ppl.how do i transfer files from a desktop to a notebook(basically pc to pc)????what
cables do i need????is plug and play(xp) enough????any software needed????is rs232c
needed????heeeeeelp.(i dont wanna use any cd's floppies etc)

the normal lan cable, dunno what its called, can be used here. make the xp base the server
and the other one the client. and setup a home network here to transfer files. in xp no
drivers needed whatsoever.

if both machines have lan cards.. this is the best method as anil has mentioned. if i recall
correctly you will need sthg called a "crossed cable" .. ordinary lan cord with 2 wires
swapped or sthg ..
if not, there is another method.. use direct cable connection <google for this.. it is a s.w
u get with windows (98 atleast) . it lets u use the parallel ports.. u will again need a
parallel cable for this.
else, a more expensive option is to use a usb data cable.. if both have usb that is..

usbs ain't the besta options :mg: :mg: plain 'ol simple method is to use a traditional cross
cable as shrijit suggested.......just buy some cable and when gettin it crimped, as the shop
wallah to get do it in a cross fashion, coz u gonna do it only for two pcs......x'fer rates are
quite decent and in fact, if u have a decent enuf laptop, u cud start n/w gaming :mg: :mg:

hi .. have got a windows 2000 pc. its giving frequent problems with some exe's
(svchost.exe & netservices.exe and some more :( ) . also it hangs frequenlty and then
a hardware restart is the only option left. what could be the problem with these exe's and
wats the solution. i tried replacing these exe's from other windows 2000 systems but to no
use.
also, i am contemplatin on reformattin the system n installin stand alone linux. hows the
idea and does linux connect well with windows servers around. what about the windows
files tat i have. do these word, excel, jpg's etc open as well in linux.

hmmm how could you replce the exes?? i thought windows wont allow you to do so. you
could be attached by some virus. remember when are on win2k, winxp, these system
have wonder stuff called 'services' used for networking. these services are the favourites
of virus writers.
always install the latest patches/updated from microsoft.com webiste
about excel files opening in linux, there are spread sheet and offfice suites in *linx that
can open som m$ products, but you wonot get all the functioanlity.

what exactly are the problems these exe's give?
if this is a problem due to bad sectors etc..
if you wre replacing these exe's then hopefully u did this by
1. going to dos mode

2. renaming the old file <not deleting>
3. copying the new file
overwriting may not solve the issue, if the exe's r corrupted due to a flaky cluster area
where the file resides. renaming teh old and copying the new ensure tat a new location is
used, which hopefully isnt bad.
try running scandisk on the hdd.
else, try reinstalling windows.. dunno if that will help.
as for linux, it is a viable alternative for win.. provided. .
1. u r upto the task of installing configuring the h/w etc..
2. u can do without some compatiblty with the latest ms office fileformats.

3. u dont mind not playing some latest games .
why not havea adual boot system for sometime and experience first hand, then swithc
over?

an interesting thing i noticed abt the exe problems -- after i installed a firewall in my
comp, the exe's have stopped giving those problems (netservices n svchost et al, read
earlier posts) .... and the intrusion meter is showin attacks every second .. :(
dunno to wat extent the "attack" thing is true, but the problems r definitely less now :d

dual boot should never lead to "unstability" .. if it does, it will not be at the "after boot"
stage as it is in your case.
a well configured dual boot system is as good as 2 pcs.

have you used any other devices on the port? if they work, then obviously the port is
good. test the device on anohtr pc, then u can decide if the device is good or not.
in case u never have used any device on your pc.. and donnt know if usb works or not..
go to device manager and check if you have the usb controller, usb root hub(s) etc listed.
see that there is no exclamation mark etc next to it. if the usb devices are not listed, then
usb may be disabled in the bios. go to the appropriate section in bios (usually integrated
peripherals) and check.
another point... check teh installation procedure for the device. unless you install the
drivers from teh cd taht came with the device, the thing (usually) wont get detected.
and yes incase your problem is solved by the advice of any person on the forum, or even
by some 1 not on the forum, tell us here how it got solved (like rohit has) this will add to
our knowledge.

i have a problem ...can anyone help me with buying speaker system
i was planning to buy creative 5.1

but i learnt that they have a hardware specific requirement ...that i need to have an audio
card which has 6 channel
mine is creative audio blaster ..and i dont know how to check ...how many channels it has
<most probably it is 2>
so what shud i do ....

get the speakers and play them on this card
or go for the card and the speakers both
does ...altec lansing also have the same problem ...and which one is the best if i have the
budget of 5000 to 6000 ??

better pick up a 5/6 channel card if you get a 5.1. you will loose out on the latest games
else :mg: .. in songs you wont feel the difference, but the channels are split for surround
system in dolby movies and/or games.

member ...which come with an attachment...
that r nothing but beagle 32 virus etc......is something wrong with my mail id or theirs?

i think the virus accumulates the emails. so if anyone has been infected and has
yahoogroups email in his oe, then that will be sent to the yahoogroups. with 1000s of
them as memebers, chances of someone again getting infected is high, with the result that
the worm now has many many emails to trouble.

i've taken a cable internet connection and since then the problem started... :oops:
a worm named agobot.9.e entered my system and i tried to remove it using avg
antivirus... initially it was wiped out but it keeps on entering my system.... (dunno why it
loves my system..) my os is windows 2000 professional (nt based).. i reloaded the os but
the problem still persists.
can any one help me in this regard....
does the usage of a firewall reduce this problem? if yes which firewall to use....??

u can use sygate personal firewall pro

or zone alarm...

