John Harvey Kelloggs New Theology I have compiled quotes from letters that John Harvey Kellogg and

some of our pioneers that clarify what was really going on with the alpha of deadly heresies as Ellen White termed it. Many people think that John Kellogg was just teaching pantheism but this is only the after effect of his change in belief from the truth about the Godhead to a new faith that Ellen White identified as giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils and departing from the faith. I am sure that anyone who will study the alpha will see what John Kellogg was really teaching and as Ellen White warned that we must do this to avoid falling when the omega of deadly heresies came into our church as she prophesied. This first quote is from John Kellogg in 1880 to show what he and every single one of our pioneers as well as Ellen White believed and taught from 1844 to well after Ellen White passed away. It is important to see that Kellogg was in harmony with the teachings of the SDA church up until the alpha crisis because it shows that it was John Kellogg that changed what he believed about God and Christ and this is what caused the false teachings that manifested in (The Living Temple). I will let his own words and the testimonies of the pioneers identify what he started teaching. (All bold and Underline are not from the original but I added them to show the key points and all yellow highlighted statements are my comments.) The only grounds upon which our reviewer could be justified in making such a statement would be the supposition on his part that we believe in the doctrine of the trinity; but he very well knows, from positions taken and arguments used in previous articles, that we do not agree with him on this subject any better than on that of the nature of the soul. (J. H. Kellogg, Review and Herald, November 25th 1880, Reply to Eld. Wardners rejoinder) We believe in but one Deity, God, who is a unity, not a compound being. (Ibid) We repel the charge of trinitarianism without the slightest hesitation. We do not believe in a triune God, as before remarked. And we will not, as did our reviewer in a, former article, leave the reader in doubt as to our position on this point. We are utterly at a loss to comprehend how our reviewer could have blundered so strangely as to suppose us to share in so gross an error as we believe the orthodox doctrine of the trinity to be. (J. H. Kellogg, Review and Herald, November 25th 1880, Reply to Eld. Wardners rejoinder)
This is just one of many quotes from Kellogg that shows what he and the SDA church taught and believed until the alpha crisis but he came to change his belief in the early 1900s and this is what brought the counsel from Ellen White. Ever since the council closed I have felt that I should write you confidentially regarding Dr Kelloggs plans for revising and republishing The Living Temple. He (Kellogg) said that some days before coming to the council, he had been thinking the matter over, and began to see that he had made a slight mistake in expressing his views. He said that all the way along he had been troubled to know how to state the character of God and his relation to his creation works He then stated that his former views regarding the trinity had stood in his way of making a clear and absolutely correct statement; but that within a short time he had come to believe in the trinity and could now see pretty clearly where all the difficulty was, and believed that he could clear the matter up satisfactorily. He told me that he now believed in God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost; and his view was that it was God the Holy Ghost, and not God the Father, that filled all

