A toast to a successful Wine Auction
With thanks to all our donors and bidders, KRCB just completed an energetic and successful live broadcast of the Bay Area Wine and Epicurean Auction. During two weekends in October, KRCB exceeded fundraising expectations in support of Public Television right here in the North Bay. This year, with our expanded ability to reach households in the South and East Bay, KRCB introduced a whole new audience to the opportunity to bid on fine wines from Napa, Sonoma, and Marin counties. Online bidding, which began on October 1st, ensured that everyone had ample opportunity to get an advance look at some of the best auction items. This year, those items included a Bocce, Wine, Food and Friends package from Trinchero where one lucky bidder was able to win a unique event in which the Trinchero Family opened their new Wine and Food Center to eight guests for an evening of world-class wines, a seasonal feast and bocce ball. Clouds Rest Estate Vineyards provided a Rare Library vertical case of 2002 through 2007 Pinot Noirs that included two bottles of each vintage. Sunce Winery of Santa Rosa provided a Private Winemakers Dinner for four, hosted by the vintners along with a case of 2009 Zoras Estate Pinot Noir. Kosta Browne Winery of This Sonoman LifeIra Glass, creator of Sebastopol made available two magnums of public radios This American Life, offered insights into the production of his program, Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast and Russian and the possibilities of storytelling with River Valley, in etched & signed bottles sound, in a sold-out appearance at the Wells with a VIP tour & tasting at the Winery. Fargo Center for the Arts in Santa Rosa Nov. If you missed the chance to bid on these 6. The gracious (and tall!) items, our next on-air and online aucradio host also met with tion will be held in April 2012. This will a small group of KRCB be a Travel and Leisure Auction in which supporters and staff before packages will focus on travel destinations, the presentation, includaccommodations, and fun adventures for ing Radio 91 Program everyone. Whats happening at KRCB?

KRCB hosts a wine tasting happy hour for GoLocal

KRCB North Bay Media is the EXCLUSIVE GoLocal broadcast member. To honor and celebrate the mission of GoLocal, KRCB hosted a wine tasting and happy hour event on Friday, October 14. This was the first night of our Wine and Epicurean Auction. We had wine donated from the Dry Creek Winery and some appetizers from Pearson & Company. There were tours of the broadcast facility and new master control suite. GoLocal attendees got to see live television at work in our studio with the Auction in full swing. Remember, locally owned businesses, retail stores, and restaurants help to make our community unique. Support them! A dollar spent at a local independent business, on average, generates at least three times more direct local economic benefit than a dollar spent at a corporate-owned chain.

The consortium of California Public Television (CPT) stationsof which KRCBs President and CEO, Nancy Dobbs, is the President has been awarded a coveted grant from the California Mental Health Services Authority. In light of our communitys growing concerns about mental health services and care, the grant comes at an opportune time. With this funding, CPT will produce a documentary aimed at reducing the stigma and discrimination associated with mental illness throughout California. In addition to producing and airing the documentary, the stations and partners will conduct a vigorous public outreach and education campaign on this subject, beginning mid-2012. The project is funded through Prop. 63, the Millionaires Tax passed by California voters some six years ago. KRCB is extremely proud to have helped to make this important work a reality. Dear Member, Once again, KRCB has been selected as one of a very small pool of stations to take part in a national project. NPR has selected 13 stations from across the country to participate in a pilot project on planned giving and gift annuities over the next year. Planned giving is emerging as a very important way in which loyal supporters of the station can have a lasting supportive influence on the success of KRCB. You may have noticed on KRCB a series of thank you spots expressing our appreciation to individuals who have made such a long term gift. There are details at krcb.org/planned-giving. By the way, thanks to our fantastic donors, The Bay Area Wine and Epicurean Auction, exceeded our goal. Congratulations to the successful bidders and thanks to our great auction staff and volunteers. Have a happy and safe holiday season. Nancy Dobbs President and CEO

Climate One: Biofuels, building plans, and BP

December 1 Drop In, Scale Up? Solazymes successful IPO indicates investors are bullish on synthetic fuels made from algae and other sources that can be used in regular vehicles today with minimal technological or behavioral modifications. Such drop in fuels have a huge advantage over electric cars because they leverage existing capital investment in cars and distribution infrastructure. But can they really go mainstream and displace petroleum at scale?
Harrison Dillon of Solazyme December 8 Saltworks and Beyond? Is the proposal to build 12,000 homes on Cargills salt ponds in Redwood City an example of smart growth, or just dirty old development? Peter Calthorpe and other supporters say it will preserve half of the former wetlands, provide funds for needed transit and reduce greenhouse gases by putting housing closer to jobs. David Lewis and other opponents say it will destroy sensitive habitat, cause freeway congestion and create other headaches.