amd vs intel (for notebooks)
hi guys,
amd gives intel a tough fight in the desktop space, but what about laptops? amd chips
have been known to consume more power and heat up significantly more than intel chips,
2 factors which may not matter/can be controlled for a desktop but are crucial for a good
performing laptop. any personal experiences of using amd athlon xp-m here? or any other
amd powered laptop?

ooopps i'm so sorry...

but i'm using sygate firewall with absolutely no pains...
the only thing while using the sygate is first of all block all the processes and then it'll ask
for the processes that require to connect outside ur comp once u are connected...
then whatever u find is harmless allow that only...
and ofcourse no doubt other more secure and more better solution is go linux :)

the same thing i experienced ... all i can suggest is be careful as to what the attachment is
... most such mails r on the rounds thesedays and they r generally one worded
attachments in the subject line ... ive read yahoo has improved its mail system to stop this
, so time will tell :mg:

best wud be 2 use a direct cable connection (between the 2 serial ports). or alt u cud use a
network cable connection.
if u r using 2000 or me, for option 2, search the help for home networking. it will give u a
detailed list of things to be done. i have 2 comps at home, which i networked using this
method.
ofcourse, u wud req ntw cards on both the pcs.

usually comes up after i connect to internet.
mcafe was taken frm office lan but tis now 2 yrs old, can't be updated :(
norton came installed with the pc and started giving some problems soon.
trend micro was installed later on (pirated) n it started reporting fragment n other attacks
frequently. sometimes 6-7 attacks every minute. and then there is a feature where it
blocks all the internet traffic for a while. after some use, i found tat the lock cudnt be
unlocked again n i had to finally uninstall it to connect to internet :mg: (so much for
security !!)
am finally considering buying a legal s/w for security. have found many names of top
selling ones ... norton, mcafe, trend micro, panda etc. can someone guide me which one
will b the best. i am lookin for atleast an year's trouble free service

you prolly need a byte-tight firewall m8 ;) ...... get yourself zone-alarm

do....as for anti-virus...check out avg (http://www.grisoft.com/) ...it's updated pretty
regularly and is quite efficient too... :)

weird weird stuff happening. i have zone alarm installed. seems to work fine but heres the
problem ...
some time after booting ( varies .. half hour , 1 hour baad ) ... the ram clogs up. windows
takes minutes to close, the comp is virtually unusable... ram 100% used says task
manager ( on xp sp1 ). i have 512mb ddr so ram size cant be an issue.
why did i mention za ? thats the problem. the moment i shut za, things return to normal.
and the multiple attacks start, so shutting down za means, i cant be online.
i find vsmon.exe in ram (which is a za firewall file ) swelling in size as time goes, and
ram deteriorates.
solutions ?

finally some good news for yours truly. avg 7.0 works.
i've had a major headache battling viruses. used almost everything other than quickheal
:mg: - norton, mcafee, avast, avg 6, pc cillin, panda........
norton is a resource hog, mcafee never worked on my comp. i have a registered copy of
pc cillin but it was popping up alerts every alternate second, plus it aint compatible with
zone alarm.
so far, i was using trend micro's housecall online scan, which was satisfactory, but i still
had the nagging feeling that all wasn't clear.
hadn't dloaded avg 7 as i felt it would be as limp as 6, but tried it out today outta sheer
desperation. worked like a charm. found a few nasties that housecall hadn't picked up.
looks like some relief ahead.
avg isnt a resource hog, is completely free and now has the added bonus of being able to
catch viruses :mg:

being on a lan, ur lan's proxy's ip is banned.which means this ban may b in force due to
the actions of some1 else who also conencts thru ur proxy. to confirm try posting from
the pc of some1 else in ur bldg (on the same lan).
check if haloscan has a " i have been banned" complaint link. or wait it out.. the ban is
time-expiring i think . dunno how long.

proxies seem to be dynamically assigned. either that or the blacklist expired.

me got a problem:sad:
my comp gets stuck on startup at the windows is getting ready to start screen. i'm using
win xp. this problem just started yesterday, it stays ther for 5-10 min, then i get tired. i
reset the comp, after doing tht 2-3 times it moves on to the user login page. day before
yesterday i got some ram for my computer. i had 128 mb sdram n i added 256 mb sdram .
now i'v got both. could the problem be bcos of the ram?

1. try a self-check. try and boot your computer with 128mb and 256ram chips seperately.
if only one of the rams produce the error, than there is probably some defect with the ram.
u can even try using different slots..might help.
2. try cleaning up your comp from worms etc. do that in safe mode as well.
3. give more details about your configuration etc..would help in isolating the problem

comp is spending in each stage... this is if, improving ram doesn't help....

hi,
my system is beseiged by spyware,trojans.
downloaded the freeware malware scanner.
but the scanning process aborts automatically as soon as the malware is detected.
the system has slowed down considerably.
internet connection speed has plummeted to 31.2kbps.(dialup connection)

i have installed a game called "mortal kombat trilogy" in my computer. when i try to open
the game, i get a message "works best in 15-16 pixel depth, if u continue performance
will not be optimal"
the game starts off normally but after i try to choose a fighter i get the foll message:

click ok to terminate the applicaion"
then it closes. why does thi happen? it worked fine in my old win 95 comp(whose config
was very basic, 32 ram, vgs card etc).
my sytem config:
operating system: windows xphome

40 gb hdd
computer make: wipro (voyager)
memory: 128 mb ram
nvidia tnt 2
1.5ghz
screen resolution: 800 by 600
128 mb ram
the game worked fine in win 95 and 98..and compatabilty settings also did not work
out..any ideas?