space, and every living thing. He said if he had believed this before writing the book, he could have expressed his views without giving the wrong impression the book now gives. I placed before him the objections I found in the teaching, and tried to show him that the teaching was so utterly contrary to the gospel that I did not see how it could be revised by changing a few expressions. We argued the matter at some length in a friendly way; but I felt sure that when we parted, the doctor did not understand himself, nor the character of his teaching. And I could not see how it would be possible for him to flop over, and in the course of a few days fix the books up so that it would be all right. Letter: A G Daniells to W C White. Oct 29. 1903 page 1.2. It was John Kellogg that attempted to introduce the trinity teaching into our church during the early 1900s and started to believe in God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost. The trinity was rejected by every pioneer as well as Ellen White for there entire lifetimes as SDA and the terms (God the Son) and (God the Holy Spirit) cannot be found anywhere in the Bible or the writings of the Spirit of Prophecy, not once will you find these terms in Ellen White writings. I cannot emphasis this enough. Kellogg started to teach and believe that the Holy Spirit was not the personal presence of the Father and the Son as the Bible and SOP teach, but that the Holy Spirit is a separate being in his own right. These false ideas destroy the personality of the Father and the Son as Ellen White stated during this crisis. This teaching also violates the first commandment as we have only one God, The Father. Dr. Kellogg wrote to G. I. Butler defending The Living Temple in these words. As far as I can fathom, the difficulty which is found in The Living Temple, the whole thing may be simmered down to this question: Is the Holy Ghost a person? You say no. I had supposed the Bible said this for the reason that the personal pronoun he is used when speaking of the Holy Ghost. Sister White uses the pronoun he, and has said in as many words that the Holy Ghost was the third person of the godhead. How the Holy Ghost can be the third person and not be a person at all is difficult for me to see. J. H. Kellogg to G. I. Butler, October 28, 1903. Here we see that Kellog was trying to use the very statements of Ellen White to support his new theology by quoting her statement about the third person of the godhead to support the idea that the Holy Spirit was an individual being as are God the Father and his only begotten Son Jesus. The most amazing part is that today we have ministers and leaders using the exact same statements in our day to try to support the same idea that Kellog was advocating in the alpha. Ellen White predictions have come true to the letter. She stated that Kellog was taking those few statements out of there connection with all her other writings to support this new idea that Satan was pressing upon his mind. I am compelled to speak in denial of the claim that the teachings of "Living Temple" can be sustained by statements from my writings. There may be in this book expressions and sentiments that are in harmony with my writings. And there may be in my writings many statements which, taken from their connection, and interpreted according to the mind of the writer of "Living Temple," would seem to be in harmony with the teachings of this book. This may give apparent support to the assertion that the sentiments in "Living Temple" are in harmony with my writings. But God forbid that this sentiment should prevail. {SpTB02 53.3} Few can discern the result of entertaining the sophistries advocated by some at this time. But the Lord has lifted the curtain, and has shown me the result that would follow. The spiritualistic theories regarding the personality of God, followed to their logical conclusion, sweep away the whole Christian economy. They estimate as nothing the light that Christ came from heaven to give John to give to His people. They teach that the scenes just before us are not of sufficient importance to be given special attention. They make of no effect the truth of heavenly origin, and rob the people of God of their past experience, giving them instead a false science. {SpTB02 54.1}

In a vision of the night I was shown distinctly that these sentiments have been looked upon by some as the grand truths that are to be brought in and made prominent at the present time. I was shown a platform, braced by solid timbers,-- the truths of the Word of God. Some one high in responsibility in the medical work was directing this man and that man to loosen the timbers supporting this platform. Then I heard a voice saying, "Where are the watchmen that ought to be standing on the walls of Zion? Are they asleep? This foundation was built by the Masterworker, and will stand storm and tempest. Will they permit this man to present doctrines that deny the past experience of the people of God? The time has come to take decided action." {SpTB02 54.2} The enemy of souls has sought to bring in the supposition that a great reformation was to take place among Seventh-day Adventists, and that this reformation would consist in giving up the doctrines which stand as the pillars of our faith, and engaging in a process of reorganization. Were this reformation to take place, what would result? The principles of truth that God in His wisdom has given to the remnant church, would be discarded. Our religion would be changed. The fundamental principles that have sustained the work for the last fifty years would be accounted as error. A new organization would be established. Books of a new order would be written. A system of intellectual philosophy would be introduced. Here we see why the omega made Ellen White tremble because in the omega the tables would be turned and the majority of SDA in the new movement that would arise would hold the same belief and teaching that Kellogg attempted to bring into the church. They would even use the same false reasoning and would also use the exact same SOP statements taken out of there connection with her other writings to justify what they believe. If you are one who holds these ideas please do not rise up in prejudice and harden your heart but please with prayer and a humble teachable spirit bring your perplexities to the Lord and he will cast out error and give you his marvelous truth. Elder G. I. Butler responded to Kelloggs false teachings about the Holy Spirit in these words. So far as Sister White and you being in perfect agreement is concerned, I shall have to leave that entirely between you and Sister White. Sister White says there is not perfect agreement. You claim there is. I know some of her remarks seem to give you strong ground for you claiming that she does. I am honest and candid enough to say that, but I must give her the credit until she disowns it by saying there is a difference to, and I do not believe that you can fully tell just what she means. Then Butler adds, God dwells in us by His Holy Spirit as a Comforter, as a Reprover, especially the former. When we come to Him we partake of Him in that sense because the Spirit comes forth from Him. It comes forth from the Father and the Son. It is not a person walking around on foot or flying as a literal being in any such sense as Christ and the Father are. At least if it is, it is utterly beyond my comprehension of the meaning of language or words. G. I. Butler to J. H. Kellogg, April 5, 1904. The statement above from G.I. Butler shows what was being taught during the early church period about the Holy Spirit. The correct teaching on the Godhead was the foundation of the SDA church as stated by Ellen White and the pioneers. You, Elder Daniells, and others have spoken about a fine line of distinction, but I could not quite see what it was, but this statement by Sister White makes it clear to me. The difference is this: When we say God is in the tree, the word God is understood in that the Godhead is in the tree, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, whereas the proper understanding in order that wholesome conceptions should be preserved in our minds, is that God the Father sits upon his throne in heaven where God the Son is also; while Gods life, or Spirit or presence is the all-pervading power which is carrying out the will of God in all the universe. Letter: J H Kellogg to W. W. Prescott. Oct 25. 1903.