December 15 Beyond Petroleum: Lessons from The Gulf of Mexico How much safer is offshore oil drilling 18 months after the Deepwater Horizon plunged into the sea on Earth Day 2010? The presidents commission found systemic problems with industry practices and regulatory oversight. Well explore what recommendations have been implemented and what else needs to be done to power the U.S. economy while transitioning to safer and cleaner forms of energy. December 22 Beyond Petroleum: Navy Seals Leading the Charge The U.S. military has ambitious plans to reduce its dangerous dependence on oil and other fossil fuels. Can the buying power of the Pentagon drive innovation in new energy technologies and create markets? December 29 U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley (left) America should wean itself from foreign oil and invest in clean energy technologies and infrastructure. Join us for a broad conversation about what Congress could do to promote electric cars, create jobs and spur development of biofuels from forests and agricultural lands. Thursdays at 7 pm

Literary Wednesdays
A Novel Idea: Haslam on Hayakawa In Thought and Action, the Enigmatic Life of S. I. Hayakawa, an intimate and detailed biography of this remarkable man, has just been published by University of Nebraska Press. Co-authors Gerald and Janice Haslam have done a magnificent work in telling his story, drawing on interviews with friends and family members, as well as Hayakawas own papers and journals. Even those who know a great deal about Hayakawa are sure to find some surprises here. One of the most gripping images from the 1960s captures the slight figure of Dr. Hayakawa scrambling onto a sound truck parked in front of San Francisco State College amid campus unrest. Hayakawa had hoped to use this soapbox to address the assembled demonstrators, but instead he ended up ripping out speaker wires and halting an illegal campus demonstrationor denying first-amendment rights to the crowd, depending on your perspective. Gerald Haslam, well known to KRCB listeners, is professor emeritus at Sonoma State University, and the author and editor of numerous books, several of them co-authored with Janice Haslam. Gerald Haslam will be the featured guest of host Rosemary Manchester on A Novel Idea, Wednesday, December 14, at 7 pm WordTemple: T. S. Eliot and Dylan Thomas This month on WordTemple, host Katherine Hastings gives a brief introduction to T. S. Eliot, one of the most innovative poets of the 20th century, and then plays him reading The Waste Land. This poem was despised by William Carlos Williams (I felt at once that it had set me back twenty years) and revered by his younger admirers for embodying and dissecting the malaise of our time. Then, sit back and enjoy Dylan Thomas reading his most beloved short story, A Childs Christmas in Wales. All this, and more, on WordTemple! Wednesday, December 21 at 7 pm

The best of times on E-town in December

December 5 Shawn Mullins / Cloud Cult We welcome back Atlanta-based singer/songwriter Shawn Mullins (rt). Shawn is one of our favorite artists. Hes been with us several times, and this time is one of the best. Also joining us in the stellar rebroadcast is the Minnesota group Cloud Cult, bringing their own original songs, full of orchestral rock and harmonic dissonance, as well as themes of loss and redemption. December 12 Tori Amos / Loudon Wainwright III In this encore airing from the Grand Ballroom in NYC, we feature virtuoso pianist and singer Tori Amos. Tori brings lovely, stripped down eclectic tunes from her recent seasonal CD. Also joining us is legendary singer-songwriter Loudon Wainwright III. December 19 Indigo Girls / Tim OBrien Holiday Show This week we welcome back one of our favorite groups, the Indigo Girls (rt). The duo will play some familiar hit favorites as well as music from their seasonal CD Holly Happy Days. And Tim OBrien, Grammy winning singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist is back with us as well. December 26 Mark OConnor/ Matt Wertz Grammy Award-winning composer and violin virtuoso Mark OConnor and his band Hot Swing! provide a special Christmas set. Mark began as a child prodigy and is considered one of the most prominent violinists and composers in the world. Theres more seasonal music to be had when popular newcomer Matt Wertz takes the stage to share songs from his recent release, Snow Glove. Hes enjoyed a well-deserved rise in attention due in part to having several of his original songs featured on numerous television shows and movies. Mondays at 7 pm

KRCB Volunteer of the Month Ray Johnson

Its been over a month since the last board for the 2011 KRCB Wine & Epicurean Auction closed; over 600 lucky bidders were able to secure unique and fine wines for their personal collections. Once again KRCB has many people to thank, from generous donors to tireless volunteers. We are grateful to those organizations that bring teams of volunteers to help out. One such organization that deserves special mention is Sonoma State University and the individual we want to feature as this months Volunteer of the Month is Ray Johnson, Director of the Wine Business Institute at SSU. Sonoma State is the firstand still the onlyacademic institution in the United States offering an MBA program in the wine industry. Ray started his career in the field as a tour guide for a Napa winery. He then joined the fundraising team and sold wine throughout the state and began to write a wine blog (something he hasnt had time to continue in his current position). With his background and passion for wines, as well as foodhe and his wife love to cook and they bottle their own wineRay was able to give would-be bidders inside information on auction items. His expertise helped make the KRCB Wine and Epicurean Auction a unique fundraising event by also making it an opportunity to learn more about the many different kinds of wines that are produced not just locally but in France, Italy, Chile, as well as throughout California. KRCB is fortunate to have volunteers like Ray (and the students he brought with him who quickly earned a 90+ point ranking as some of the most enthusiastic volunteers in the confirmation department!). Next spring Ray has offered to volunteer again at the KRCB Travel and Leisure and Wine Auction; but this time you wont just hear his voice, you will get to know him as one of our auction hosts. Kudos to the Wine Business Institute at Sonoma State University and a big thank you to Ray Johnson for his role in making the 2011 Wine and Epicurean Auction such a big success! If you are interested in being an auctioneer or live on-air host please contact Cheryl Scholar, Volunteer Manager, at 707-584-2005. If you are part of an organization that would like to bring a team of volunteers call now to reserve your night.
