Bournemouth Arts by the Sea Festival and Activate offer these delightful outdoor performances for Light Night 2011 on 24th and 25th September.This programme sees six new commissions of work by artists as well as some surprising street theatre around the Bournemouth Lower Gardens. Much of the work presented at this festival is new work for the outdoors by new and emerging companies, three of the pieces are premieres. Artist Biographies:
Roustabout Theatre Company
- My Secret Garden
Roustabout Theatre are a company based in the South West led by Toby Hulse, a director and playwright who specialises in making theatre for family audiences and in educational contexts. He has created work for theatres and companies across the UK, touring nationally and internationally. Inspired by the novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, Roustabout present My Secret Garden, produced by Theatre Bristol and Co-commissioned by The Tobacco Factory Theatre, Fuse Festival, 3 Foot High Peoples Festival, Winchester Hat Fair, Oxford Playhouse and Activate Performing Arts in partnership with Bournemouth Arts by the Sea Festival. The show invites the audience to enter a secret garden that can only be reached through a door hidden for many years. The long abandoned garden can be brought back to life, if we dig deep in the earth, and uncover the treasures that lie buried in the soil. A magical, muddy adventure for children aged two to five and their adults. Each show is approximately half an hour long starting from 10.45am throughout the day on September the 24th.

The Paper Cinema


- An Illuminated and Phantasmagoric Concise History of Bournemouths Most Eminent Victorians
The Paper Cinema is an illustrated song, a shadow, a smoke, a mirror, a puppet show, a cinema show, side show, magic show, a show and tell, a show off. It exists in the meeting of live music and moving drawings. What happens at the accidental meeting of inkblots, photocopies, cardboard, anglepoise lamps, the occasional table, video technology, a laptop and a banana box? The Paper Cinema are based in Dorset and are supported artists at Battersea Arts Centre. Specially commissioned for the Bournemouth Festival, The Paper Cinema presents an illuminating and fantastical story of the most eminent patrons of Bournemouths Victorian scene those who are commonly overlooked in other histories. This work will be located in the bandstand after dusk. The Paper Cinema have lovingly created this piece which incorporates beautiful illustrated projections and a specially written score.

Michele OBrien - The Spice Box


Street Theatre Storyteller Michele OBrienis a character actor who creates visual performances which take the listener on a journey into their own imagination. Michele OBrien created Pooles award-winning Granny Cousins Ghost Walk and is an experienced Drama Practitioner interested in working in the Early Years sector with story-telling. Michele is Poole based and travels internationally. The Spice Box is a one-woman show introducing the Tudor Spice Box: from a time when Spices were more valuable than gold. An intricate and interactive box full of Eastern promise and where treasures abound, The Spice Box was co-commissioned by Activate Performing Arts, Arts Bournemouth and Poole Arts Development Unit and is supported by Arts Council England. The Spice Box was part funded by a Bournemouth Arts Grant. The show can be seen at 11:30am at Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum and at 2:30pm in the Lower Gardens on the 24th. LissomLilt - Nous Voil


LissomLilt are a new company of graduating acting students from The Arts University College at Bournemouth. LissomLilts Nous Voil! is supported by Cirque Bijou and the Step Up programme as well as Activate Performing Arts in partnership with Bournemouth Arts by the Sea Festival. Nous Voila! follows the day-to-day life of a group of wayfaring clowns as they make their way through the world. They make a living from their impromptu tours wherever they find themselves making camp. This is the first full piece of street theatre that this exciting new company have created (and can be seen throughout the day on 24 September from 11am to 5pm.) Web: www.lissomlilt.co.uk

Ramshacklicious - The Small Time


Ramshacklisious Theatre Company is the playground of siblings, Holly and Jack Stoddart. They have toured street theatre festivals around the UK, Ireland and Europe since 2006 with their anarchic blend of character and comedy, storytelling and puppetry. Holly and Jack collaborate with other truly amazing artists from many different disciplines. The Ramshaklicious devising process is exploratory and playful and always produces high quality, accessible yet subversive physical musical comedy theatre for non-theatre spaces. The company is based in the South West region. The Small Time introduces Maud, Godfrey and Clement who proudly present The Smallest Traveling Vaudeville Show In The World!Mountedon their musical tricycle, towing behind their tiny theatre, they search out people to entertain with theirabsurd and bizarre array of variety acts. (Their show is at 1.30pm and 4pm on Saturday 24 September.)

Jessie Percival - Following the White Rabbit


Jessie is an emerging artist living in the South West. Along with LissomLilt, Jessie is supported by Cirque Bijou and the Step Up programme as well as Activate Performing Arts in partnership with Bournemouth Arts by the Sea Festival. Jessie has based this work on the white rabbit from Alice in Wonderland. Aware of time, rabbits go in search of the rabbit hole. Popping up from different locations the white rabbits infiltrate the festival. (See the rabbit throughout the day from 12 midday to 4pm) Web: www.followingthe.blogspot.com

Public Attraction
- Valerie Walkers Walking Tour of Bournemouth
Public Attraction is a theatre company who use physical comedy, improvisation and live music to take people on unique and exciting journeys. With a passion for people, places and all things peculiar, they are determined to get audiences bottoms off seats and into the playful world outside of the auditorium! Public Attraction is an emerging company based on the South Coast, where they are currently an Associate Artist at The Point, Eastleigh. They work closely with various community groups to tell the stories and visions of local people. Public Attractions delightful tour guide Valerie Walker collaborates with musicians The Lucky Ones to create an un-missable alternative tour of Bournemouths seafront and Lower Gardens. (Each tour is around 45 minutes long at 11am/1pm & 3pm on 24/25 September, and starts at Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum)
