Electrical Load Values

The load values listed below have been obtained from a number of hospital sources and appear indicative of typical values used on UK projects. BPG accepts no responsibility for projects, which may use these values as a basis for design.

Example No. 1
Compiled with information supplied by ITU Consultant and Medical Technical Officers Areas under consideration for electrical requirements: ICU Cardiac Surgical Intensive Care Main Theatres Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) ENT Theatres Paediatric Theatres and ICU (PICU)

Electrical Requirements for Main Theatres, General Recovery, CSICU

a) Cardiac Theatres - 12 Sockets per pendant Approx. Load Current 4.0A (peak) 1.5A 5.0A 8.0A 3.5A 2.0A 1.6A 0.2A 0.3A (total) 3.0A 25.0A b) Cardiac Surgical ICU 10 Sockets per bed 5.75KVA/theatre.

Equipment Required Diathermy Surgical Suction Heart/Lung Machine Sarns Heater/Cooler (for patient circulation) Merlin Monitor CATO Ventilator Defibrillator Volumetric Pump Syringe Pumps x 3 IABP/Centrifugal Pump

Assumed to be twin 13A/240V plus 1 additional twin 13A/240V socket per every two beds. Equipment Required Life Support/Ventilator (no humidifier) Merlin Monitor Defibrillator Volumetric Pump Syringe Pumps x 4 IABP/Centrifugal Pump/Overhead Warmer Approx. Load Current 2.0A 3.5A 1.6A 0.2A 0.4A (total) 4.0A 11.9A 2.73KVA/bed.

The additional sockets are to provide the provision of connection of Heart/Lung Machine + Heater/Cooler of 8A+5A=13A

c)

Thoracic Theatre - 10 x Sockets (6 on medical gas pendants, 4 on theatre walls) 1 of 6

Approx. Load Current 2.0A 3.5A 0.6A 3.0A (total) 4.0A (peak) 0.4A (total) 5.0A 19.6A 4.5KVA/theatre

d)

General Theatre Approx. Load Current 4.0A 3.5A 1.5A 1.6A 0.2A (total) 10.8A 2.484KVA/theatre

Equipment Required 4 sockets required for Monitor/ Ventilator Diathermy Surgical Suction Defibrillator IV devices

e)

General Recovery Approx. Load Current 3.5A 0.5A 0.2A (total) 5.0A 9.2A 2.116KVA/bed

Equipment Required Merlin Monitor Pulse Oximeter IV devices Patient Warming System

f)

Special Care Baby Unit

No specific loads were provided, just a list of equipment and the statement that a minimum of 12 sockets per cot are required with a preference for 16 sockets supplied from essential/UPS source to provide essential life support. Equipment Required 1 1 1 1-2 1 Neonatal Ventilator Ventilator Humidifier Vital Signs Monitor Volumetric Pumps Up to 6 Syringe Pumps

Accepting that syringe pumps and volumetric pumps have integral batteries. Note: Battery charge / life cannot be guaranteed.

g) ICU Load Test

Electrical Load Values

Load measurements of 23KVA were taken on a 14 bedded area with 10 beds occupied. Circuits fed other than just bed head sockets. The conclusion was that bed head socket consumption was in the order of 2KVA/Bed.

Conclusions
Based on the above figures it would suggest that typical power requirements are as follows: Cardiac Theatre Thoracic Theatre General Theatre Cardiac Intensive Care General Recovery Neo Natal Unit ENT Theatres 7.0KVA/theatre 5.0KVA/theatre 2.5KVA/theatre 3.0KVA/bed 2.5KVA/bed 3.0KVA/bed 5.0KVA/theatre

Paediatric Theatres/ICU Theatres ICU 5.0KVA/theatre 3KVA/bed

Optimum Isolation Transformer Size The optimum transformer size, taking into account cost, flexibility and reserve is 8KVA. Typically this size would be used for every theatre to ensure sufficient power is available in the event that the duties are changed in an emergency.

Normally the anaesthetic room is supplied from the theatre IPS system. In one particular theatre with this information two IPS system were installed, one of which was complete with a no-break UPS with 2 hours full load battery support.

Intensive Care Society

Electrical Load Values

This society produces their own standards for use in conjunction with the HTMs. These do not refer to any load figures, but specify 24 sockets per bed for ICU areas and refer to the requirements for Safety Power Supplies (essential) with minimum voltage levels and maximum changeover times on loss of main supplies.

Conclusions There is a wide range of medical equipment in use both old and new these of course influence the equipment load currents quoted by the various hospitals for individual items of equipment. In addition the different procedures undertaken in theatres also affect the theatre power requirements. In the vast majority of theatre installations we have supplied, a single 8KVA transformer has been sufficient for both theatre and it's anaesthetic room, whereas for Example No.3, we had to supply two 8KVA IPS systems. ITU/ICU/HDU bed loading requirements also span a wide band, 3KVA per bed seems not untypical, but some diversity is used when sizing a large area.