help me out. my recycle bin is acting funny, rather it does not work at all. it's icon always
shows that it is full, while actually there is nothing inside. when i empty recycle bin it
asks - "do you want to delete the 3 items". even after selecting yes thousands time it still
stays the same.
also when i delete anything it gets deleted permanently instead of going in r.bin

i have installed a game called "mortal kombat trilogy" in my computer. when i try to open
the game, i get a message "works best in 15-16 pixel depth, if u continue performance
will not be optimal"

1. at 800x600 can u please check the color quality tag in the display properties>settings.
try reducing it to 16 bit (if u are using 24/32 bit)

regarding your iind problem, file getting deleted directly....

just right click recycle bin and check its properties, if percentage of hard available for
recylce bin is 0%, the file will be deleted obviously...??

i think u need to uninstall .... clean out the registry and any left over files and reinstall ...
if the error happens again , look out for this file riched20.dll and see that it is in the spss
folder and also in windows system folder ...

run the sfc from the start buton run> type in sfc,this will cheak your pc for corrupted files
and will ask you to restore them. when done and fixed anything that needed that, cheak
your system devices are there any yellow question marks? if so update any drivers as
required. or simply put your windows 98 cd in the rom and run setup from there, it won't
effect your current programs only windows 98 will restore and hopefully fix all those
missing dills. keep your windows 98 cd in the rom when doing the sfc, also any cd's that
may have drivers for your graphics card or network etc.
another thought> type in misconfig from your start run button,go to startup> untick what
you know windows doesnt need at the startup.reboot
as an add on, after you have correctly assessed that windows is working correctly, i
would suggest you remove all your internet connection sharing settings, and start from
the beginning for your internet connection sharing. here is a link that shows a step by step
guide on how to setup internet connection sharing for windows 98 2nd edition and any
questions you have.

since begining), every time i try to play a game even the basic ones one with minmal
graphics requirement like road rash or vcop , after some time the comp freezes and needs
to be restarted, the error message says"the problem is with driver of intel 82845g, it

you need to go to intel site and update the drivers for 82845g chipset ... also get latest

actually when i saw the words 'large stack of dvds' in ur post i cudn't resist my temptation
and also the fact that u too are from delhi made me give it a shot.
so dude are u plz plz interested in exchanging some dvds as i have got a good collection
of around 50 odd movies and most of them are not latest hits, like cuckoo's nest, the
sting, roman holiday and many more....
lemme know as i too wud be done wid my interviews by 17th march.
and mods, i am really sorry for this definitely inappropriate post in this thread, rather i
suggest we start a city specific threads for stuff like these as cat 2005(for guys like us) is
still some time away from now...

my pc is struck by a super wierd prob....my com port stopped working when i was trying
to attach my reliance phone....my pc is antiquated and the mouse can be connected to
thecom port(no ps-2 port)......i tried changinf the data cable but to no avail...so i got one
of those pci to serial convertors and now after installing the convertor,it still doesnt detect
the mouse....or if it does,a yellow exclamation mark appears in the system properties....
needless to say i'm using win98 as my operating system...plz help me out....life aint a bed

yep sir,my com port has been damaged....i dont have any other com port....and yes my
mouse works on other computers.......and the pc is not able to detect the mouse at the pci-

dood i'm sure tht i'm using the proper win 98drivers.......the worst part is tht the pci-serial
card is working.....i tried connecting the reliance phone to the card n its working....so da
prob is windows is not detecting the mouse....and the one time it accidently detected the
mouse,it could not find the proper driver for the mouse....so temme wht do i do...

u can do it two ways:
1. get a 10/100 lan card installed on ur pc and lappy :mg: transfer data as much as u wish.
2. since the above option could prove costly..get a usb pen-drive..and keep on transferring
till tomorrow evening :wink:
3. or....take ur hard-disk out..connect it to someone's cpu which has a cd-writer attached (i

yam sure nsit has plenty of cd writers)..buy cd's for 7 bucks from pallika..and then copy
to ur lappy..

wow! hollywood movie buffs!! well i have a good collection but only in my 80gb hdd,

you cud hook up both machines with a usb cable and set up a local connection between
the two or bridge them. it will be way faster and less messy than the hdd or floppy and
there will be no need to unhook the bb from the lan card!:mg:

welll i think this is the only thread where i can put up my query....
let me start with some background... in one of our management fest, we have mock stock
game.. till last year it had manual calculations. this year i automated it with vb 6, asp and
ms access. :gm: in this software, i used to display change of rates of stocks at an interval
of 10 secs. at that place we used hypothetical rates of stocks... which may be day or two
days old......
after that i thought of having online stock game(like we have on indiabulls.com) which
can run ove r a span of week or fortnight.... but for that i want to use live rates of bse and
nse... :wow:
and here i am in fix..... i don't know how to get live rates from bse and nse... :x
if anyone can help me outh then i'll be very thankful as i am trying over this since 6

broadband, i have hathway and the service is good. mtnl is available only in certain areas
plus it would be expensive as compared to cablenet (bcoz there is a download limit of
400 mb only), and additional downloads cost 1.2 per mb.

hi!
go to download.com and download some of the popular s/w that u do not have. regarding
broadband, i have hathway and the service is good. mtnl is available only in certain areas
plus it would be expensive as compared to cablenet (bcoz there is a download limit of
400 mb only), and additional downloads cost 1.2 per mb.
stick to sify, it is better.