Please notice in the quote above Kellogg himself contrasts his false belief with the true one that he says he got from Ellen White herself. Kellogg was not ignorant of the true teaching but chose to follow his own ideas and ignored the counsel of the Lord through Ellen White. Will we make the same mistake or will we let the corrections from God do there work and reform our ideas. Any who do not heed the warning given in the alpha will fall for the omega according to Ellen White. SpTB02 - Testimonies for the Church Containing Letters to Physicians and Ministers Instruction to Seventh-day Adventists (1904) When medical missionaries make their practise and example harmonize with the name they bear, when they feel their need of uniting firmly with the ministers of the gospel, then there can be harmonious action. But we must firmly refuse to be drawn away from the platform of eternal truth, which since 1844 has stood the test. {SpTB02 50.1} I am instructed to speak plainly. "Meet it," is the word spoken to me. "Meet it firmly, and without delay." But it is not to be met by our taking our working forces from the field to investigate doctrines and points of difference. We have no such investigation to make. In the book "Living Temple" there is presented the alpha of deadly heresies. The omega will follow, and will be received by those who are not willing to heed the warning God has given.

You are not definitely clear on the personality of God, which is everything to us as a people. You have virtually destroyed the Lord God Himself. (Ellen G. White to John Harvey Kellogg, Letter 300, March 16th 1903) This last admission by Kellogg should cast out any doubt as to what the new teaching was that he brought into the church as in his own words he identifies it. This was an interview with Kellogg in 1907 when his name was removed from the SDA church books.

Now, I thought I had cut out entirely the theological side of questions of the trinity and all that sort of things. I didnt mean to put it in at all, and I took pains to state in the preface that I did not. I never dreamed of such a thing as any theological question being brought into it. I only wanted to show that the heart does not beat of its own motion but that it is the power of God that keeps it going Now, Sister White wrote an article and said, "It is wrong to say that God Himself is in the tree. Now, I didn't intend to say that. I didn't intend to say that -- that God Himself, the Almighty, separate and distinct from His power, from His Spirit as a separate entity -- that He was in the tree. I didn't mean to say that. I meant simply that the Spirit, the power, the intelligence of the Almighty, is being manifested in all these living things that are going on about us. (Interview, J. H. Kellogg, G. W. Amadon and A. C. Bourdeau October 7th 1907 held at Kelloggs residence) Kellogg departed from the faith by embracing the false teaching of the trinity doctrine that the mother of harlots and all of her Sunday keeping daughters embrace. The true SDA church does not worship the same God as the Anti-Christ power or her daughters no matter how much wine of Babylon is offered to her. Ellen White warned us what it would be like in the end and her predictions are coming to pass. Be not deceived; many will depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils. We have now before us the alpha of this danger. The omega will be of a most startling nature. {SpTB02 16.2} We need to study the words that Christ uttered in the prayer that He offered just before His trial and crucifixion. "These words spake Jesus, and lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify Thy Son, that Thy Son also may glorify Thee. As Thou hast given Him power over all flesh, that He should give eternal

