hy Alternative Medicine ?

many people turn to alternative medicine for many

sickness and overall wellness, even though they may not
be scientifically proven to work

• Years of observations and use have proven the

alternatives medicines can be effective remedies for
many problems.

What is The Difference between
Alternative and Complementary
medicine?
Complementary medicine
•is used together with conventional medicine.
•An example of a complementary therapy is using aromatherapy to
help lessen a patient’s discomfort following surgery.

Alternative medicine
•is used in place of conventional medicine this field includes “folk”
medicine.
•An example of an alternative therapy is using a special diet to treat
cancer instead of undergoing surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy that
has been recommended by a conventional doctor.

Fear of surgery and of the side effects of drugs alienates many
people from conventional medicine.

• "Alternative" practitioners often encourage their patients to

be hopeful even when the situation is hopeless

• Many people believe that what is natural is necessarily better

and safer than what is artificial

• Finally, many doctors of conventional medicine treat

diseases first and people secondly.

Rheumatoid arthritis does
not only involve the joints - it has
other features, often described
as "flu-like" symptoms.
These are called systemic features which are:
• Tiredness and lack of energy.
• Loss of appetite, inability to sleep and low fever.
There are three main ways of treating rheumatoid arthritis:
 Taking care of your joints after having rheumatoid through:

a- Balancing rest and exercise, use your muscles and joints without
harming them. This helps retain movement.
b- Protecting your joints, protect your joints from unnecessary strain
c- Swimming is best exercise, the muscles can be exercised with minimal
strain on the joints as water supports your weight

 Treatment with drugs by:

• Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
• Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs).
• Biological response modifiers.
• Corticosteroids.
• Non-drug treatments include physical therapy; exercise Programs

 Surgery This is occasionally needed.

• Preparations made from botanicals
(plants and their products, including herbs)

• Other products taken by mouth, such as fish oil

• Preparations applied to the skin,

such as balms and liniments

• Hydrotherapy

• Mind-body therapies such as relaxation techniques,

meditation, prayer for health purposes, and tai chi

• Massage: is often very soothing and relaxing therapists manipulate muscle

and connective tissue to enhance function of those tissues and promote
relaxation and well-being.

• Aromatherapy: involves the use of essential oils (extracts or essences)

from flowers, herbs, and trees to promote health and well-being
Acupuncture
Acupuncture is one of the oldest,
most commonly used medical
procedures in the world.

Originating in China more than

2,000 years ago,

The term acupuncture describes a family of procedures

involving stimulation of anatomical points on the body by a
variety of techniques.

The acupuncture technique involves penetrating the skin with

thin, solid, metallic needles that are manipulated by the hands
or by electrical stimulation.
Leukemia is the name used to describe
a group of blood diseases, more
specifically, disorders of the tissues that
manufacture blood, especially the bone
marrow.
In leukemia, abnormal and immature
white blood cells are produced.
• There are several types of leukemia and these are four major types of
leukemia, depending on:

the type of white blood cell affected and the speed of progression.

• Blood cells in the bone marrow form from two major groups of stem
cells: the myeloid stem cell line and the lymphoid stem cell line.

Myeloid stem cell line develops into red blood cells, platelets, and
certain kinds of white blood cells
The lymphoid stem cell line develops into a kind of white blood cell
called lymphocytes.

Coughing, shortness of breath
An enlarged, painless testicle
Difficulty maintaining balance
Blurred vision
Seizures, vomiting
Poor healing of minor cuts
What makes one person more likely to
develop leukemia than another person?
Unfortunately the specific cause of leukemia
is unknown. There are several suspected
factors that may cause leukemia
• Suspected Environmental Risks:

• Smoking--about 20 percent of adult acute

leukemia cases are related to smoking.

• High doses of radiation, produced by an

atomic bomb or a nuclear reactor accident.

• Long-term exposure to benzene, found in

Gasoline increase the probabilities 20 times .

• Exposure to electromagnetic fields

(a type of low-energy radiation that comes
from power lines and electric appliances).
• Genetic Risks:
Immune system deficiencies--People are more at risk
when they have a decreased ability to resist foreign
cells.

Downs syndrome--children born with Downs are

twenty times more likely to develop acute leukemia.

• Viral risks:
Viruses may cause leukemia in animals, but in
humans this only occurs with rare types of leukemia—
very uncommon.