if you do not download much stuff from the internet, then go for mtnl (if it is available in
your area). mtnl is surprisingly good when it comes to reliability. i am not too sure about
tata indicom, but i heard net connectivity is pretty good from indicom walky. you have to
decide what speeds u want, if 144 kbps is good enough then even a walky will be good.
you have to take a decision depending upon your usage, speed and download
requirements. you can also stick to sify and have a backup for critical conditions (like ur
good old dial up connection or a data cable in your gprs enabled mobile).
[ps: try airtel broadband also, i heard it is the best in town] :gm:

generally the cds marked 700mb dont contain more than 660 in it, tried moserbaer and
sony tho samsaung color series had it. what ya all say? any reliable ones? i hav to burn
divx and they generally score up to 700-720 mb, any sol?

u shoud be able to burn 80min cd's (ie 700 mb)
this is for nero burning rom software:

click file > preferences
then click the general tab.
the yellow marker section should say 74
change the red marker section to 80.
when dragging and dropping files, drop up till the red line.
lemme know if this helps.
beyond 700mb you'll have to use overburn, (a cd writer specific feature)...

not recomended though.

you can infact burn more than 700 mb!!!!! the cds can hold upto 10-15mb more than their
indicated capacity.
but you have to use the *overburn*ing feature on the burnin software like akash said.

you sure your hardware supports that??....if so, it usually is a bios issue...try flashing to
the latest version of your mobo's bios s/w...

what i wanted to point out was that cd's can be overburned to not just the standard 703

lemme clr this 2 gb doubt...there cannot be a 2 gb cd ...the stndd capacity is 700 mb

...xtendible upto 725 mb (in extreme cases of overburn)......
regding wat u got ..4 games...it must hav been a zip or a cab file or a ogg vrb...wherein
cmpression ration of upto 3:1 can be achivd (but mostly for txt data)...
so dont let ur imaginations roll wild...

i am a regular user of the 800mb discs. i find the amkettes the best. what's interesting is
that their capacity is recognised to be the standard 700mb by the burner and otherwise.
the only way to get them to fit in the 800mb is to overburn usin the disc at once feature.
quinte, the cd probably holds zipped files worth 2gb. it is physically impossible for the
damned thing to hold anything more than 725mb if its a sony and around 715mb if some
other make.

yea i can confirm tht 2 gb cannot be burned unless it is highly compressed maybe
greater 4x
some compression maybe achieved using tht cdimage which uses the following concept :
what it does is put each identical file only once into the image and create some sort of
link to the other occurences of that file.
e.g. you have the file x, which is in folder a, b and c. instead of writing it three times into
the image, it writes it only once, and makes links from folder a, b and c to direct to the
physical location of the file in the image.
i hve burnt 715mb max on a writex 700mb cd ....thts the limit maybe 725 as in case of
sony as someone said here.

i donno how many of you guys actually heard/use this s/w...its called uharc (donno if its
around still...an archiving utility for multimedia files....haven't used it in recent times...but
back when i used it, i remember it used to give me amazing compression rates!! this talk
of 2gb stuff made me sit up and scour for that piece of s/w on my drive :mg: :mg: if its
games that you are talking of, which have lots of avi/wav files in their library, then i blv
its pretty much possible using this s/w....
as for over-burning and the like.....hopelessly outta touch with the scene :mg: :mg:

i am off to a b-school in a months time....now this school has a wi-fi campus...
i have come to know from my seniors that the it people have put up a firewall....which
means i will not be able to access my mail a/c's like hotmail, yahoo, rediff and also will
not be able to use my messengers...
how do i bypass the firewall and access my mails and use the messengers ?
they will be providing me with an email id on the college's domain...i guess that is not a

hey people,
have a few questions for ya'll..
i am off to a b-school in a months time....now this school has a wi-fi campus...
i have come to know from my seniors that the it people have put up a firewall....which
means i will not be able to access my mail a/c's like hotmail, yahoo, rediff and also will
not be able to use my messengers...
how do i bypass the firewall and access my mails and use the messengers ?
to access gmail by configuring my outlook express ??
well everything depends of level of firewall and how it has been configured ... best would
be ask your seniors how they manage to access stuff if they can :mg:

good bet ...but i wonder, which school is it that blocks access to mails too !!! most do
block out ims, but mail servers too !! :shock: :shock:

the school blocks mail servers so that the students start using the email id's which are
provided by them for any correspondence...mainly 2 reasons....first, u cant create stupid
usernames....they wouldnt want some student from there college corresponding with a
company with an address like (dudewheresmygirl@yahoo.com...there are students who
do that)....second, everytime a mail is sent using @amity.edu it improves there visibility...

i don't think he wanted to know how to configure more than one accounts in outlook,
that's way too easy (i have four accounts configured on my outlook). if i got him right,
then he wanted to know whether his accounts will bypass the firewall if he configures
them in outlook.

hi guys..
one problem i am facing..

i have a cable internet connection.. package is based on data-transfer .. when i connect,
suddenly there is a constant upload .. and it goes upto about 1 mb per minute.. that really
takes up my mbs remaining..
i hope you are getting my problem.. with some troubleshooting, i found out that by
closing the svchost.exe process, the upload stopped..
now.. my question is .. does stopping that process gonna affect my routine usage of my
computer?