life to as many as Thou hast given Him. And this is life eternal, that they might know Thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom Thou has sent. I have glorified Thee on the earth: I have finished the work which Thou gavest Me to do. And now, O Father, glorify Thou Me with Thine own self with the glory which I had with Thee before the world was. I have manifested Thy name unto the men which Thou gavest Me out of the world; Thine they were, and Thou gavest them Me; and they have kept Thy word." Satan will work his miracles to deceive; he will set up his power as supreme. The church may appear as about to fall, but it does not fall. It remains, while the sinners in Zion will be sifted out--the chaff separated from the precious wheat. This is a terrible ordeal, but nevertheless it must take place. None but those who have been overcoming by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony will be found with the loyal and true, without spot or stain of sin, without guile in their mouths. We must be divested of our self-righteousness and arrayed in the righteousness of Christ. {2SM 380.2}

"I am charged to tell our people, that do not realize, that the devil has device after device, and he carries them out in ways that they do not expect. Satan's agencies will invent ways to make sinners out of saints. I tell you now, that when I am laid to rest, great changes will take place. I do not know when I shall be taken; and I desire to warn all against the devices of the devil. I want the people to know that I warned them fully before my death." Manuscript 1, February 24, 1915

Publish the truth; do not publish error Do not try to explain in regard to the personality of God. You cannot give any further explanation than the Bible has given. Human theories regarding Him are good for nothing. Do not soil your minds by studying the misleading theories of the enemy. Labor to draw minds away from everything of this character. It will be better to keep these subjects out of our papers. Let the doctrines of present truth be put into our papers, but give no room to a repeating of erroneous theories.-- Letter 179, 1904. Every loyal child of God will seek to know the truth. John stated the truth so plainly that a child may understand it. "If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever; even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him." Do we choose to be numbered with those who cannot discern the truth, who are so blinded by the deceptive power of the enemy that they see not Him who is the express image of the Father's person? PH086 - Special Testimony to Battle Creek Church (1898) The reason why the churches are weak and sickly and ready to die, is that the enemy has brought influences of a discouraging nature to bear upon trembling souls. He has sought to shut Jesus from their view as the Comforter, as one who reproves, who warns, who admonishes them, saying, "This is the way, walk ye in it." Christ has all power in heaven and in earth, and he can strengthen the wavering, and set right the erring. He can inspire with confidence, with hope in God; and confidence in God always results in creating confidence in one another. (RH) August 26, 1890 The Righteousness of Christ. -By Mrs. E. G. White. The last statements from the pen of our pioneers shows what Ellen White was alluding to when she stated that Kelloggs new teaching destroys the personality of God. Many of our pioneers made statements that were in full harmony with this quote and any honest diligent student of Adventist history will have come across many of those statements. There has indeed been a change in the pillars of our faith, and even in the foundation of our faith that was given to us by God himself. This denomination was rasied up non-trinitarian and God used our pioneers to expose all the variations of the trinity doctrine as false. We now have the very trinity teaching among us doing its work of tearing down the pillars of our faith. Please study out this matter with a humble teachable spirit and ask God to show you if this is the truth. Andrews, John Nevins 5

The Three Angels of Revelation 14:6-12 Page 55 The doctrine of the Trinity which was established in the church by the council of Nice, a. d. 325. This doctrine destroys the personality of God, and his Son Jesus Christ our Lord. The infamous measures by which it was forced upon the church, which appear upon the pages of ecclesiastical history might well cause every believer in that doctrine to blush. Seventh-day Adventists claim to take the Word of God as supreme authority and to have come out of Babylon, to have renounced forever the vain traditions of Rome. If we should go back to the immortality of the soul, purgatory, eternal torment, and the Sunday Sabbath, would that be anything less than apostasy? If, however, we leap over all these minor secondary doctrines and accept and teach the very central root doctrine of Romanism, the Trinity, and teach that the Son of God did not die, even though our words seem to be spiritual, is this anything else or anything less than apostasy? And the very omega of apostasy? J. S. Washburn, 1939. May God bless you
