Race of Slaves in Louisiana

Descriptive Discussion: This graph shows the race of slaves in primarily Louisiana during 1719 to 1820. Some of the different races that are included in this graph is Indian, black, and mulatto. Some of the slaves were mixed with white and Indian as well as black and Indian. Looking at the graph you can see 9.6% was missing, .8% of the slaves were grif, .2% were Indian, 85% were black, 8% were mulatto, .3% were quadroon, and less than 0% were octoroon, metis (white & Indian) or of another race. Interpretive Discussion: After looking at the graph I can conclude that a majority of the slaves race were black. This is mainly because most slaves were captured from Africa. Slaves of any other race or that may have been mixed is due to the fact that some of the slave owners might have mated with the slaves. Races such as octoroon and metis were races that were nearly unheard.

Slave Database 3 Age Categories of Slaves in Louisiana

Descriptive Discussion: This graph shows the age categories of slaves primarily in Louisiana during 1719 to 1820. Less than 0% of recorded slaves were unborn, .3% of them were nursing, .4% of them were infants, and 3.1% of them were children. Also, .3% of the recorded slaves were young which probably meant they were teenagers, 10.8% of them were fully grown adults, and .3% of them were old. The missing percent was 7.2% and 77.7% were recorded under the age category 0.

Interpretive Discussion: After looking at the graph of age categories I can conclude that majority of the slaves were categorized under the group 0. Since this particular group was not identified I can also conclude that the ages of these slaves were unknown. The reason that theses slave ages may have been unknown is because that most slave owners probably didnt keep up with the ages of their slaves.

Gender of Slaves in Louisiana

Descriptive Discussion: This graph shows the gender of slaves in Louisiana during 1719 to 1820. According to the graph 50.8% of the slaves recorded were males. Female slaves that were recorded in the database made up 39.2% of the slave population. The other 10% was missing which could include either males or females.

Interpretive Discussion: After looking at the graph of the gender of slaves in Louisiana you can conclude that males made up majority of the slave population. The reason for this is because male slaves were more wanted than female slaves since they were strong. Male slave were stronger and healthy so this meant they could do more labor work than female slaves which made them more valuable. All females were primarily used for was to help in the homes of the slave owners in addition to reproduction purposes.

Slave Database 5

Runaway Slaves in Louisiana

Descriptive Discussion: This graph shows runaway slaves in Louisiana during 1719 to 1820. They are categorized as missing, slaves that have run away, consorted with runaways, and have complained about runaways. 94.9% of the slaves were grouped missing from the plantations they were placed at, whereas 5.1% actually ran away. None of the slaves helped other slaves runaway neither did they complain, talk about running away, nor attempt to do so.

Interpretive Discussion: After looking at this graph I can conclude that no slave agreed with their status if they attempted any of these things. The slaves that were grouped as missing perhaps disappeared and they didnt know exactly what happened to them. It is very shocking to me that only 5.1% of the slaves attempted to runaway. Even more shocking that no one helped others run away or even fix their mouths to complain or talk about running away.

Summary and Conclusion

Slavery is one of the most insightful topics of African American History. For centuries, slavery was once accepted amongst numerous of Americans. These many Americans consisted of those from the South whereas most Northerners opposed it. The issue still leaves a bruise on the heart of many Americans mainly african americans due to the division between the North and the South which ended badly. Instead of being treated like one and the same as every other american, slaves were treated and regarded to as property. Although some slave owners showed pity for their slaves, most slave owners treated their slaves ruthless and never thought of them as being anything more than property. As a result, many slave owners did not care to keep up with any background information on their slaves.

After analyzing several different variables from the 1719-1820 Louisiana Slave Database, it can be concluded that with most of the variables there was a large amount of missing data. For instance, when the age categories of the slaves were recorded majority of the slaves were unidentified. This is probably because most slave owners didnt keep up with this type of information on their slaves or didnt care to keep up with their ages. Another example would be the recorded slaves that ran away. For this variable, the majority of the data was missing. This is probably because slave owners didnt know exactly what happen to most of their slaves once they saw that they were missing. From this data as you can see it can be concluded that many slave owners did not care too much about the backgrounds of their slaves. The things that mattered the most to the slave owners were that the slaves did everything that was expected of them and that they did it right. Nothing less or they would have to deal with insensitive and brutal consequences.