hehe...try finding out why that process is activated...usually is the result of some
adware....download ad-aware from here (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/)
and run it...it should clean up a bit...otherwise, you could try spybot s&d

svchost.exe is a process that handles services running from dlls.
so if you terminate svchost.exe, all those services will get affected.
do this: go to the command prompt and type
tasklist /svc
find svchost.exe, ignore the number that follows coz its just a process id. look at the next
column..it shows a list of services (i think these are the ones that may get affected..but i'm
not sure of this)
afaik, there shouldn't be any problem if you terminate svchost.exe
if your comp hangs, a simple restart should solve the problem ;-) ;-)

thanks a ton for responding..
well.. i do have ad-aware running on my pc.. and also have zone alarm.. still i dont know
why this is happening... as you might know we can control which applications/processes
interact with the internet through zone alarm... i tried stopping svchost.exe to send bytes
to the net... but after doing so, all upstream traffic stopped.. nothing could send any
request..
one more observation i would like to add to my query.. in the task manager, under the
process tab, there are many instances of svchost.exe running... but all of them are with the
username "system".. while there is one running with my login username...
i did "end task" that instance... and the unidentified upload stopped ... but am not sure
what made it come there at the first place.. i also found it in the startup processes in
msconfig... i also removed it... i hope its not going to affect much... do send in your
comments buddies..
i hope something else does not start uploading!!

your system seems to be infected with a high quality virus, i salute the creator of that
virus :mg:. i wish he had used his expertise in a constructive manner :).
get a good anti-virus s/w (norton/mcafee etc), i am sure it is a virus or a trojan.

lemme guess u are using some resource hungry os and noton products?
cant do much abt the os & norton rite:mg:, so u can just make sure u dont have many
things being invoked at atart up; the icons in sys tray can give u a hint.
goto c:\documents and settings\xxxxx\start menu\programs\startup
where xxxxxx is ur id and allusers and try to remove the unwanted shortcuts. u can use
regcleaner if u know abt registries else its risky smtimes. try to keep c drive free. waise it
all depends upon the s/w tht u hav installed.

nope... no point of that unless ur one of those chronic formatters types :mg:
though... it does help if you have a partation.
then you can format the windows drive w/o deleting your mp3's etc (which should be on
the other drive).
though it un-registers all ur progs.... very irritating loading everything again

hey neighbour :mg: , you can try these:
uninstall s/w that u no longer use.

install some good quality anti-spyware s/w (microsoft's / adware), remove all spyware
and adware programs
free some space on your main drive (where windows is installed)
remove unnecessary programs from the startup (by running msconfig)
if the problem still persists, format the damn thing :mg:
yes, it is absolutely practical! i used to format my comp. every month :mg: (ab thoda
sudhar gaya hoon, ab 2 months mein ek baar only :) )

d.m.try one thing, run the installer of proff on ur present home edition, if it allows ur job
is done. actually that is the way to keep ur installed prog data intact when ur os breaks
down.
try it, else what u can do is to take backup of ur program files folder & copy it cak in ur
new folder after new os installation, abt 60% of ur apps will work (non sys ones)

my pc is giving a problem
i have windows 98(in c drive) and windows xp (in e drive).
when i m working in windows xp, then my computer shuts down after some time and a
blue screen appears with some data etc, and it is written
beginning dump of physical memory......

i have tried removing all my games from the pc and also removing soma data from the e
drive but it is to no avail.
can some1 tell me what is the problem and what shud i do to rectify it?
i have gone thru the google search,as suggested by sm1 but i cud not find the exact
solution.

around the "activate windows" file. ur system might not even have a msconfig.exe file
because of it. so..missing file leads to error

corrupt hdd sectors do a wonderful job of shutting down windows when u boot. so..try n
defagment the drive. if it doesnt get defragmented..its prolly corrupted. say hi to a new
disc then :mg:

pls help if anybdy is using any bittorrent client using proxy connection. ive installed
bitcomet as the proxy im using needs authentication. but even after putting proxy_ip$port
with proxy authentication in connection preferences, im not able to download any of the
torrent file.
furthermore i hav tried with setting environmental variable in controlpanel ->system-
>advanced ->environmental variable ->system variables ->new (var name as http_proxy
and value as loginid$pwd@ipaddrss$portno). but seems it doesnt work !!! i access
internet frm office .. n behind the firewall :mad:

usual disclaimers follow.:mg: . the above statements are based on the author's personal
experience of messing around incorrigibly and repeatedly with the registry and system
files and services settings and then setting them right by 'upgrading' the os or sometimes
reinstalling it. i've learnt through trial and error. i hope you learn through trial coz the
error might be painful :) all 'da best.
p.s. there will be a request to format the system partition. be careful and look at the screen
during the installation and choose not to format the partition to avoid heartburn.

not exactly.....you cannot "upgrade" from pro to home or sp2 to sp1.....m$ treats pro as an
advanced version of xp home and consequently, that would be a downgrade which it
doesn't allow...similarly the case with service packs...sp2 wont allow you to install sp1
over it..... check this (http://www.petri.co.il/windows_xp_supported_upgrade_paths.htm)
page and this (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=292607) page out :)
(svchost.exe & netservices.exe and some more ) . also it hangs frequenlty and then a
hardware restart is the only option left. what could be the problem with these exe's and
use.
a possible solution to the issue could lie in re-installing win2k....remember, win2k has
been, by far, the best os ever to come out of ms's factories...okie...save msdos ;) .....it
rarely, if ever, has issues like file corruption, unless of course they are the result of h/w
issues or the result of botched up uninstallers....or better still, crappy p2p s/w :mg: and
no, copying files from other win2k systems wont help ya....the installation customizes
loadsa files as per the h/w and s/w on ur pc...
files tat i have. do these word, excel, jpg's etc open as well in linux
read up a lot before you actually do that....inspite of all that the mags or tux enthusiasts
may say, installing/configuring/running linux for a longtime-windows user isn't exactly a
stroll in the park :mg: n/w connectivity wise, it works gr8....of-course, that is only after
you've managed to get everything else right ;)
but yea, you could edit all your ms-office files using star office or other equivalent
packages.... :)

i have jst purchased a new comp.....p-4 3.0 ghz ht and intel original motherboard(915
chipset).the prob is it is heating as if i m keeping it in devil's fire.wen it starts even then
its temperature..i mean temp of processor is 55 c whihc then increses to 75 c at times....i
m afraid tht it might damage the mbd.i have also got an addnl fan installed but it's not
cooling the matters....while my other pc , a 1.5 gig one is kept in same room under almost
identical conditions but tis not heating up like tht.....
so ne idea why is my new pc such a hot quantity?

