India, the worlds second most populous nation is located in South Asia on the Indian subcontinent.

Indian culture is of great antiquity. The earliest Indian civilization grew up in the Indus Valley from 4000-2500 BC. Today, India ranks among the top ten industrial nations in the world.

Asia is the worlds largest continent, stretching from Europe in the west to Japan in the east. It has a total area of 44,680,718 sq km. Asia has huge climate extremes, from a cold polar climate in the north to a hot tropical one in the south. Verkhoyansk in Siberia has had temperatures as high as 37C and as low as 68C. The Himalayas are the highest mountains in the world, with 14 peaks over 8000 m high. To the north are vast deserts, broad grasslands and huge coniferous forests. To the south are fertile plains and valleys and tropical jungles. Baikal is the deepest lake 1743m and it holds 20 percent of the worlds fresh water. Lake Baikal in Siberia, Russia, is about 25 million years old. It contains about one-fifth of all the worlds fresh water. The water is carried there by 336 rivers that flow into it. Lake Baikal has the worlds only freshwater seals, and among its many unique animals is a fish that bears live young. Asia is a vast continent of wide plains and dark forests in the north, separated from the tropical south by the Himalayas. Northern Asia sits on one giant tectonic plate. India is on a separate plate that crashed into the north Asia years ago. It is piling up the Himalayas as it ploughs on nor Asias longest river is Chinas Yangtze, 5520 km long.
