The Cell Theory

All living things are made up of cells. Cells are the smallest working units of all living things. All cells come from preexisting cells through cell division.

Definition of a Cell

A cell is the smallest unit that is capable of performing life functions.

Two types of Cells

Prokaryotic Do not have structures surrounded by membranes Few internal structures One-celled organisms, Bacteria

The cell membrane

Outer boundary of the cell. It controls everything that enters and leaves the cell. It is composed of a double layer of phospholipids and proteins (aka lipid bilayer)

The cytoplasm

The cytoplasm is a jelly like substance that is made mostly of H2O. It also contains salts and organic molecules and enzymes. It is important because it contains all of the cells organelles.

The nucleus

The nucleus is the control center of the cell. It controls everything that occurs in the cell. For example, when the cell eats & reproduces. It contains the cells DNA.

Cells contain small structures that perform specific tasks. The Organelles act like little organs with the cell. They control how a cell get energy, transports, makes proteins, etc.

The Mitochondria

The mighty mitochondria. These are the powerhousesof a cell. The mitochondria turn food into useable energy for the cell.

The Golgi Apparatus

It looks like a stack of pancakes. Its function is to collect and package, and distribute molecules made within the cell. The Golgi Apparatus is like a factory.

The Endoplasmic Reticulum

The transportation system of the cell. Cells have smooth E.R., which has no ribosomes and rough E.R. which has ribosomes. The E.R. divides the cell into compartments and channels molecules through the cells interior, like a highway. Keep reading

The ribosomes

The ribosomes are the site of protein synthesis. Proteins are the building blocks of DNA. Ribosomes are made in the nucleolus, which is located inside the nucleus. Ribosomes contain the tools to construct proteins. They are found on the E.R. or floating in cytoplasm

Located in the nucleus. Ribosomes are made in the nucleouls.

The lysosomes

The lysosomes are intracellular digestive centers. The lysosomes contain enzymes that breakdown molecules inside the cell. They recycle old and worn out cell parts. They are considered the suicide sacs.