is ur proc a prescott , if it is then they have high temps - 50 to 70's...
also check if the heatsink n fan on the proc is tightly secured , if it is loose then that may
be the reason for high temps

in addition to checking the heat sink, make sure that a generous quantity of cooling gel is
applied on top of the processor.
also, if your system isn't getting hung (as usually happens with overheated (sometimes
due to overclocking) processors), i think all's well and there isn't much to worry about.
maybe your software is giving inaccurate results. :)

if u havnt got any prog running in the backgrnd chek the memory led...if it flashes while

i hv a p3 650mhz , 256mb ram , 10gb hdd(partitioned as c: 2.5 , d:2.5 , e:5 gb)

i install all my applications like msoffice,vb,c,java,yahhoo etc in the d or e drive as my os
is in c drive. as i install 3-4 of these big size applitns i keep getting the msg: u r running
out of disk space in c drive due to wich i face a lot of problems. i hv tried using the-
uninstall windows components- but this doesnt work out. so plz suggest if nething cud be
done.
and i m about to take a dataone broadband connection(256kbps) wich gives me 1gb

upload limit/mnth for free , i wanted to know how the connecton is and if 1gb is
sufficient enough. apart from download does opening a site takes any upload , if yes then
whether 1gb wud be enough for 1 mnth as the rates after that r like 2 rs./mb.(i surf net for
around 1-2 hrs/day)

d/ls and when u watch movies online that you really start using up b/w....and yea, for
downloading a site, a few kb invariably have to be uploaded...the remote comp should
know where it has to send its data ;)

the probable reason he's getting this message time and again is that his c: is already
overflowing....and whenever a new software is being installed, the system files being
copied/created in c: and the registry changes (not sure about this) are leading to this
message of "insufficient space".
one way to prevent this is to change the threshold when this message is displayed. by
default, if less than 10% of the partition capacity is free, this message is displayed. reduce
this percentage to avoid this message

yes, i understand 256kbps = 32kbps (kilo bytes per second)....and afaik, we can't get this
over copper. at least that's what my teacher at college told me...and i have enough reason
to trust him :mg:

done. well there isnt a solution to this my dear, u have to give space to it :mg: as vineet
said, u can have window$ give msg at further shortage. whatever u install, some files
need to be stored in ur c: drive, in ur local settings folder or windows or system folder, so
if u install apps u can save a bit of space.
try doing this- delete all files in c:\windows\temp folder (dos based) or c:\documents and
settings\<username>\local settings\temp (nt based)
this may give u a lot of recovered space.
but bhai, it seems u are using window$ xp, so the sys will feel strangulated:mg::mg:

adsl, frequency splitting et al ;) anyways...i get a healthy 30kbytes/sec almost thro' out the
day..ofcourse, we cant do anything if the server at the other end sucks !! but, if i were to
avg it out, the minimum d/l rate that i get is 27 !! and donno why, mebbe some testing is
going on, but for the past few days, for a coupla hrs in the morning, i get a rocking
180kilobytes/sec (a 110mb file in under 10mins ;) ) :gm: :gm: :gm:

ok my big post abt windows xp tweaking ..didnt find any other in search...here it is.
1) hibernating windows
there are two ways to hibernate windows. one-->open task manager and then click
shutdown tab and click hibernate. second hidden method id to simply click turn off from
start menu and press shift when the small box appears. notice standby changes to
hibernate.
2)speed up your performance in windows xp
some people find windows xp slow and some find it good. but the simple way to boost up
your xp is simply right click»»my computer»»click properties»»advanced»»settings in
perfomance»»adjust for best performance.
wait and watch. if you common tasks have gone (the boxes in each folder then go again
there and check »» use common tasks in folder.
3) speeden up your booting
just edit boot.ini and remove the /fastdetect word. another way id press win+r. type
msconfig click startup tab. end the processes you do not want. also do the same with
services tab. if bits is started please turn it off.
4)no messenger
tired of msn messenger, even after disabling it, but do not want to remove it. simply go to
c:program files and rename messenger folder to died messenger. and if you use outlook
express, it(messenger) will not start untill yo invoke it to stat.
5)do not highlight newly installed programs
tired of that annoying little window that pops up to tell you that new software is installed?
if it gets in the way when you’re logging off, turn it off completely. to do this:
click start, right-click at the top of the start menu where your name is displayed, and then
click properties.
in the taskbar and start menu properties dialog box, on the start menu tab, click
customize.
click the advanced tab, and then clear the highlight newly installed programs check box.
click ok, and then click ok again.
6)turn off automatic updating.
some people might have thought that after using pirated xp copy and connecting to the
internet their copy becomes some slower. so just turn off live update.
how to turn off automatic updates?
click start , click control panel , and then double-click system.
click the automatic updates tab, and then click turn off automatic updating. i want to
update my computer manually.
7)using the ultimate configuration tool (professional edition only)
one of the most full featured windows xp configuration tools available is hidden right
there in your system, but most people don't even know it exists. it's called the local group
policy editor, or gpedit for short. it just like old poledit.exe.
to start this editor:
select start and then run, then type the following:
gpedit.msc
after you hit enter, you'll be greeted by gpedit, which lets you modify almost every
feature in windows xp without having to go to regedit.
8)login in adminsitrator
today, i found a new security hole in windows xp which is very important to all
the admins of winxp.its very easy to bypass the windows xp admin logon window. when
u started yr computer , u got a message something like that:
admin or (whatever u make a account!!!)
password: ..... xxx xxxx.........
some people think that its impossible to break through this, but through this article u can
make it easy to break this cripy.
in order to break the windows xp admin logon , you simply boot yr computer through
windows 2000 cd and boot up a windows xp box and start windows 2000 recivery
console, its a troubleshooting program.
windows xp then allows us to operate victim's computer as an administrator without a
admin password, even if the administrator account has a strong password. you can also
operate other user accounts that may be present on, even if those
accounts have passwords. finally u can do anything u want on the victim's computer,
copy/delete the files whatever u want .

