Read this passage and then answer the questions that follow.
1 Grace Sulu’s typical day begins and ends with her two children, 5-year-old
Alexis and 4 year-old Terence. She, however, spends almost the entire day with
Alexis. “Alexis needs extra-special care and attention,” says Grace. Since she was
8 months old, Alexis is a child with special needs - paediatricians call it delayed
developmental condition. “While other toddlers were beginning to run at 1½ years, 5
Alexis was only learning to sit,” says Grace.
2 A special child needs to be embraced, loved and cherished just as much
as any other child. Yet there are differences: because he or she is special, your
child requires special care, more attention and understanding. “My husband and I
never thought there was anything wrong with Alexis,” Grace says. “We realized 10
she was not quite alright when, at 8 months, she could barely flip over.” Hence,
began the therapy sessions and homecare programmes for Alexis. Understanding
your special child’s condition is key towards providing the appropriate parenting,
care and professional therapy for his or her development. Early medical
intervention and therapy can provide your child with a happy and independent 15
future.
3 Mentally and physically challenged people require a continuum of care
over time linking families, schools, hospitals and outpatient facilities. Types of
treatments include both individual and group psychological support such as
psychotherapy or counseling. “A therapy programme is developed based on the 20
mental and physical ability of the child to maximize his functions,” says Arthy
Annamalai, senior therapists at the Therapy and Educational Assistance for
Children in Mainstream Education (TEACH ME), Asian Women’s Welfare
Association in Singapore. “The programme is tailored to help the child with his or
her cognitive and social skills.” 25
4 Two of the many medical challenges affecting children today are deficit
hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and cerebral palsy (CP). ADHD is often treated with
a range of psychostimulants. A major disadvantage of these medications is that
they require several doses a day. Sometimes, these are administered with
behaviaoral therapy, where the child is taught learning, sporting and socializing 30
skills. Children with CP benefit from early treatment; the effects of the condition
are greatly reduced with ongoing therapy. According to the National Dissimination
Centre for Children with Disabilities (NICHCY), children younger than 3 years can
benefit greatly from early intervention services, a system of services to support
infants and toddlers with disabilities and their families. For older children, special 35
education and related services can help each child achieve and learn.
5 Children with CP usually require different types of therapy. These may
include physical therapy, which helps the child develop stronger muscles to help
him walk, sit and keep his balance. Occupational therapy helps the child develop
fine motor skills such as dressing, feeding, writing and other daily tasks of living. 40
Speech-language pathology helps the child develop his or her communication
skills. The child may work particularly on speaking, which may be difficult due to
problems with the muscle tone of the tongue and throat.
6 Programmes that enhance the quality of the parent-child relationship can
substantially improve the emotional, social, cognitive and physical developments 45

of special children. Such activities are particularly meaningful for mothers living in
conditions of stress and social adversity. “It is important for parents to know how
important sensory processing is and to understand how therapy can assist with
their children’s development,” says Kim Nicolson, paediatric occupational therapist
at the Kaleidoscope Therapy Centre. “How parents communicate with their child 50
plays a role in how responsive the child becomes. Using touch, movement,
affection, gestures and vocal tones can help a child who struggles to engage in
interaction develop emotionally and socially?”
7 Medications are just one form of treatment. Today, there is a broad range
of therapies available to help parents and their special child have a better quality 55
of life. Nicolson explains that many of these special children require different
therapies and individual education programmes to help them reach their
potentials. “Early intervention is extremely important. Parents should seek
professional advise as soon as they observe any delays in their child’s
development.” However, therapy can be expensive and parents may need to 60
prioritise which therapy will be most beneficial at a particular stage of the child’s
8 development.
Parents should be actively involved in their child’s therapy programme,
learning hands-on on how to build their child’s skills at home. Says Nicolson,
“Children whose parents are actively involved in carrying out home programmes
usually make significantly faster progress.”
