Minico Anti-Foul Language Campaign

It is the intent of the Minico High School administration to support teachers in the area of classroom behavior and student discipline. It is our belief that students, teachers and coaches must be responsible for all their actions while in attendance at school and school activities. Students, teachers and coaches must show respect to those around them and act responsibly. We will take back our hallways, gymnasiums, athletic fields, classrooms, etc. by not permitting foul language, profanity, name calling, put downs, etc. Use of profanity is unacceptable and students, teachers and coaches will be disciplined accordingly. Students, teachers and coaches referred to the office for violation of profanity rule will receive appropriate consequences, which may include for teachers and coaches reprimand, suspension and possible dismissal; and for students it may include detention, in school or out of school suspension, school/community service and/or expulsion. Consistency is the key. Every swearword must be addressed immediately. If a student says I dont think thats a swearword, we say, In this school it is. We are not only addressing profanity, but we also address any language that is not kind or positive. We dont talk like that to each other. At the beginning of the 2011-12 school year, Minico has made a real and viable effort to constantly remind the students of this campaign. We want to instill this practice as a habit not just a new rule. We are also instilling the importance of acknowledging kind acts and praise them when they use kind words. Student council and the administration will design a reward system for supporting and following the district Anti-Foul Language policy. The advisory will work with students in advisory to develop a positive atmosphere and a plan to increase awareness of foul language, profanity, name calling, put downs, etc. We will gather data regarding these offenses through power school and surveys to determine if the behaviors are occurring less and if the behaviors are being dealt with. We will be looking at circumstances, people, and practices and triggers. We will make public service announcements to reinforce this campaign. Jeane Kirkpactrick said it best when addressing the Anti-Defamation League in 1982, Words can destroy. What we call each other ultimately becomes what we think of each other and it matters. At Minico High School IT does matter.