9)remove program from your desktop
whenever you have to remove any software/package/program you have to go to control

panel then add/remove programe and for that either go to my computer or start menu. my
way is the sleekest one. all you have to do is make a new shortcut on ur desktop and set
its target to "control.exe appwiz.cpl" there id space between control.exe and appwiz.cpl
and write without quotes. this simply would launch addremove programs wizard.
10)shutdown button on desktop
right click on ur desktop and create new shortcut and type

“c:windowssystem32shutdown.exe –s” without quotes in the popup box which will
appear asking for a path of shortcut . now when u will double click this shortcut it will
give u shutdown message and ur computer will shutdown after some seconds. u can
customize ur shutdown button with same icon which original shutdown have just go to
the properties of ur shortcut and click change icon tab select any icon u like and click
apply.
similarly u can also put restart button on ur desktop just replace –s in above line by –r
if u don’t want shutdown button on ur desktop u can the go to start >run and type
shutdown –s or –r they will do the same job. if someone tries to shutdown u remotely on
the net then u can stop shutdown process but typing shutdown –a in run.
shutdown –s = shutdown & restart
shutdown –r = restart
shutdown –a = to abort shutdown
11)remove hibernation file
if you do not use hibernation, make sure you do not have it enabled, which reserves disk
space equal to your ram. if you have a hidden file on the root directory of your c-drive
called hiberfil.sys, hibernation is enabled. to remove that file:
go to control panel, select performance and maintenance, power options, hibernate tab,
and uncheck the enable hibernation box.
12)free some disk space with xp and some fast.
if you have ntfs partistions then you should stop the indexing service. this service slows
your navigation of files. whenever you click the file the xp adds that to its database for
quick search. to turn it off select your all hard disks. then right click and go to properties.
and uncheck "allow indexing service check box".
13)turn off and on system restore.
the system restore option is useful for some people but for most people its a sheer
wastage of ram and hdd. so according to me it should be turned off. to change system
restore settings press win key + pause/break key (near num lock). go to system restore.
and change your settings.
14)prevent xp from unauthorised access
this is the best way to prevent un authorised access while connected to the internet. go to
my computer properties, and select remote tab. uncheck both the check boxes. this help
you to prevent your computer from unauthorized access, while connected to the net.
15)change drive letters in windows xp
when you add drives to your computer, such as an extra hard drive, a cd drive, or a
storage device that corresponds to a drive, windows automatically assigns letters to the
drives. however, this assignment might not suit your system; for example, you might
have mapped a network drive to the same letter that windows assigns to a new drive.
when you want to change drive letters, follow these steps:
right-click my computer, and then click manage.
under computer management, click disk management. in the right pane, you’ll see your
drives listed. cd-rom drives are listed at the bottom of the pane.
right-click the drive or device you want to change, and then click change drive letter and
paths.
click change, click assign the following drive letter, click the drive letter you want to
assign, and then click ok.
16)run safely any of downloaded exe's.
when ever you download or copy any exe, do not execute it straight first scan it, and then
right click that exe and select run as and then select the current user option alongwith,
protection option. this is usefull in some cases.
17)change the default opening folder in windows explorer
by default, windows explorer opens showing the my documents folder. to change the
default setting so that all top–level drives and folders are shown, follow these steps:
click start > programs > accessories, then right–click windows explorer, and click
properties.
under target field, which reads %systemroot%explorer.exe, add to make the line read:
%systemroot%explorer.exe /n, /e, /select, c:

18) identify a 16-bit program
use windows explorer to open the folder that contains the program's executable (.exe)
file. right-click the .exe file, and then click properties. a 16-bit program does not have a

displayed in the notification area, and then click pause. when you are ready for windows
to start downloading again, click the automatic updating icon, and then click resume.
restore an update that you previously declined. if you decide not to download a specific
update, you can prompt windows update to offer that update again.

