deepti Priya(Writer- Burning Bright), Uma Chakravarty(Prof Miranda House), Nandini Sundarman (Faculty, Delhi School of Economics), Vrinda Grover (Human Rights activist). Powerful play-acts by leading theatre artist, original compositions by amateur music bands, poetry recitals, followed by a grand spectacle of balloon and kite display shall be highlights of the day.