22)editing explorer in windows xp
editing explore in windows xp is very easy with available tools its not as difficult like old
dos based tedious method here u need just one tool called resource hacker. it is a resource
viewer it will show u resources in any 32bit windows 95/98/me/nt/2000 executable files
(including exe’s, dll’s, ocx’s and cpl’s) . ok go in to ur windows directory and find
explorer.exe and make its two copies name them
as explorer_1 and explorer_2 .exe respectively and keep them in windows folder only. we
will edit explorer_1 and will keep explorer_2 as backup copy if anything goes wrong.
open explorer_1.exe in resource hacker and go to string table and edit whatever u want to
even u can change start button by ur name or anything else. after editing even a single
word do not forget to click the compile button. change icon or u can change animated
message such as when u install a new programs so when u go to all programs a animated
message comes “new program installed” u can change it by ur sentence etc. now we have
edited the explore_1 now go to file menu in resource hacker and save it as explorer_1.exe
it will ask u that explorer_1.exe is already present do u want to replace it, click yes. now
we have our edited explorer. now restart ur computer in safe mode with command prompt
by pressing f8 during booting process . now we will copy explorer_1.exe on explorer.exe
by typing command copy c:windowsexplorer_1.exe c:windowsexplorer.exe. now restart
ur computer and what u will seeing that u r working with ur edited explorer. if anything
goes wrong than just copy explorer_2.exe on explorer.exe by same process. {extracts by
mr.xp}

change the title bar to read windows media player provided by , so if i had entered text
‘abhishek bhuyan’ , it would read: windows media player provided by abhishek bhuyan

when you click on the start menu there is some delay to display the contents , just for no
reason. effects are pretty though. the default speed can be adjusted with a quick registry

a new, small, neat feature for windows xp deals with renaming files. i personally have
always wanted the os to include a way to do a mass file renaming on a bunch of files. you
can now rename multiple files at once .its really simple:
select several files in explorer, press f2 and rename one of those files to something else.
all the selected files get renamed to the new file name (plus a number added to the end).

29)disable baloon tips.
to disable ballon tips in windows xp do this registry tweak

30)sort menus alphabetically
when you install a new program for a user, it doesn’t find its place in the alphabetical
start menu hierarchy right away; it hangs out at the bottom for a little while. if your users
employ the classic start menu, they can re-alphabetize it manually by right-clicking the
taskbar and choosing properties, clicking the customize button next to the classic start
menu, and clicking the sort button. with the windows xp style of start menu, however,
you don’t have an equivalent button. to make windows always alphabetize the list,
remove the permissions from the registry key that controls the sort order for the start
menu. to do so, go to:

thanx all u guys for ur suggestions (urmad,vineet, maverick) , but still the problem is the
same :huh: and it seems that the only panacea to my prob. is a new hdd so looking
forward to get a new one (80gb). shud i go for seagate or samsung ?:???: and plz give
some gyan on how to achieve the maximum usage of it since a lot of it gets dissipated
while partitioning it. want to make 4 partitions 15,15,20,30 gb's.
btw urmad, is there any chance that i can get a dataone connection with unlimited d/ld in
the same scheme,u being very lucky though!!! but i dont watch movies on net its just

use partition magic software(http://www.powerquest.com/partitionmagic/) to do this.
make atleast 10 gb partition to be on the safe side.
then just boot from the linux cd , follow instructions and install the linux.
if u r planning for a dual boot i.e both windows and linux ...then i wud suggest use some
os management software. partition magic itself got an os management software or u can
go for a separate one like partition commander (http://www.v-com.com/)

as posted before, the original version of acrobat comes with a pdf filter, which converts

i use ghostscript in association with ghostview..you can get them here

(http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/) ....gs is a set of drivers while gview offers a win32 gui
thats pretty easy to understand....once u install both..all you would need to do is set up a
postscript printer on your pc(go to add new printers---add any color ps printer from
there)...then open the ps file using ghostview and you can then convert it into a
pdf....gives you excellent displays even with rare fonts.. :mg:
or if you prefer a much direct option, use easypdf (http://www.visagesoft.com/easypdf/)

and download the free version....acrobat 7 would be overkill if all you wanted was to
convert a few documents to pdf... :)

hello guys.......
back with a problem.....i need to change my hdd as i have only 10gb space right now.i
went to get a 80gb hdd but was told tht it is not compatible with my system.so i m left
with 40gb option but the difference in cost is minimal.
my pc's configuration is as follows:
intel p3 processor
651 mhz
256mb ram
os-windows xp professional-2002 with service pack 1
at one shop i was suggested tht bios cud be changed to make it compatible i mean
updated,how a bios gets updated ?.tell wat shud i go for ? and wether the bios change is a
risk or i shud go for 40gb.furthermore one thing is kept to be in mind tht there shudnt be
any problem if i get my bios changed to make it (80gb) compatible with my system
guys plzz help me out

i recently got a bafo bf-120 irda port. i downloaded the drivers for xp from the site.
however, everytime i try to install the device , the wizard always halts at:
"cannot install this device. windows cannot find the software for this hardware."
apparenly, there are 3 diff variations to this device:

infineon, 6101e,6102f
i have tried installing all 3 types of drivers, to no avail.
someone plz help!!!!!

i recently got my comp upgraded. it went from:

intel celeron 600mhz, 128mb sd ram, 15 gb hdd to:
amd sempron 2400+ (1.67ghz) processor, 512 mb ddr ram, 15 gb + 80gb hdd.
i would suggest you go for a similar upgrade. amd won't pinch your pocket as much as an
intel.
bios - if you have a totally reliable chap, then go for it, o/w an upgrade ain't that bad an
option.

i was thinking of purchasing a data cable so that i can transfer some photos from my
mobile to my laptop. i was enquiring at several stores wonder why each authorised nokia
dealer quotes a diff price doe the same cable..ranging from 600-1600.
wonder why thats the case. any suggestions as to how i can recognize the originals from
the duplicates?? they both look alike to me.
(my phone doesn't have a blue tooth hence this option)
plz suggest.

infra red is nice but its in samsung only i think dont know abt latest models of nokia and
btw u can get a duplicate data cable its cheap and serves ur purpose too

all latest models have infrared..........nokia, samsung and others....i bought nokia one 6
months back and it has infrared.

both of these are good and user friendly
